Commissioner Potočnik invited DG ENV and<br />
the EEA to come forward with a paper on an<br />
enhanced EEA role in support of EU<br />
environment policy implementation, by e.g<br />
way of pilots on Air Quality and Waste<br />

‘We do need to strengthen our knowledge base on<br />
implementation. We cannot continue to have a situation on<br />
implementation where the Commission and Member States<br />
are looking at different data. We both need a body we trust<br />
to provide us with accurate data and state of the art,<br />
science-based <strong>assessments</strong>. We need an independent assessor<br />
if needed. This neutral and common information base for<br />
compliance monitoring should in my view be provided by the<br />
Agency. I suggest we develop a joint analysis of what such a<br />
reinforced role would imply, on the basis of one or two pilot<br />
cases e.g. on waste and on <strong>air</strong>. We need to start this process<br />
as soon as possible and I will be looking forward to develop<br />
