This gorgeously illustrated picture book is dedicated to the wild
horses of the Nemaiah Valley, one of the last pristine places
left for wild horses of the rugged north mountain country. Awardwinning
author and illustrator Georgia Graham went there to look
for the horses in the middle of May when they were still low in
the hills searching for the first blades of spring grass. There she
found four bands, each led by a stallion, rippling with muscles and
jealously protecting his mares. There were very few foals because
their predators are many.
Where Wild Horses Run tells a moving story of how one
band of horses grouped together as a family to protect a
vulnerable colt from cougars – a story of love and dedication that
will ultimately inspire children with the hope that there are still
truly wild places in this world worth our protection.
Georgia Graham has been a compulsive drawer ever since she
was a child and her mother gave her a set of twelve pastels.
She is the author of A Team Like No Other and the illustrator of The
Saturday Appaloosa and Tiger’s New Cowboy Boots. She visits 50 to
60 schools each year presenting her books, demonstrating drawing
The Sweat Lodge teachings of the Anishinaabe are an
important influence on the daily lives of the people. Full of
symbolism, interconnected one with another, they are not as
uncomplicated as they might seem.
The Little Boy’s Vision Quest is one of those teachings and
it reveals how the Sweat Lodge was brought to the people.
Anishinaabe author James Whetung has crafted a crisp, clear
telling while retaining the cadence of its oral beginnings. Paintings
by Paul Morin evoke the crackle of fire, the scent of cedar,
the mysterious dark side of the moon.
Paul Morin, an accomplished painter, sculptor and musician
is also the illustrator of a number of children’s books. Paul
Morin now lives near Rockwood, Ontario.
The Rainbow Crow
By David Bouchard and David Jean
Before two leggeds walked on Mother Earth there was a great
cold. The animals formed a council; someone had to seek
help from the Creator. Rainbow Crow, a most colourful bird, was
selected because he had a beautiful voice that would surely impress
the Creator. He flew into the heavens and won fire from above.
But on the way back the fire began to burn his plumage black and
destroy his beautiful voice. But Rainbow Crow persevered, bringing
the life-saving fire safely back to his friends. This Lenape legend of
courage and sacrifice is masterfully retold by award-winning author
David Bouchard. The stunning art, painted on traditional drums by
celebrated Canadian artist, David Jean, will inspire young and old
alike.
Order of Canada recipient and multi-award-winning Métis bestselling
author David Bouchard teams up on this occasion
with Cherokee master artist David Jean and the world renowned
drummers and singers Manatial in this beautiful rendition of
Rainbow Crow. Accompanied by a CD, Rainbow Crow will capture
the hearts of readers of all ages.
David Jean was born in Toronto to immigrant parents. His
father was Mainland Chinese; his mother was from Barbados,
a mix of Cherokee, African, and Dutch descent. His paintings
and lithographs are widely acclaimed and complement numerous
notable collections worldwide, including those of Giorgio Gucci
Saving Armpit
By Natalie Hyde
When vandals deface the Harmony Point sign, the town does
indeed seem to become the “arm Pit” of the region. The
baseball team hasn’t won a game in two seasons and the town itself
is falling into disrepair. But when the new postmaster becomes the
ball coach, Clay and the rest of the Terriers finally seem to stand a
chance of winning a game. Until they overhear a bureaucrat from
the city say that the post office will close unless the “numbers”
work out. The team begins “Operation Tennis Elbow” – a letter
writing campaign designed to generate enough mail to keep the
post office – and its postmaster – in town (and coaching their baseball
team). And along the way, they learn the power of the pen in
effecting positive changes in their community.
Natalie Hyde is the author of more than a dozen works of nonfiction.
She has contributed titles to a variety of educational
Born Ugly
By Beth Goobie
To say Shir is unpopular is a understatement. In fact she’s less
than homely, therefore a target of casual cruelty in high school.
Even though she wishes to remain invisible, bullies find ways of
tormenting her, viciously. Worse still, she’s an outcast in her own
family.
There are two areas where Shir can overcome her negative self
image. One is at her part-time job where the kindly Mr. A has
hired her as the driver of his grocery delivery truck. The other is at
her secret retreat - myplace - where she can sip her beer and watch
the river, undisturbed.
But neither sanctuary is safe; Shir discovers that Mr. A’s kindness
is part of a plot to use her as an accomplice in shady dealings,
and her haven by the river is intruded upon by a boy who simply
won’t go away. While these invasions shatter her initially, both lead
to her throwing off the mantle of victim and asserting herself for
the first time in her life.
Beth Goobie graduated from the University of Winnipeg and
the Mennonite Brethren Bible College. She is an award-winning
The Land Is Our Storybook is a first-ever series of books for
children about the diverse lands and cultures of Canada’s
Northwest Territories. Mindy Willett, an educational consultant
and former teacher from Yellowknife, has worked with storytellers-
Elders and cultural leaders-from ten regions in the territory to
capture real stories of everyday life as it exists today. Told in a
uniquely diverse range of northern voices, with a child-centred
approach, books in The Land Is Our Storybook series highlight each
official Aboriginal language group in the NWT, revealing a richly
textured picture of life in the North-on the trapline, around the
campfire, in communities, at school, and within the outdoor school
that is the land itself. The series celebrates the seasons, ages,
genders, traditional activities, and communities of the NWT. The
stories are illustrated by the striking images of acclaimed northern
photographer, Tessa Macintosh and depict the similarities in lifestyle
between children of the North and South, as well as the marked
cultural differences, and highlight the special relationship these First
Nations people have with the land and how they are adapting to
rapid change while remaining connected to the land. Images of the
landscape and animals within it, of trapping, hunting, fishing, and
bannock baking sit alongside pictures of children at school, swimming
at recreation centres, and reading in libraries. Here is modern
northern culture painted beautifully: a complex mix of the new and
Aunt Rose has other ideas: the Metropolitan Opera, the Botanical
Gardens, the Museums of Modern Art and Natural History. Melvin’s
parents warned him to “be a good guest” while he was visiting. But
when Aunt Rose takes him out for dinner to a fancy restaurant,
Melvin puts his foot down. Together, he and Aunt Rose work out a
compromise so that they can share the best parts of the city.
Frieda Wishinsky is the award-winning author of Give Maggie a
Chance, and Maggie Can’t Wait, along with many other books for
young readers. Frieda lives in Toronto.
Linda Hendry has illustrated dozens of picture books for children
including the acclaimed Jocelyn and the Ballerina, How to Make
Super Pop-Ups and The Queen Who Stole the Sky. Linda lives in Rockwood,
Ontario.
“The fewer words one has to work with the more difficult it
is to write a good story with an interesting plot, recognizable
and sympathetic characters, and a strong sense of place. Frieda
Wishinsky has accomplished all this with No Frogs For Dinner. This
entertaining and fun story, well told without a whiff of condescension,
will entice children to turn the pages. Readers will identify with
long-suffering Melvin and recognize his dilemma when dealing with
his Aunt Rose. Playful illustrations by Linda Hendry add a splash of
color and reflect the humor in Wishinsky’s text. Early readers don’t
get much better than this. Highly recommended.”
Sheila Says We’re Weird
By Ruth Ann Smalley, Illustrated by Jennifer Emery
Sheila is either hanging over the back fence or hanging out with
her neighbors. They’re interesting, but they’re weird. Why do
they hang their laundry outside instead of using the dryer Why
are they riding their bikes to the library instead of just using the
car Why do they mow their lawn with a push mower when a gas
mower is much faster But Sheila discovers that their homemade
soup sure tastes good, that she likes picking cherry tomatoes and
strawberries in their garden, and it’s pretty cozy to sit around the
woodstove in the winter. Are Sheila’s neighbors really weird, or do
they have some good ideas going on
Ruth Ann Smalley is a holistic educator, who writes about
green living, fair trade, and health for children and adults.
A former literature professor, she currently homeschools with
her two children in Albany, New York. They live in a kid-friendly
neighborhood, where children run in and out of each other’s houses
and even the dogs have playgroups. Neighbors gather for porch
parties, ice cream socials, plant swaps, book club meetings, musical
jam sessions, and winter board game nights. One family even hosts
an annual August “Kid Wash,” where children in swimsuits soap up
and enjoy being sprayed by adults with garden hoses!
Jennifer Emery has been illustrating for children for over a decade.
Her work includes numerous children’s books, including Christmas
Gifts, Animal Alphabed, and Moving Day. She also illustrates regularly
for the children’s magazine Highlights for Children. Jen grew up in
Minneapolis, Minnesota, where she still lives in a tiny apartment with
her border collie, Butler. The two explore her urban neighborhood
four to five times daily, witnessing many of the earth-friendly living
ideas practiced by Sheila’s neighbors in this book.
Mysterious and evocative, the full moon is the most celebrated
phase of the earth’s only natural satellite. Around the world,
people and other living things interact with and are affected by the
full moon in fascinating ways. Sailors set out to sea on the high tides
the full moon causes. Insects and migrating birds are guided by its
brilliant light. Families dance, sing, and feast at full moon festivals,
while traders buy and sell camels. Corals reproduce, wolves howl,
and children dream of being astronauts.
In this poetic exploration of full moon science, celebrations, beliefs
and illusions, Marilyn Singer and Julia Cairns take us on a whirlwind
international tour. Along the way we visit Canada, Israel, Morocco,
India, China, Australia, and more as we learn about the many ways
people welcome and honour Earth’s wondrous full moon.
The Mangrove Tree
Planting Trees to Save Families
By Susan L Roth and Cindy Trumbore, Illustrated by Susan L Roth
picture book based on the work of Dr. Gordon Sato, a Japanese
A American cell biologist who made saltwater and desert land
productive through the planting of mangrove trees in Eritrea, a poor
African country bordering the Red Sea.
For a long time, the people of Hargigo, a village in the tiny
African country of Eritrea, were living without enough food for
themselves and their animals. The families were hungry, and their
goats and sheep were hungry too. Then along came a scientist, Dr.
Gordon Sato, who helped change their lives for the better. And it all
started with some special trees.
With alternating verse and prose passages, The Mangrove
Tree invites readers to discover how Dr. Sato’s mangrove
tree-planting project transformed an impoverished village into a
self-sufficient community. This fascinating story of environmental
innovation is a celebration of creativity, hard work, and ability of one
man to make a positive difference in the lives of many.
Susan L. Roth’s unique mixed-media collage illustrations have
Nobody can say he is settled anywhere forever;
it is only the mountains which do not move from their places.
So goes a Maasai proverb, and so goes the lives of the Maasai in
Africa. For hundreds of years they have moved with their herds
of cattle and goats across thousands of miles in Kenya and northern
Tanzania.
Today the Maasai face new challenges, moving them in different
directions. Their traditional way of life is threatened, lands are
overgrazed, and wildlife is on the brink of extinction. The Maasai are
meeting these obstacles head on – adapting their lives and farming
practices, while keeping their vibrant close-knit culture alive.
Award-winning author-photographer Jan Reynolds presents a
striking glimpse of a dynamic people. Only the Mountains Do Not
Under the Mesquite
By Guadalupe Garcia McCall
Lupita, a budding actor and poet in a close-knit Mexican
American immigrant family, comes of age as she struggles with
adult responsibilities during her mother’s battle with cancer in this
young adult novel in verse.
possibility of losing her mother, the anchor of her close-knit
family. Suddenly, being a high school student, starring in a play, and
dealing with friends who don’t always understand, become less
important than doing whatever she can to save Mami’s life.
While her father cares for Mami at an out-of-town clinic,
Lupita takes charge of her seven younger siblings. As Lupita
struggles to keep the family afloat, she takes refuge in the shade of
Polar Bears
No animal is more symbolic of the Arctic than the polar bear.
In the short space of 150,000 years, it has evolved from a
grizzly bear into the most specialized predator of the arctic ice sea.
Through behavioral, morphological, and physiological changes in a
remarkably short period of time, the polar bear has become totally
adapted to living comfortably in one of the harshest environments
on the planet. Yet, the very survival of the unique mammal is now
threatened by global climate warming.
Dr. Ian Stirling, the best known polar bear scientist in the world,
compresses the major new discoveries of the last 40 years
of research on this iconic mammal into a new, easily readable and
scientifically comprehensive book about the ecology and natural
history of polar bears. In accessible language, he explains how polar
bears evolved, how they were researched, aspects of their behavior
and how they prey and live on marine mammals for their survival,
how seals and polar bears have evolved in response to each other,
and how the threat of global warning is jeopardizing the survival
of this magnificent hunter. In a separate chapter, he explains why
the polar bears of Hudson Bay have become so important to our
understanding of the species and how Churchill became “The Polar
Bear Capital of the World.”
Despite the concerns about climate warming, there is hope.
Ecotourism in several areas is helping to develop a world-wide
constituency of people who care about polar bears in the Arctic.
The influence of this constituency is vitally important because there
is still time for the world to reduce the rate of climate warming, but
only if we make significant reductions to the output of greenhouse
gases soon. Maps, tables and graphs throughout the book illustrate
the distribution of polar bears, where they originated, the status
of populations, critical differences in ice conditions and how they
impact the survival of different populations of bears. The details
of their ecology, behavior, hunting and habitat, described in detail
are illustrated with the most diverse and extensive collections of
photographs of polar bears ever assembled in a single book. Some
of the photographers included are: Stefan Lundberg, Norbert Rosing,
Mats Forsberg, Sue Flood, Doug Allen, and Jenny Ross.
Fitzhenry & Whiteside
As a research scientist with the Canadian Wildlife Service and an
Adjunct Professor at the University of Alberta, Dr. Ian Stirling
has studied the behavior, population, ecology, and predator-prey
relationships of polar bears for 40 years, longer than anyone else
in the world. His research on polar bears in western Hudson Bay
provided the first clear demonstration of how climate change was
having clear, negative consequences on resident polar bears there.
He is a member of national and international committees on polar
bears and marine mammals and has authored or co-authored over
200 scientific articles and three books, including Polar Bears, which,
until this new book, was the definitive work on the natural history
and biology of this amazing animal. For his work, he has won several
awards, including the Northern Science Award and has been made
What is the attraction of ponds Why do so many homeowners
choose a site with a pond on the property, or build their
own water vista
Ponds, when properly managed, enhance a property. Ponds
provide an environment for fish, recreational entertainment
through swimming or boating, a satisfying wildlife habitat, and higher
real estate value to any rural property.
Ponds are hard work. They do not flourish on their own. The
wise property-owner manages his or her pond for maximum
enjoyment and pleasure.
John Stephen Hicks has spent much of his private and professional
life around lake or pond environments, and this book is
a comprehensive summary of his years of experience in pond and
landscape management.
Written for the serious layperson, The Pond Manual explores
the wide variety of pond ecosystems available, and their
function; topographic and soil requirements, design and construction
techniques, wildlife management, fish species and their cultivation,
local bylaws affecting pond maintenance, algae and plant control,
parasite problems, chemical and physical parameters of water
sources, and water control / erosion devices.
Fitzhenry & Whiteside
Well illustrated in colour with photographs, line drawings,
charts, maps, diagrams, The Pond Manual is fascinating to
read, and an indispensable resource for anyone who has a pond,
is dreaming of building a pond, or knows someone with a pond
needing attention.
John Stephen Hicks is a senior landscape architect with over
30 years’ experience in the landscape planning and design
of Ontario Parks with extensive work in Algonquin Provincial
Park. He spends much of his spare time as a volunteer in
the Ontario Land Stewardship Program aiding rural landowners
in pond management and design through his council’s seminars and
public outreach programs. He is the second generation manager of
the Hicks’ family pond, in addition to being the author of many
articles on pond management, wetlands habitat, and books on
astronomy. John Hicks lives, with his wife, in Keswick, Ontario
See this World Before the Next pays homage to the romantic era of
cruising to the world’s exotic destinations - in the first class style
of the Canadian Pacific Railway. Though the Canadian Pacific Railway
was a national enterprise in name, its founders were free-traders in
practice and global thinkers by nature. The first cruise ships offered
unheard of luxury and an opportunity to travel to major ports and
distant corners of the world. Contained in the book are glimpses
of foreign countries and amazing sights, vintage brochures and
posters, detailed two-way correspondence, timetables, engineering
plans and photographs, news clips, sailing schedules, passenger
bulletins and promotional materials, and cruise-ship ephemera and
travellers’ diaries carefully culled from CPR and other archives
by a patient and talented historian/archivist. The author’s threedecade
interest in CPR cruise ship material and a predilection for
scouring flea markets and old collections of ephemera have brought
fascinating and exotic material to light.
The Canadian Pacific Railway forms the backbone of Canada, but
few people are aware that, as well as trains, the CPR has a
history in steamship service, international trade, hotel building, and
many other unusual projects and promotions.
David Jones has drawn on his years with the CPR archives in
compiling this lively collection of stories and anecdotes about
a unique institution. He has contributed many historical writings to
company publications and is co-author of Canadian Pacific Posters:
1883–1963. He lives in Calgary with his wife and daughter and
continues to delve into the CPR’s colourful past.

Autobiography
The Story of My Experiments with Truth
By Mohandas K. Gandhi, Foreword by M. G. Vassanji
Mohandas K Gandhi is one of the most inspiring figures of
our time. In his classic autobiography he recounts the story
of his life and how he developed his concept of active nonviolent
resistance, which propelled the Indian struggle for independence
and countless other nonviolent struggles of the twentieth century.
Gandhi was 56 when the book appeared and he lived what he
preached for another 23 years, through triumph and tragedy.
After retiring from HBC to Yellowknife, Seagrave decided to
Buffy Sainte-Marie is a symbol of the free expression movement
of the 1960s and her powerful songs inspired countless people
to country and western and rock and roll musician, to social activist,
mother, script-writer, actress, digital artist, philanthropist, chil
throughout her incredibly diverse and engaging, though private, life,
Buffy Sainte-Marie has cultivated her unique vision for achieving
In this ambitious biography of an international cultural icon, Blair
Stonechild seeks to bring together the many facets of a remarkable
The Diary of Mrs. John Graves Simcoe
By Elizabeth Simcoe
wealthy aristocrat and accomplished society hostess, Elizabeth
A Simcoe, became the First Lady of Upper Canada when her
husband was appointed lieutenant-governor of the newly created
province. Following an audience with King George III, the couple
set sail for Canada in 1791. Among their belongings were ball
gowns, jewelry, fine china, and canvas tents bought from the estate
of Captain James Cook.
Lady Simcoe’s diary of the proceeding four years records many of
the key events in the earliest days of present-day Ontario. She
was present at the meeting of the first legislature in Kingston, the
first elections, and the convening of the first parliament in Newark
She supported her husband, a British commander in the
under her husband’s tenure that a judiciary was created, many of
Numerically the largest group of Native North Americans,
the Ojibway were the first to have a history written by one
of their own people. Published in 1850, its author, George Copway,
or Kah-ge-ga-gah-bowh, had already achieved a certain amount
of fame delivering passionate lectures in North America and
Europe. Attired in traditional Ojibway dress, Copway held
up the virtues of tribal life while promoting mid-nineteenth
century ideas on education. Arguing for a separate Native North
American state, Copway garnered considerable support from both
Natives and non-Natives.
The Traditional History and Characteristic Sketches of the Ojibway
Nation, Copway’s finest book, is in many ways a summation of
his lectures. Written primarily for a non-Native audience, Copway
viewed the book as an attempt to “awaken a deeper feeling” toward
the people of the First Nations. Much more than a history, the work
is an exploration of Ojibway culture through which Copway had
sought to induce the British and American governments to greater
efforts in improving their relationships with Native North Americans.
Father of Standard Time, founder of the Royal Canadian
Institute, designer of the country’s first postage stamp, author,
artist and town planner, Sir Sanford Fleming can rightly be called
a Renaissance man. As Engineer-in-Chief of the proposed transcontinental
railway, he was determined to cross the country in
order to find the best route.
Fleming chose the minister of his church, Rev. George M
Grant, to serve as his secretary and provide a record of
the expedition’s progress. Like Fleming, Grant was one of the
“muscular Christians” of the Victorian age. The two shared a love
of the outdoors, a belief in the importance of physical fitness and,
perhaps most important of all, the concept of progress. During
the summer and early autumn of 1872, their party travelled by
train, then steamer, canoe, wagon and horseback, making their way
from Halifax to Victoria. A bestseller in 1873, Ocean to Ocean
is a carefully crafted, detailed account of the trek. Grant looks at
the newly created Dominion and the promise of the railway with
a sense of wonder coupled with great inthusiasm.

In 1831, English novelist Susanna Moodie wrote friends that she
would “never marry a soldier nor leave my country for ever.”
The following year, as the wife of a half-pay officer, she set sail from
Scotland for her new home in Upper Canada. The couple was
convinced that a life of farming in the New World would provide
the income to live a comfortable life and maintain their social status.
Seven years later, with two failed farms behind them, the Moodie’s
left the bush for good.
Roughing It In the Bush is Moodie’s account of her first seven years
in Canada. Written with a novelist’s eye, the book has often been
The Backwoods of Canada
Catharine Parr Traill immigrated to Upper Canada in 1832, newly
married, the wife of a British army officer. Her life in pastoral
rural England as an author of children’s books had left her entirely
unprepared for the years of struggle she and her husband would
experience in trying to establish a homestead in the wilderness.
Originally published in 1836, The Backwoods of Canada is an
account of the couple’s first three years in Canada. Beginning
with an ocean voyage from Scotland, the landing in Montreal and
the long trek through Lower and Upper Canada to her new home,
Traill observes a lifestyle and landscape that has passed into history.
Although Traill had intented that her experiences and advice
serve as a guide for the prospective English emigrant, The Backwoods
of Canada, has risen above similar works of its day to become
an integral part of the Canadian canon. Indded, Traill’s descriptions
of early pioneer life have found a place in the works of Robertson
Davies, Margaret Atwood, and others.
The extermination of the Beothuck represents one of the
most tragic and shameful episodes in Canadian history.
Numbering less than a thousand at the point of the first
European settlements, these inhabitants of Newfoundland initially
avoided contact. However, by the 18th century encroaching
settlers brought with them violence and death.
Shanawdithit, also known as Nancy April, the last of the
Beothucks, was found starving in 1823. She spent her last days
at the Beothuck Institution in St John’s, during which time she
recorded much of what is known about the language and customs
of her people. Her passing, due to tuberculosis, on June 6, 1829,
marked the death of an entire people. The culmination of forty
years work, The Beothucks or Red Indians was the first book
written about these lost people. The author, James Howley, presents
a virtual compendium of all that had been recorded. He adds to
this his own research, which included interviews with individuals who
had actually come in contact with these native people. Ilustrated
with dozens of paintings, maps, photographs and prints.

Seppuku
A History of Samurai Suicide
By Andrew Rankin
The book charts the history of ritual samurai suicide from
ancient times until the 20th century through a selection of
thrilling samurai tales, both literary and historical. It provides a lot
of information that has not appeared in English before. The author
has worked directly from original sources, such as medieval war
tales, documents of the samurai clans, and execution handbooks.
The book is divided into four main parts:
• History to 1600 looks at cases of ritual suicide taken from literary
and historical texts from the eighth to the seventeenth century
• The Seppuku Ritual draws on never-before-translated seppuku
manuals from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to explain
the correct procedure and etiquette for seppuku, and the
different types of stomach-cutting procedures, types of swords, attire,
location, even what types of refreshment should be served at
the seppuku ceremony
• History after 1600 focuses on legendary cases of seppuku up to
the twentieth century, with the emphasis on historical rather than
literary cases
• Paradigms gathers together a selection of short quotations from
authors and commentators down the centuries that sum up both
the Japanese attitude to seppuku and foreigners’ reactions:
“As for when to die, make sure you are one step ahead of everyone
else. Never pull back from the brink. But be aware that there are
times when you should die, and times when you should not. Die at
the right moment, and you will be a hero. Die at the wrong moment,
and you will die like a dog.”
—Izawa Nagahide, The Warrior’s Code, 1725
Andrew Rankin is a Japan scholar studying for his PhD on Yukio
Mishima at Cambridge University, UK. He was the translator
of Snakelust by Kenji Nakagami, published by KI in 1998. Rankin has
lived in Japan for twenty years, where he studied at Tokyo University
Masaharu Aoyagi is a driver for a delivery company in the city of
Sendai in northern Japan. Two years ago he had achieved brief
notoriety for rescuing a local starlet from a robbery attempt while
making a delivery to her apartment. Now he is back in the spotlight—this
time as the main suspect in the assassination of a newly
elected, young, and charismatic prime minister who had returned to
Sendai for a victory parade in his hometown.
Told in six parts from several perspectives, Remote Control
follows Aoyagi on a forty-eight-hour chase through streets,
buildings, and sewers as he—by various ingenious means, and with a
little help from his friends—eludes not only the authorities but also
“security pods” set up throughout the city to monitor telephone,
cell phone, and e-mail transmissions, and keep a continual photo
record of street traffic. Very quickly it becomes clear that Aoyagi
has been framed by a shadowy organization, and the whole scenario
plays out like the JFK assassination, with Aoyagi in Oswald’s shoes,
trying discover who has set him up and why—before it is too late.
The action culminates in the center of City Park, as Aoyagi plans
to surrender to the authorities with the media watching to avoid
the conspirators from having him killed before he can prove his
innocence.
With nostalgic references to the Beatles and allusions to the
JFK assassination, and with its likeable characters and unforgettable
dialogue, this award-winning bestseller is sure to strike a
chord with entertainment-fiction readers everywhere.
Kotaro Isaka debuted as a writer with Audubon’s Prayer, which
won a literary award for new mystery writers. He has twice
been nominated for the Naoki prize, Japan’s most prestigious prize
for popular fiction. He has written 17 novels and short story collections,
7 of which (including Remote Control) have been turned
Yakuza Moon
The True Story of a Gangster’s Daughter (The Manga Edition)
By Shoko Tendo, Adapted by Sean Michael Wilson, Illustrated by Michiru Morikawa
The story of a yakuza’s daughter is tellingly recreated in a mature
manga format, illustrated by a female Japanese manga artist in
a lively and inspired fashion. A poignant and eye-opening true-life
memoir, Yakuza Moon is a shocking yet intensely moving first-person
account of one woman’s experience of growing up in Japan’s yakuza
society.
Born into the family of a wealthy yakuza boss, Shoko Tendo lives
her early years in luxury. But labeled “the yakuza kid,” she is the
victim of bullying and discrimination from teachers and classmates
at school, and of her father’s drunken rages at home. The family
falls into debt, and Tendo falls in with the wrong crowd. By the age
of fifteen she is a gang member, by the age of eighteen a drug addict,
and her twenties are marked by a series of abusive and violent
relationships with men.
Tendo sinks lower and lower. After the death of her parents and
her own attempt at suicide, she begins a tortuous, soul-searching
reevaluation of the road she has taken. An unconventional act
of empowerment helps her finally take control of her life, leading to
redemption and a new chance.
Shoko Tendo’s original heartbreaking prose memoir has struck
chords around the world and has been translated into 14
languages. She has appeared in a handful of documentaries, at least
one about her life, and several others featuring her life-affirming
tattoo. The latter documentaries include History Channel’s Marked
and a French documentary La voie de l’encre (The Way of Ink), 2010.
The Vegetable Sushi Cookbook is the brainchild of Izumi Shoji, a
hugely popular blogger in Japan, who shares her expertise in
taking a wide variety of vegetables and turning them into delicious
and healthy sushi meals. Each recipe has been chosen for its healthy
ingredients and delightful taste, and is easy to make with basic cooking
skills and no special tools. (Alternatives are included for any
ingredients that might be difficult to find in some areas.)
The author covers the entire range of sushi dishes, from nigirizushi
(the popular fish-atop-rice style) to maki-zushi (rolled
sushi), and chirashi-zushi (scattered sushi), including the oshi-zushi
style popular in the Osaka area. Also explained, in detail with many
photographs, are the various styles of preparing the vegetables for
use in sushi dishes, from grilling to steaming and frying. Each dish is
photographed in full color.
There are additional chapters on making sushi bento, the popular
lunch boxes that are changing many people’s lunch habits, and
how to prepare sushi for party events, enjoyable for both kids and
adults.
Vegetable Sushi is a unique and flavorful way to enjoy a healthy
lifestyle.
Izumi Shoji is a Tokyo resident and mother, who took her interest
in vegetarian cooking and began a blog—Vege Dining: Yasai no gohan
(vegetable dinners)—in February, 2007. The blog, with its daily recipes,
quickly made an impact on the blogosphere (and now averages
60,000 unique users daily). Her first book, Yasai no Gohan, featuring
recipes from her blog, was released in March, 2008, and sold over
70,000 copies. She has appeared in numerous magazines, and has
regular columns in Lee and others. The Vegetable Sushi Cookbook is
Shoji’s fifteenth book and her first in English.
Top sushi master Kikuo Shimizu, now 71 years old, reveals the
secrets of Edomae sushi, the traditional sushi of Tokyo and
shows how real sushi in Tokyo is made by a true artist.
domae” means “in front of Edo,” the old name of Japan’s capi-
city. In 19th-century Edo, as busy and bustling as today’s
“Etal
Tokyo, workers needed quick meals, and sushi, made from vinegarseasoned
fish and rice, was nutritious and invigorating. Edomae
sushi grew in esteem as a unique cuisine, using freshly-caught fish
from Tokyo Bay. Today, there is little in writing about true Edomae
sushi, but its technique and soul have been passed down from chef
to chef, maintaining its tradition while evolving through the decades.
Now, sushi master chef Kikuo Shimizu shows how authentic
sushi is made. Shimizu uses certain kinds of fish traditional
in Edomae sushi, and reveals techniques for handling fish including
many tips useful in America. He also explains how to make sushi
rice.
This book includes dozens of types of sushi, with large pictures
and instructive text on each page, explaining the ingredients
and techniques of Edomae sushi. The essential accompaniments of
sushi fish—wasabi, nori, and rice—are explained in detail, including
how and when they are grown and harvested and how to best
prepare them across the four seasons.
Kikuo Shimizu stepped into the life of making sushi at 16 years
old, and has been making traditional-style sushi for 56 years.
After a brief apprenticeship, he began working in the fashionable
Ginza district of Tokyo under his mentor, Shigezo Fujimoto, the legendary
“sushi emperor”. There Kikuo realized the soul, beauty and
technique of authentic Edomae Tokyo-style sushi. Once he had developed
his knowledge and technique in Edomae sushi, he became
a chef at a sushi restaurant in Tokyo’s Nakano ward, then opened
his own restaurant in Akasaka in 1971. Kikuo is famous for shunning
media attention; until this book, the only way to experience his
sushi was to try to get a reservation at his 9-seat counter.
Japanese For All Occasions
Mastering Speech Styles from Casual to Honorific
By Taeko Kamiya
In Japanese, register—the way you change your words according to
who you are speaking with—plays a key role. The rules of register
in Japanese are far more complicated than they are in English, but
until now there hasn’t been a book that lays it all out in an accessible
format. Japanese for All Occasions is a much-needed introduction
to this bewildering aspect of the language. Through 57 dialogues,
veteran teacher Taeko Kamiya shows learners how the Japanese
change their way of speaking depending on the social setting or
their relationship with the listener, with examples ranging from
casual to superpolite. Chapters are ordered according to function
(“Introducing People,” “Identifying Things,” etc.) so that learners can
absorb the most common sentence patterns used in daily life at the
same time that they study casual, polite, and honorific styles. Each
one presents three similar dialogues that show contrasting styles
of speech. Detailed notes explain the grammar or usage at work in
the dialogues, and quizzes at the end of each chapter allow learners
to test their understanding. Best of all, the book comes with a free
CD containing all the dialogues, narrated by professional Japanese
actors. For intermediate students and above.
T
aeko Kamiya (1925–2005) was an internationally known author,
teacher, and philanthropist who received her BA from Doshisha
Women’s College (Kyoto) and MAs from the University of San
Francisco in education and from Monterey Institute of International
Contemporary kimono style as captured by leading
Japanese kimono magazine, Nanao
Many Western readers see the Japanese kimono as a “special”
kind of clothing that is worn on formal occasions or by geisha.
Existing books on kimono, such as The Book of Kimono concentrate
on the history of the kimono, weaving and dyeing, and how to put
on the various parts of a kimono. Recently in Japan, attitudes towards
wearing kimono are changing. No longer seen just as clothing
for special occasions, there has been an increase in the numbers of
young women wearing kimono as everyday clothing. Taking advantage
of this trend, in 2004 a new type of kimono magazine called
Nanao was started by the Japanese publishing company Presidentsha.
The magazine is aimed at young women who regard kimonos
as part of their everyday wardrobe. It features interviews with real
young women who wear kimonos regularly, fashion spreads, tips
on how to wear, how to coordinate and accessorize, how to get
dressed, how to find great vintage kimonos, etc.
The secret of Nanao’s success is that it treats kimono as something
“real”—as everyday wear rather than something special.
As well as photographic spreads of the type that appear in any kind
of fashion magazine, the magazine is full of practical tips such as how
to wear, where to buy, how to care for your kimono: the kind of tips
that used to be passed on from mother to daughter.
The New Kimono gathers together a selection of the best articles
from Nanao. The book will appeal to those with an interest in
kimono—particularly the increasing number of young Western
women who have developed an enthusiasm for kimono through
their exposure to Japanese pop culture and “cosplay”, as evidenced
by Internet forums such as “Immortal Geisha”: http://www.immortalgeisha.com/ig_bb/
The book will also appeal to anyone with a
general interest in fashion or Japanese culture. On a visual level, this
book is also sure to serve as inspiration to anyone with an interest
in textiles and design.
Nanao Magazine is a quarterly publication, established in 2004,
with a circulation of 50,000. In addition to the four yearly issues,
there are two special extra issues a year. The editor-in-chief is
Yasuko Suzuki.
All the Emperor’s Men
Kurosawa’s Pearl Harbor
By Hiroshi Tasogawa
Revealed for the first time – the true story behind Akira Kurosawa’s
thwarted attempt to direct the Japanese sequences of the classic Pearl
Harbor movie, Tora, Tora, Tora!
In April 1967, with much fanfare, 20th Century Fox and Kurosawa
Productions announced that the legendary Akira Kurosawa would
be the director and script editor for the Japanese sequences of Tora,
Tora, Tora!, a movie about Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor. In December
1968, three weeks into filming, Kurosawa was dismissed. What
is the truth behind this humiliating dismissal – and what would Kurosawa’s
version of the film have been These are the questions
that journalist Hiroshi Tasogawa addresses in All the Emperor’s Men.
The director began preparing for the movie with a strong sense
of mission. It is probably fair to say that Kurosawa’s first and
foremost purpose in associating himself with the project was to
clear Japan’s name over its attack on Pearl Harbor. He intended
to make a historical case for Japan’s defense. His vision, however,
was not what 20th Century Fox had in mind. They wanted a war
spectacle, while Kurosawa saw an epic tragedy of human failings
and miscommunication that would transcend national borders and
cultural differences.
In order to solve the puzzle of what went wrong, the author went
looking for documents and records, which he found in archives
and libraries in California. From them, he concluded that the incident
was not the result of a conspiracy or malice on the part of
Hollywood, as has been suggested. In fact, Kurosawa himself was, in
no small part, responsible for his own fate, misunderstanding both
the studio’s concept for the movie and his own role in the production.
Hiroshi Tasogawa was a reporter for NHK, Japan’s public broadcasting
corporation. He was also an Associated Press reporter
and a professor at Tokai University. He is now an author and journalist.
He was granted four major awards for his book, Akira Kurosawa
vs. Hollywood (Bungeishunju Ltd.): the Osaragi Jiro Award, the
Kodansha Nonfiction Award, the Oya Soichi Nonfiction Award, and
the Geijutsu Sensho Award. His other books include A Newscaster
A gorgeously-illustrated volume showcasing the glory of one of Japan’s
most beloved sites
Mt. Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan. Because of its solemn
and majestic view, this mountain has been adored as a religious
object and loved by people in Japan from ancient days. Even though
it is hard to climb to the top, it is possible to ascend to the middle
by car, so an increasing number of overseas visitors are making the
climb.
What is attractive about Mt. Fuji is its expressive look that
changes from day tonight and season by season, and never
shows the same again.
This book introduces 40 images of the mountain taken by
professional photographers who have been capturing Mt. Fuji
on film for many years. Additionally, the volume offers images of Mt.
Fuji in art and craft, which illustrates the importance of this motif in
many aspects of Japanese culture.
Back matter includes a history of Mt. Fuji, popular climbing
routes to the top, spots offering the best views, and maps for
accommodations.
In 1972, Yukio Ohyama, began his work as a photographer by
specializing in photos of steam locomotives. In 1976, he embarked
on his photos of Mt. Fuji, and in 1990, he built his own domed house
at the foot of the mountain. He is one of the most recognized
photographic authorities on Mt. Fuji in Japan.
Shigeki Yamashita established a PR photo agency in 1987. In 1996,
he began focusing on photographing natural scenery, and in the
same year, he spent 100 days camping out in a car and shooting
different faces of Mt. Fuji.
Shinto Shrines
A Guide to the Sacred Sites of Japan’s Ancient Religion
By Joseph Cali with John Dougill
For the first time, an informative, practical, and comprehensive guide
to sacred Shinto shrines
In recent years, there has been a significant rise in interest in
spiritual matters, including a strong surge toward Shinto. However,
until now, there has been no resource in English providing extensive
information about Shinto shrines.
Shinto is an ancient shamanistic religion, with roots stretching
back thousands of years. Yet it remains intricately woven into
Japanese culture. In an extensive introductory section, authors
Joseph Cali and John Dougill delve into the fascinating aspects of
the religion, clarifying its connections to Buddhism as well as its
customs, symbolism, and pilgrimage routes.
The guidebook showcases 66 major Shinto shrines throughout
Japan. Many of these sacred sites are World Heritage Sites
or National Treasures. In each comprehensive entry, the authors
highlight important spiritual features, physical features of the
shrine itself (architecture, design, and art), associated festivals, and
Timelink:
The Unofficial and Unauthorised Guide
to the Continuity of Doctor Who
By Jon Preddle
An in-depth exploration of the complex continuity of the world’s
longest running science fiction television programme, Doctor
Who. Over fifteen years in the making, Timelink offers a different
perspective on the history of the universe as told through the many
adventures of the Doctor. Author Jon Preddle presents fresh
theories and solutions to some of the many continuity anomalies
and discrepancies in the series.
This is one book that no self-respecting fan of Doctor Who can
be without. The analysis encompasses both the original series
which ran from 1963 to 1989, the one-off Paul McGann TV Movie
of 1996, the 2005 - 2008 Doctor Who revival helmed by Russell T
Davies, as well as Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures.
reddle’s stamina, invention and clever observations have
“Pthe grey matter firing - and somehow, he makes this beast
readable… The author has spent a decade calculating the Doctor’s age,
defining a Gallifreyan year and working out when Snakedancing was
banned on Manussa - and the resultant work would take another
ten years to fully absorb. Almost endless, Timelink is the answer to
everything you never thought you wanted to know.”
In the 1960s, the BBC screened 253 episodes of its cult
science fiction show Doctor Who, starring William Hartnell and
then Patrick Troughton as the time travelling Doctor. Yet by 1975,
the Corporation had wiped the master tapes of every single one
of these episodes. Of the 124 Doctor Who episodes starring Jon
Pertwee shown between 1970 and 1974, the BBC destroyed over
half of the original transmission tapes within two years of their
original broadcast.
In the years that followed, the BBC, along with dedicated fans of
the series, began the arduous task of trying to track down copies
of as many missing Doctor Who episodes as possible. The search
covered BBC sales vaults, foreign television stations, overseas
archives, and numerous networks of private film collectors, until
the tally of missing programmes was reduced to just 108 episodes.
For the first time, this book looks in detail at how the episodes
came to be missing in the first place, and examines how material
subsequently came to be returned to the BBC. Along the way, those
people involved in the recovery of lost slices of Doctor Who’s past
tell their stories in candid detail, many for the very first time.
No more rumours, no more misinformation, no more fan gossip.
The truth about Doctor Who’s missing episodes can now be
told in full!
