MARIETTA
College
When you’re a Pioneer, you’re part of a
diverse and vibrant campus experience.
Celebrating its 175th anniversary during the 2009-10 academic
year, Marietta College is a four-year liberal arts college located in
Marietta, Ohio at the confluence of the Muskingum and Ohio rivers.
Tracing its roots to the Muskingum Academy begun in 1797,
the College was officially chartered in 1835. Today, Marietta College serves
a body of 1,400 full-time students. The College offers 42 majors and has
been listed among Baron’s Best Buys in College Education and Peterson’s
Competitive Colleges, and has been recognized as one of the top regional
comprehensive colleges by U.S. News & World Report and The Princeton
Review as well as one of the nation’s best by Forbes.com.
In 1835, Marietta College received its charter from the State of Ohio
to offer college-level degrees. Marietta College now includes more than 40
buildings over 129 acres located two blocks from downtown Marietta. Marietta
College is a private, nonsectarian, coeducational, contemporary liberal
arts college. As an institution of higher education, Marietta College seeks to
prepare highly qualified graduates through its educational programs. Consistently
ranked by U. S. News and World Report among the best liberal
arts colleges in the Midwest, Marietta has attained national recognition for
many of its programs, including studies in leadership education.
The fall enrollment of the College was 1,400, including students from
40 states and 10 countries. The male-to-female ratio is nearly 50:50, and
the student-to-faculty ratio is 12:1.
The community of Marietta, Ohio, was settled in 1788 by Revolutionary
War veterans and became the first settlement of the Northwest Territory.
Now a city of 14,000, Marietta saw its greatest growth during the oil boom of
the late 19th century. Still, Marietta has retained a particular pioneer spirit of
independence and outward New England charm. Its historical significance
also makes Marietta a popular location for tourists around the country.
Marietta is a riverboat town situated at the confluence of the Ohio and
Muskingum rivers, and many of the community’s most important celebrations
and activities are associated with the rivers. Marietta is part of the
Marietta-Parkersburg metropolitan area, which has a population of more
than 130,000.
Continued
Growth
Marietta’s hopes are high for the 2009 season, as it will
feature a talented core of young players that earned the
necessary experience for success in the OAC a year ago.
10th-year coach Patrick Holguin returns 15 letterwinners,
including eight starters from the 2008 squad but must replace four-time
All-OAC standout Jessica Martinez, the program’s second all-time leading
scorer with 28 goals.
Seven of the eight players to score a goal last year were freshmen and
six of them are back for 2009. Cara Nuss is the leading point scorer with
four goals and three assists, while Corryn Muench added four goals and
one assist and Chelsea Hennen contributed three goals and one assist. In
addition, Christina Tirpak, Hannah Conn and Tessa Harlow all return after
scoring one goal in 2008.
Muench, sophomore Jennifer Wilder and junior Marsha Hupp will
anchor the defense in front of either junior Helen Hetzel or senior Jenna
Freeman, who returns after not playing in 2008. Both goalkeepers have the
in-game experience to lead the Pioneers in 2009.
Marietta begins the season at Geneva (Pa.) on Sept. 2 before opening
at home with its annual four-team tournament on Sept. 5-6. Game one of
the tournament will feature Marietta against Bluffton. Wooster will then battle
St. Vincent (Pa.) in game two. The team will continue its non-conference
schedule throughout the rest of September, highlighted by a trip to Newport
News, Va., to take on host Christopher Newport on Sept. 20. The Pioneers’
OAC opener is slated for Oct. 2 against visiting Heidelberg. Four of Marietta’s
final six games will take place at home on Marietta Field.
Head coach
Head coach
Patrick Holguin
Holguin starts his 10th season with the women
As the head of both
Marietta College
soccer programs
for the past decade,
Patrick Holguin spends most of
his fall on the soccer field. The
2009 campaign will be no different.
Holguin enters his 10th season as
the women’s head coach; it will
also be his 12th year leading the
men’s program.
Sporting a career record of
82-60-18 (.569) with the women’s
program, Holguin holds the best
winning percentage among any
of the Pioneers’ past coaches. Holguin is also the only coach in school
history to achieve 12 wins in a season, a feat he accomplished in 2003 and
2004. He then led his 2005 Pioneers to a school record 14 wins. Holguin’s
2003 crew was also responsible for claiming Marietta’s best Ohio Athletic
Conference finish (two-way tie for third) since 1991. Under his direction,
the women have racked up 26 All-OAC and 16 Academic All-OAC honors.
In addition, four athletes were named Clyde A. Lamb recipients, while one
received the Betty Cleland award.
Holguin, the 2008 Men’s OAC Coach of the Year, has achieved similar
success with the men’s program, compiling a 77-100-18 (.441) career
record. His winning percentage ranks fifth among Pioneer soccer coaches.
In 2007, Holguin guided the men to a late-season run and earned the
school’s first OAC Tournament berth in 10 seasons. Marietta, who posted
an 11-7-3 record, took the next step in 2008. The fourth-seeded Pioneers
posted their first ever OAC Tournament win and went on to finish runnerup
in the 2008 OAC Tournament. In 2002, his team finished the season
12-5-2, the most victories by a squad since 1984. Holguin’s athletes have
accumulated 19 All-OAC and 14 Academic All-OAC honors. Among them
is Marcos Vaca, only the second player in Marietta history to earn All-OAC
honors in four straight years (2001-04).
A 1989 graduate from Quinnipiac College with a degree in International
Business, Holguin began his coaching career in Houston, Texas. From
1993-97, he was the head coach of the men and women’s club soccer
program at the University of Houston. He was also involved as a coach
with the South Texas Olympic Development Program and was the Director
of Player Development and Coaching with the Alliance Soccer Program.
Holguin remains involved with the Olympic Development Program
in West Virginia. He was also the Director of Player Development and
Coaching for the River Valley Soccer Club from 1999-2003. Holguin
returned to the role in 2008.
Holguin, who lives in Marietta, earned a master’s degree in Education
from Marietta College in 2008.
Assistant Coach
Stephen rose
Stephen Rose begins his
fifth year as an assistant
coach for the men and
women’s soccer programs
at Marietta College in 2009. It is his
third as a full-time member of the
department. Rose also assists in
the sports information office.
A graduate of Marietta High
School, Rose returned to his
hometown after attending Walsh
University where he received
his undergraduate degree in
Communications. He was a fouryear
starter for the Cavaliers and
garnered All-American Mideast Conference (AMC) honors twice. Rose
also played basketball at Walsh for one season.
In addition to his collegiate playing experience, Rose was also a
successful player with the local River Valley Soccer Club. Considering his
club coach was Patrick Holguin, Rose feels right at home on the Marietta
College soccer coaching staff.
Rose earned his National Soccer Coaches Association of America
(NSCAA) Advanced National Diploma in the summer of 2009. Rose also
completed his NSCAA National Diploma in 2008 and his United States
Soccer Federation (USSF) “D” license in 2006. He remains active with the
River Valley Soccer Club, where he coached the U-17 Boys team to State
Championship and a Region I appearance in 2009. Rose also coordinates
all of the local youth soccer tournaments and camps at Marietta College.
Rose, who lives in Marietta, completed his Master of Arts in Liberal
Learning in the spring of 2007.
Jen Simonetti begins her
first season as an assistant
coach with the men’s and
women’s soccer programs
in 2009.
Simonetti brings an
experienced coaching background
to Marietta. She spent the last
three years as an assistant with
the Waynesville High School
boy’s soccer team. While with the
Spartans, Simonetti was named
the Miami Valley Assistant Coach
of the Year in 2007. Simonetti also
and Field Coach at Waynesville from 2006-2009. Before Waynesville, she
was the assistant for the girl’s soccer team at Bellbrook High School.
In addition to her time at Waynesville and Bellbrook, Simonetti
coached the Metro FC in Kettering, Ohio. She also worked as a camp
clinician with Ohio Premier North in Euclid, Ohio, as well as other teams in
the area around Dayton, Ohio.
Simonetti, who earned a Bachelor of Science in Pre-Physical Therapy
collegiate coaching ranks with a solid playing resume. She was a fouryear
starter for Dayton from 2001-04. The defender/center midfielder
helped the Flyers win four Atlantic 10 Regular Season titles and three A-10
Tournament Championships during her time on the field. As a freshman,
Simonetti earned All-Atlantic 10 and All-Great Lakes Region honors as
Dayton made the NCAA Sweet 16. She repeated All-Atlantic 10 honors
as a sophomore and earned both awards again as a senior when she was
also named the A-10 Defensive Player of the Year. In addition, the National
Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and SoccerBuzz both
voted Simonetti an All-America selection in 2004.
Simonetti started as an outside defender for the Cincinnati LadyHawks
of the United States Women’s Soccer League in 2003. In 2008, she also
Because of her play, Simonetti was offered a spot on the women’s national
team.
Simonetti lives in Marietta.
Conference
D-III’s Best Conference
The 2008-09 year proved, once again, why the OAC is one of the
most prestigious Division III conferences in the country. The Mount
Union football team won its 10th national title. The Ohio Northern
volleyball team made its ninth straight NCAA Tournament appearance
and the program recorded its 32nd straight winning season. The
Heidelberg volleyball team made its second straight appearance in the NCAA
Regional Semifinals.
Ohio Northern softball made its first NCAA Championship appearance.
Heidelberg wrestling qualified a program best six student-athletes the NCAA
Tournament. The John Carroll and Capital men’s basketball teams advanced
to the NCAA Sweet 16. The Otterbein women’s golf team placed fifth, while the
Otterbein men placed 13th at the NCAA Championship. Mount Union men’s
tennis advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. In addition,
Ohio Northern’s Jimmy O’Brien claimed the indoor 800-meter run title. Individually,
the Conference was represented by over 50 All-America selections.
Academically, the OAC boasted numerous CoSIDA ESPN the Magazine Academic
All-Americans, along with regional and national coaching honors.
The Ohio Athletic Conference, the third oldest conference in college
athletics, is predated only by the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association
(1888) and the Big Ten (1895). The Conference is older than the World Series
and even the NCAA itself and has
survived two world wars, the Great
Depression, the Korean War and
the Vietnam Conflict. From a
modest beginning of six charter
members in 1902, the OAC grew
to as many as 24 members in the
mid-1920s.
Through the years, a total of
31 colleges and universities at one time or another have been members of the
OAC. Currently the Conference consists of 10 members, including Baldwin-
Wallace College, Capital University, Heidelberg University, John Carroll University,
Marietta College, Mount Union College, Muskingum University, Ohio
Northern University, Otterbein College and Wilmington College. Wilmington
became the 31st OAC member school on July 1, 2000.
In the OAC’s first year of existence, 1902, the first Conference champion
was crowned Case Tech won the football title with a 5-0-0 record. Outdoor
track was added a year later and a third sport, cross country, became
a Conference sport in 1914. More sports were steadily added to the OAC’s
repertoire throughout the years, culminating in the addition of women’s sports
in 1984. The Conference currently sponsors championships in 21 sports, 11
men’s and 10 women’s.
The enrollments at the 10 OAC institutions range from 1,200 to 4,500. All
of the schools were founded in the 19th century and have long and outstanding
academic reputations. While maintaining these high academic standards,
Ohio Athletic Conference athletic teams and athletes have consistently enjoyed
a great deal of success on a regional and national level. The athletic
competition is viewed not as an end in itself, but as an extension of the educational
programs.
Marietta field
Marietta Field
Patrick Holguin’s vision of having one of the nicest natural grass
soccer facilities in the region is now a reality. Marietta Field, the
long-time home of Marietta College soccer, underwent the final
phase of its evolution in the summer of 2008. The construction
of a press box and storage facility completed the dream of the 12th-year
head soccer coach.
“Marietta College soccer is blessed to have one of the finest, natural
grass soccer complexes around,” Holguin said. “The beautiful facility would
not be possible without the tremendous financial support of the Parents
Campaign and those that gave through the Pioneer Club.”
The Parents Campaign for the Field Project, led by Bob and Nancy
Gessner, was formed in 2004 to secure funding for the initial improvements
to the soccer field on the south end of campus. Remaining money from that
project, as well as additional funds raised by the Pioneer Club, allowed for
the addition of the press box.
The facility underwent a complete renovation before the 2005 season.
The College installed a new natural-grass, laser-leveled playing surface
with a state-of-the-art draining and sprinkler system, as well as bleachers
and a walkway connecting it to the rest of campus
The first competition on the new field was the 2005 Marietta College
Classic, held the first weekend of September.
Marietta
Administration
President, Dr. Jean A. Scott
A new era began at Marietta College
on July 15, 2000, when Dr. Jean A. Scott
became the 17th President of the College.
She is the first female president at Marietta
College.
Most recently, Scott was president of
Bradford College, in Haverhill, Mass.
Scott graduated with a major in history
from Westhampton College at the University
of Richmond where she was elected Phi
Beta Kappa and earned her A.B. degree in
1968. She then attended Harvard University
and received her M.A. in history in 1969 and her Ph.D. in history in 1974.
“I am very excited at the opportunity to lead the college with the rich
traditions and bright future that Marietta enjoys,” Scott said.
Since Scott’s arrival at Marietta the campus has grown to include
many new buildings and facilities, enriching the educational experience
for all of its students.
Athletics Director, Larry Hiser
Larry Hiser joined Marietta College
in March of 2008. He oversees a NCAA
Division III athletics program with 18 varsity
sports and the College’s recreation and
intramural programs and facilities.
Prior to joining Marietta, Hiser was
the Director of Athletics and Head Baseball
Coach at Endicott College in Beverly,
Mass., from 1995-2008. Under his watch
the Endicott teams won 37 conference
championships and participated in 47
NCAA or ECAC tournaments. His baseball
teams averaged over 20 wins per year in 13
seasons and won five league championships and one ECAC championship.
Endicott also successfully launched new programs for equestrian,
lacrosse and football, while improving its facilities that now rank among
the finest in New England.
He earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from Ohio Northern University
in 1987, where he was an all-conference shortstop on the Polar Bears
baseball team. He went on to earn a Master of Science in Physical Education/Athletic
Administration from Springfield College in Massachusetts,
where he was a graduate assistant. He joined Endicott College in the fall
of 1994 as the Gulls’ first baseball and basketball coach.
The Oregon, Ohio, native is married to the former Susan Chick (of
Williamstown, Mass.). The couple has two children, Dan, 10 and Allison, 8.
