Bears in our Neighbourhoods
This is the time of year where our local bears emerge from hibernation. Having spent a long winter
living on only their body fat while hibernating, they are now very hungry. In some cases they will be
accompanied by newborn cubs, and these vulnerable little creatures need their mother's guidance in
learning how to forage for suitable food.
Despite our local forests having all the natural food they need, bears are very intelligent animals and
they have quickly learned about the food that is easily and readily available close by – human garbage.
And this is why we see bears wandering in our gardens and streets. They are seeking this easily
obtained food. And once they have located a source, they will return time after time.
We need to discourage bears from roaming around our neighbourhoods, and the simple answer is to
give them no reason to be there. Simply put, it is against the law to feed dangerous wildlife in any way.
Until the morning of garbage pick-up, no odorous garbage should be outside and accessible to wildlife.
It must be stored in the house, garage, sturdy shed or bear-resistant enclosure. You can freeze meat,
fish, bones and plate scrapings until collection day. You can purchase a bear-resistant container if you
need to keep some garbage outside. For more information about recommended products, call
And what should you do if you encounter a bear First, you need to understand that the bear is
basically a shy animal that wishes us no harm. However, a bear’s natural wariness is lessened with
every visit to the community that produces a food reward. We need to make bears aware that this is our
territory, and they are not welcome on our property. If you see a bear in your yard, for example, select a
safe place (on your deck or at an open window) and shout loudly at the bear to go away. Make lots of
noise by banging pots and pans, and continue this until he leaves. Your voice distinguishes you as the

species that he wants to avoid.
Should you encounter a bear when you are away from your home, stay calm and do not run. Speak
to the bear in a calm voice and back away. You can speak in any language you choose as it is not the
words that have meaning to the bear, but the tone of your voice. When you reach a safe place, report
the bear sighting to 604.990.BEAR (2327).
We live in bear country, and this is an environment that many people envy. For more information about
living safely in bear country, go to www.northshorebears.com or call 604.317.4911. And come and visit
the North Shore Black Bear Society information booth at community events, such as West Vancouver
Community Day, Canada Day at the Waterfront Park and the Coho Festival. The volunteers will be
happy to meet you and answer your questions.
