Areas of application
Processing
Pigment Disperser MD 20 is a dispersing agent for titanium dioxide and
other inorganic pigments and fillers. It differs from most other organic and
inorganic dispersing agents in that it can be employed in water alone and
in mixtures of water and organic solvents, such as mixtures that largely
consist of glycols or glycol ethers. It performs particularly well in emulsion
paints in which the vehicle predominately consists of propylene glycol.
These paints dry to a very high gloss and they are virtually free of haze.
Gloss and satin gloss emulsion paints can be prepared by mixing
Pigment Disperser MD 20 with propylene glycol and then dispersing the
titanium dioxide in the vehicle, either alone or in combination with other
inorganic pigments or extenders that act as matting agents. We would
recommend adding Pigment Disperser MD 20 at a rate of between 0.5%
and 1%, expressed as solids as a proportion of the pigment and fillers.
Customers need to carry out their own trials to determine the optimum
level of addition that is required to ensure good wetting, high gloss and
high stability in storage when developing formulations that contain
Pigment Disperser MD 20. Factors such as the relative surface area of pigments
and interactions between the polymer dispersion and other additives
can have a variety of effects on emulsion paints which are too numerous
for us to take into account in our own trials. This also includes testing
formulations to ensure that their viscosity remains stable when they are
stored at temperatures of ca. 50 °C.
Safety
General
Safety Data Sheet
Labelling
The usual safety precautions when handling chemicals must be observed.
In particular, the place of work must be well ventilated if large quantities
are being processed, the skin should be protected, and safety glasses
should be worn at all times.
A Safety Data Sheet has been compiled for Pigment Disperser MD 20 that
contains up-to-date information on all questions relevant to safety.
According to all the data at our disposal, Pigment Disperser MD 20 does
not need to be labelled as a dangerous substance or preparation as
defined in the relevant European Union directives (substances directive
1967/548/EC and preparations directive 1999/45/EC) according to their
current status.
Storage
Pigment Disperser MD 20 must not be allowed to come into contact with
metals or alloys that are susceptible to corrosion. It is important to ensure
that containers are kept tightly sealed, and the headspace of bulk storage
tanks must be kept saturated with water vapour.
Pigment Disperser MD 20 has a shelf life of one year at a temperature of
10 – 30 °C.
