CONGRATULATIONS TO ALEX DO, SABRINA
COHAN & SHAUN WHIMPEY – CLASS OF 2012
On Thursday 14 March 2013, Professor Tam
Sridhar, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Monash
University presented three Vermont Year 12
students from the class of 2012 with a scholarship to
study engineering. The scholarship recipients in the
Faculty of Engineering for 2013 included Alex Do,
Sabrina Cohan and Shaun Whimpey, all from
Vermont Secondary College.
Congratulations to Alex, Sabrina and Shaun on
receiving such a prestigious award and thanks to
Joanna Alexander, Assistant Principal, for attending
the presentation ceremony on behalf of Vermont
Secondary College. The College wishes Alex,
Sabrina and Shaun every success in the future!
CONGRATULATIONS TO ALEX MORGAN
Alex has now returned from a successful campaign
at the World Track Cycling Championships and
altitude training (altitude house) in Canberra with the
road team. While in Canberra Alex was officially
inducted into the 2013 Jayco-AIS World Tour
Academy. This sponsorship will provide much
needed financial support for Alex and his teammates
to further pursue their studies and cycling career.
Cycling Australia (CA), the Australian Institute of
Sport (AIS) and JAYCO heralded a new era for
Australian cycling in Canberra today at the official
launch of the 2013 Jayco-AIS World Tour Academy.
The new-look Academy will provide the pathway for
Australia’s most talented Under 23 riders into the
World Championship, Olympic Games and
professional ranks. CA’s Performance Director Kevin
Tabotta said that the Jayco-AIS World Tour
Academy team will be presented as the Australian
national team in all European races.
“The Academy will provide increased international
racing opportunities for our emerging talent and will
also provide room for Australian UCI continental and
NRS teams to have a greater involvement in the
development of these young athletes.”Additionally,
this structure will help ensure that athletes stay
motivated, professional and challenged throughout
the long season. There will be great upward
pressure, with riders on the fringes challenging for
spots," Mr Tabotta said.
Members of the men’s team have completed a
training camp at the AIS ahead of their final event in
Australia - the Oceania Road Championships in
Canberra, March 14-17, before the team’s first event
in the European road season at the Giro del
Belvedere in Italy on April 1.
This week’s Newsletter is a report from a student who participated in the all-day Student Leadership Forum.
“ Hi my name is Caitrin MacDowall from 7.3 and I am the Year 7 Hotham Student Leader. On Wednesday 13 March I participated in the VSC
Student Leadership Forum. We were given the opportunity to get to know our fellow leaders of VSC. We were asked to work in groups, doing
activities that would help us improve our leadership, representative and teamwork skills. One of the activities was to brainstorm what qualities a
good leader needs to have. This allowed me to see the qualities that I possess and the areas that I can improve on.
For me leadership is about being persuasive and confident. A leader needs to be lots of things: caring, understanding, responsible, helpful, and
should always lead by example.
Finally, what to do if you have lost something at school If you are looking for any lost property items, first, check at the General Office. Secondly,
ask Mrs Clements and thirdly, inquire at the Year 7 Student Managers Office. At the moment in our office we have three umbrellas, two VSC sport
caps, locker keys, iPhone ear phones, iPad case, playing cards and colored pencils.
Become a Bully Stopper
On 15 March 2013, the National Day of ‘Action Against Bullying and
Violence’, a major bullying prevention campaign was launched: Bully
Stoppers: Make a Stand, Lend a Hand.
The campaign is based on a series of resources available online that
empower students, parents, teachers and principals to ‘make a stand,
lend a hand’ and stop bullying.
Bully Stoppers supports parents, teachers and principals in working
together to make sure schools are safe and supportive places, where
bullying is taken seriously and not ignored.
Psychologist Andrew Fuller and cyber safety expert Susan McLean
have provided tips and advice to help you support your child if they
‘Lift up thine eyes’
VSC Student Dress Code
@ 26 November 2012
The VSC student uniform creates a sense of individual and collective pride; it is a condition of enrolment that all students wear full
College uniform, including when travelling to and from the College. We expect our parent community to support their children and the
College by ensuring students present in full College uniform every day, including on the journey to and from school.
VSC has no designated summer or winter uniform. Thus, students have a broad range of options but are expected to manage the
choices offered in a responsible manner within the guidelines below, and befitting the College and its reputation. The College uniform
must be worn on all excursions except where permission to the contrary has been given, for example where the nature of the
excursion justifies free dress. If, for any reason, a student is unable to be in complete school uniform, he/she must bring a note from
a parent explaining the reason. This must be brought before school to the relevant House staff office, where the appropriate pass will
be issued. Students requiring to be out of uniform for medical reasons for a protracted time (greater than one week) will require a
medical certificate.
Personal Presentation:
Students are required to present neatly and appropriately for school each day. For students with pierced ears, plain gold or silver
sleepers or studs only will be accepted. Excessive, blatantly obvious or perceived dangerous jewellery is not permitted, particularly:
excessive bangles, large bracelets, long or large earrings, large necklaces or similar; rings/studs on the face (nose, lip, eyebrow etc.).
These present a considerable Occupational Health & Safety risk. No responsibility is taken for any loss of jewellery worn to school.
Obvious and excessive make-up and coloured nail polish must not be worn to school. Hair should be kept tidy and away from the
face and should not be extreme in style or colour. Long hair should be tied back where appropriate for safety reasons, especially in
Science and Technology classes.
Badges related to College activities are allowed, for example student leaders, book club, music, production and/or for College
sanctioned fund-raising initiatives like SIDS, Legacy, ANZAC Day etc.
Should parents have any questions, we request that the College be contacted to clarify expectations.
Out-of-uniform Days:
The College runs a number of ‘out-of-uniform’ days over the school year as part of our community service program, for example to
raise funds for College resources, or local, national and international programs and charities. Dress on these days should be smart
casual, appropriate to the College context. As they present a real Occupational Health and Safety risk, particularly in Science and
Technology classes, thongs (or other open / ill-fitting footwear) are never to be worn.
N.B. Students are still required to bring appropriate clothing for Phys. Ed. Classes etc. on these days.
Sports carnivals:
As our Sports Carnivals are House competitions, students are encouraged to dress in their House colours: blue for Hotham, green for
Macedon, red for Stirling. ‘Sunsmart’ guidelines still apply on these days.
Special uniform items:
Some senior subjects or student groups in the College purchase special uniform items, for example the Production t-shirt and Duke of
Edinburgh hooded-windcheater. These items are only to be worn with express permission of the College.
Supply of uniform items:
The College’s approved uniform supplier for 2013 is PSW (Ringwood East). The College community will be kept informed via the
College newsletter and website of any changes. Should parents have any questions, we request that the College be contacted
to clarify expectations.
Families experiencing difficulty purchasing the correct uniform items should contact the College and/or Student Wellbeing
Coordinators. The VSC Community Association operates the College’s Second-hand Uniform Shop – details are published in the
newsletter.
2013 International Competitions and Assessments for Schools –
Computer Skills
Welcome to the 2013 International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS). For over 30 years ICAS has taken
place annually in schools throughout Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, the Pacific region and
South Africa. Your child is invited to participate in ICAS in 2013.
ICAS provides an opportunity for all students in Years 3-12 to gain a measure of their own achievement in an external testing
situation. It provides teachers, parents and students with comprehensive reporting of results in the areas of Computer Skills,
English, Mathematics, Science, Spelling and Writing. The tests are an excellent preparation for national tests and the student
report is useful for highlighting your child’s strengths and weaknesses.
All students receive a certificate and an individual student report indicating which questions they answered correctly and
their score compared with the rest of the students tested. The certificate and individual student report are also suitable for your
child to include in a portfolio.
Certificates are awarded for each year level as follows:
High Distinction to the top 1% of entrants
Distinction to the next 10% of entrants
Credit to the next 25% of entrants
Participation to all other participating students.
A UNSW medal is awarded when the highest score in each year level in each State in each subject is judged to be sufficiently
meritorious. Students must sit on the official sitting dates to be eligible for a UNSW medal.
Why work in the HCS industry

FOCUS ON CAREERS IN
HEALTH & COMMUNITY SERVICES (HCS)
Careers:
One of the most diverse industry groups in the
Australian workforce- there are over 500 different
occupations (not just doctors, nurses and
paramedics!)
tipped to be the fastest growing industry in
Australia in the next 5 years due to our ageing
population, demand for children’s services, high
consumer demand and skill shortages
highest number of national and regional skill
shortage occupations out of all industries in
Australia
as technology develops, so do the jobs (i.e.,
medical engineering, nuclear therapies, dental
prosthetics)
lots of new jobs are yet to be invented over the
next 10 years (i.e., work and research with stem
cells)
you can work here or overseas and in many
occupations you can work flexible hours and travel
and also open your own business (i.e., Massage)
if you don’t want to work directly with people, there
are many occupations where you can work ‘behind
the scenes” in research, policy development,
health information management and information
technologies.
There are over 500 occupations in the HCS sector.
Community services include occupations such as Youth
Work, Mental Health, Juvenile Justice, Alcohol and Other
Drugs Work, Child Protection, Disability Work, Child
Care and Aged Care.
FOCUS ON CAREERS IN
HEALTH & COMMUNITY SERVICES (HCS)
Education: Choosing the right subjects at school that
will support further education and training pathways will
depend on what HCS occupation you would like to
pursue. See your career adviser for up to date advice
Employment Prospects: Currently there is a shortage
of skilled workers in many HCS occupations, such as
nursing, child care, medical specialists, and health
technicians. There is also an ageing workforce, which will
create many jobs for young people over the next 5 – 10
years when many skilled workers will retire.
“Expansion is anticipated in diagnostic services, allied
health, complementary and alternative health services,
childcare, aged and community support services”. Taken
from http://hcscareers.vic.edu.au
Pathways into HCS careers: Depending on what
occupation you would like to pursue, you can undertake
study through vocational education, university study or
through a traineeship.
You can study HCS courses at the majority of TAFE and
university institutes and also private colleges like the
Southern School of Natural Therapies and Endeavour
College of Natural Health. Go to
www.careersthatmatter.com.au/ to find out more.
What next
Fill out the online Career Map quiz at
www.careergov.com.au/careermapcsh to work out
which HCS jobs you would be suited to.
