<strong>in</strong>to Kiswahili and K<strong>in</strong>yarwanda and published as a brochure <strong>in</strong>tended for <strong>the</strong> <strong>trade</strong>rs<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves. A weekly radio programme Mupaka ni Shamba Letu [The Border, Our Doma<strong>in</strong>],<br />

which is produced by <strong>International</strong> <strong>Alert</strong> and broadcast <strong>in</strong> Bukavu, Goma and Uvira, will be<br />

used as a tool to dissem<strong>in</strong>ate <strong>in</strong>formation.<br />

• Women <strong>trade</strong>rs from various nationalities will come toge<strong>the</strong>r to discuss <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> challenges<br />

<strong>the</strong>y face based on <strong>the</strong>se conclusions. With <strong>the</strong> help of local partner organisations on each<br />

<strong>border</strong>, <strong>the</strong>se meet<strong>in</strong>gs will act as a catalyst for <strong>the</strong> communication of advocacy messages<br />

by <strong>trade</strong>rs and for a process of dialogue with <strong>the</strong> authorities on all sides of <strong>the</strong> <strong>border</strong>s. The<br />

<strong>trade</strong>rs’ jo<strong>in</strong>t message will be streng<strong>the</strong>ned by <strong>the</strong> creation of a network <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g several<br />

nationalities and designed to overcome tensions and mutual suspicions.<br />

<strong>International</strong> <strong>Alert</strong> will also work <strong>in</strong> collaboration with <strong>the</strong> <strong>border</strong> agencies and prov<strong>in</strong>cial<br />

authorities <strong>in</strong> DRC’s North and South Kivu prov<strong>in</strong>ces by provid<strong>in</strong>g customs officers with tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> taxation/regulations and gender, governance and human rights. Traders will receive support <strong>in</strong><br />

sett<strong>in</strong>g up associations, re<strong>in</strong>forc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir entrepreneurial skills and develop<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir understand<strong>in</strong>g<br />

of taxation and <strong>the</strong> regulations <strong>in</strong> force. A steer<strong>in</strong>g committee will be set up by <strong>the</strong> prov<strong>in</strong>cial<br />

authorities with representation from all <strong>the</strong> <strong>border</strong> agencies <strong>in</strong>volved. The steer<strong>in</strong>g committee<br />

will be responsible for oversee<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> implementation of <strong>the</strong> project and address<strong>in</strong>g any problems<br />

related to small cross-<strong>border</strong> <strong>trade</strong>.<br />

With<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> scope of its partnership with <strong>International</strong> <strong>Alert</strong>, UN Women has f<strong>in</strong>anced entrepreneurship<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g sessions for women engaged <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>formal cross-<strong>border</strong> <strong>trade</strong> <strong>in</strong> Goma. Follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>itial<br />

positive results <strong>in</strong> Rwanda, <strong>the</strong> organisation <strong>in</strong>tends to pursue its advocacy for <strong>the</strong> implementation<br />

of a microcredit scheme <strong>in</strong> Burundi and DRC. UN Women will also work closely with <strong>border</strong><br />

authorities by organis<strong>in</strong>g tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g sessions on gender-sensitive communications, and is committed to<br />

pursu<strong>in</strong>g its efforts to ensure that women <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>formal cross-<strong>border</strong> <strong>trade</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Great Lakes<br />

region are taken <strong>in</strong>to account <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> development of national and regional policies and legislation.<br />

1.2 Methodology<br />

This study relates to four <strong>border</strong> sites:<br />

Bukavu-Cyangugu (DRC-Rwanda): Bukavu site (see Map 1)<br />

Uvira-Gatumba (DRC-Burundi): Uvira site (see Map 1)<br />

Aru-Arua (DRC-Uganda): Arua site (see Map 2)<br />

Cibitoke-Bugarama (Burundi-Rwanda): Cibitoke site (see Map 1)
