Total Solar Eclipse in China
July 15 – 24, 2009
with Professor Tom Balonek
Featuring a Post-trip Yangtze River Cruise
Dear Alumni and Friends of Colgate University:
On July 22, 2009, one of the greatest total solar eclipses of our lifetime will occur. It is with great pleasure that we invite
you to travel with us to China next summer to experience this astonishing event. We will view the eclipse from Oriental
Land, a park complex with broad lawns and groves of trees, referred to as “the lungs of Shanghai” for its fresh air. This
location provides one of the best opportunities for clear skies on the centerline of the path of totality where the eclipse is
at its longest duration over terra firma.
Tom Balonek, Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Colgate University, will prepare us for this astronomical phenomenon.
His observations and commentary will enable us not only to marvel at this natural wonder, but also to better
understand its complexity.
Besides the eclipse, this program explores many of the highlights of China, including the Great Wall, the Ming Tombs,
Beijing’s Forbidden City, the Olympic Village and Tiananmen Square, Xian’s famed terracotta warriors, and Shanghai’s
pulsing energy and colonial past.
This is truly a unique opportunity, as another eclipse of this duration will not occur again for a few centuries. I hope you
will look through the enclosed itinerary to find out more about this once in a lifetime trip. On this program, we are joined
by alumnae and friends of Smith College and Wellesley College, and their professors.
If you have any questions, or would like to make a reservation, contact Siemer & Hand Travel at (800) 451-4321 or
email travel@siemerhand.com. We hope you will join us for this memorable journey.
