BE AN ARIZONA HUMANE
SOCIETY
PARTY ANIMAL!
Birthday Party Hosting Information
Here’s the SCOOP!
Children of all ages are invited and encouraged to share their Birthday Celebration with the homeless animals
awaiting adoption at the Arizona Humane Society!
The festivities begin with a fun opportunity to “name” a shelter animal which also gives us the opportunity to discuss
the importance of humane names and language. A personal tour of the facility and an age-specific, Humane
Education activity follow, each designed to communicate, in a fun and memorable way, the importance of kindness
and compassion toward animals. Later, after a special visitor or activity, the Birthday Party Animal and guests
celebrate their special day with friends and family.
We’ll also include a very important craft activity so that Party Celebrants can rest assured that they played a big part
in helping our animals to find a forever home --- and --- how they are an integral part of changing the future for
homeless animals in our community.
Because our homeless animals may find the excitement a bit too stimulating, private visits from shelter animals are
not a part of Birthday Celebrations other than those we meet on the tour. However, we spend a good deal of time
out in the shelter so there are always surprises in store! Of course, you are invited and encouraged to visit our
adoptable animals after the Party has concluded, or during your private party time as a family.
Why We’re The Purr-fect Place!
Parties are held at our beautiful Nina Mason Pulliam Campus for Compassion, in a private room with
spectacular views of South Mountain. Because we are committed to creating a memorable experience for our
Party Animals, you will find the room beautifully decorated with and AHS color-coordinated theme and a
personalized birthday message! When the Party has ended, we’ll take care of the clean-up! You are free to
leave with the knowledge that you have provided your child, or family member, with an absolutely
unforgettable Birthday memory and supported the animals at the Arizona Humane Society at the same time!
Service Learning
Our Humane Education department is dedicated to providing service learning opportunities for children in all
of the activities we offer at the Shelter. Children have a keen understanding of the importance of family and
great compassion for those who are less fortunate. Their natural affinity toward animals, and the empathy it
prompts, is the key that unlocks that compassion and creates action via being of service toward animals. What
better partner to a Birthday Celebration!
Birthday Celebrations for children give us a great opportunity to show kids the power of one person to create
significant change for animals. We encourage all in attendance to bring either a can of pet food or treats ---
or a gently used towel or blanket, for our homeless animals. In fact, some of our Birthday Party Animals insist
that their guests bring gifts for our animals instead of for them! Party Animals who bring “gifts” for our
animals may be eligible for recognition as an Arizona Humane Society Humane Hero!
We feel that the future for animals in the state of Arizona, lies squarely in the hands of our children and we are
committed to sharing that very important message with them in a light, fun and memorable way, that
integrates beautifully with their Birthday Celebration.
We respectfully request that you please take a moment to closely review the following pages that detail our
Birthday Party specifics. If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions, please feel free to contact our
Humane Education Department via email: humaneed@azhumane.org or by phone at 602-997-7586 ext. 1015.
Office hours may vary, so email communication ensures the most expeditious response.
A Special Gift
Because we are so grateful to you for choosing the Arizona Humane Society at which to hold your Birthday
Celebration, we have a very special gift for each of our AHS Party Animals. Each person for whom a Party is
booked is gifted with the extraordinary and unforgettable opportunity to actually name one of our shelter‘s
homeless animals who is seeking adoption into a loving family! The Birthday Celebrant can then follow his or
her named animal’s progress online until he/she finds a forever home! What better way to celebrate a
Birthday!
How Do I Schedule a Party
Generally, Parties are held on weekends, but we will do our very best to meet your scheduling needs, whatever
the day! We are at your service and will take whatever time you need to answer all of your questions. PLEASE
NOTE: We receive many requests for Birthday Parties and the calendar fills quickly. In the event that your first
choice of date/time is not available, please have a few additional dates and/or times in mind when you email us
expressive behavior may affect the animals they so love.
To repeat, we do respectfully request that each Party Animal --- adult or child --- completes a Liability Form
Compassionate Conversation Discussion Tips --- Shelter Animal Interaction
The following tips are designed to help you plan a positive and poignant discussion with your child about customary
behavior around animals, particularly homeless Shelter animals. We’ll start with a few general points:
Choose a quiet, uninterrupted time when you have the full attention of your child without the competition of TV, video
games, radios and texting. Mealtimes and bedtime are good choices.
Use soft, supportive tones and a welcoming demeanor so that your child remains attentive and engaged.
Pause frequently throughout the discussion to ask questions that qualify the effectiveness of your words, i.e., “Does that
make sense” --- “What do you think about that” --- “Any questions on that” Non-threatening questions are great ways
to assess if your words are connecting.
Paraphrase your child’s responses. If your child responds to something you say, repeat his/her
words/concepts back in a slightly different form to show you were listening. For example, if your child says,
“I think that people should always adopt from a shelter instead of buying a pet from a pet store,”
you might respond with, “I agree with you --- It is very responsible of you to think of the welfare of
shelter animals who need homes by suggesting that people adopt rather than “buy” a
companion animal.”
With regard to discussion specifics, there are a few key points you may wish to consider:
The most important concept you can communicate to your child regarding animal interaction, is empathy. And the
easiest way to do that is to use the following words, “How would you feel if …” Empathy is when we understand how
another person or animal feels. Once a child feels empathy, he or she can then move into compassion, which typically
inspires action. So, to inspire empathy, consider watching an animal-themed program or movie with your child, such as
our program, Animal Cops Phoenix, on Animal Planet. When you see an animal in a difficult situation, gently ask your
child, “Gosh, can you imagine how he/she feels! How would you feel if that were you” You are asking your
child to place him/herself into the experience of the animal --- a very effective empathy-building tool. You
are also using gender for the animal, another humane, and very important, bridge builder!
Bringing this full circle into our Shelter environment, in your pre-visit discussion you might say, “How
do you think the shelter animals might feel if a group of noisy kids stuck their hands into their
kennels How would you feel if someone stuck his/her hand into your bedroom window unexpectedly ---
it’s the same isn’t it” And your empathy bridge is officially under construction!
And just a quick reminder to always use gender terms for animals. Animals are not an “it” --- they each have a gender
along with individual personalities and backgrounds. Consider the feelings elicited by each of these very similar
sentences. “I found an injured dog and took it to the shelter” vs. “I found an injured dog and took her to the shelter.
Using gender in our discussions about animals is a very subtle way of building the bridge of empathy that creates
compassionate kids --- and repetition is key in creating consistent change!
Remind your child of the specifics of the event he/she will be attending. Specifically, no hands inserted
through kennel or cage bars, no screaming around the animals, no running in the shelter, and no banging
on the kitty casita glass. Use the bridge of empathy to make your points, i.e., “How would you feel if
…someone just showed up and banged on your bedroom window” Gently remind them that Shelter
animals are homeless and are waiting for the right family to adopt them, so it is important that they
know they are safe and loved during their hopefully brief Shelter stay.
And finally --- let your child know how very proud you are of him/her for their interest in learning
more about how to help animals. The long term value of praising and acknowledging their great
choices --- particularly about animals --- can never be minimized. And helping animals is always a
GREAT choice!
