Issue No. 2003-03 SGS Newsletter August 2003
THE PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Several members have told me that getting
good speakers and having interesting presentations
should be a high priority for our SGS Reunion. I
hope we have met those expectations. The biographical
sketches of Dr. Dorothy Boyd-Rush and
Donald W. Moore, CGRS appear on page 7 of this
Newsletter. They are our after dinner speakers for 4
– 6 September, inclusive. Additionally, several
members have agreed to give 12 different presentations
on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning on
a wide variety of interesting subjects. Our program,
combined with exceptional tour opportunities in the
Historical Triangle area of Williamsburg, Jamestown,
and Yorktown should contribute to one of our
best Reunions yet. Please complete the Reunion
Registration Form in this Newsletter and mail it to
me as soon as possible.
AND, we plan to document the Reunion by
publishing a Souvenir Book for sale to attendees as
well as to those who will not be able to attend. The
Souvenir Book will contain highlights of the business
meetings, an updated copy of the Constitution
and By-laws, a copy of each of the member presentations
and after dinner speeches, a list of the Reunion
attendees, and Reunion photographs. Ordering
information will be published in the November
Newsletter.
Bring family photos, family compilations
and other items you would like to display in the
Reunion Hospitality Room. Put your name on
each item unless it is considered a handout.
Descendants should respond to the request
for information on CAPT John Seelye, SGS
# 300, to the Town Historian of Lindley, NY. See
the article on the 20 September Plaque Dedication
in this Newsletter. Lindley, NY is on U.S. Route
15 just north of the Pennsylvania border.
Please send me your recommendation for
the SGS Reunion in 2005. My current inclination
is to propose having it in the central USA to make
it easier for more members to attend.
I’m still looking for recommendations for
the Posthumous Volunteer Hall of Honor, sponsored
by the Federation of Genealogical Societies.
The criterion includes the “amount and type of
volunteer service rendered” but does not include
“background, years of research, education, etc.”
I’ve heard of no Seeley descendants who
have been killed or injured in the Iraq War. I wish
all our Armed Services personnel a safe return
from the fields of conflict.
1656 in Lower Norfolk County, Virginia. In 1996,
he completed American Genealogy: A Basic
Course, and in 1999 became a Certified Genealogical
Record Specialist. He is a graduate of the
National Institute of Genealogical Research
(2000), the Virginia Institute on Genealogical
Research (2001), and the Institute of Genealogy
and Historical Research (2002). Mr. Moore has
served as Governor-at-Large (2001-2003), associate
newsletter editor (2002-), and Vice President
(2003-2005) of the Virginia Genealogical Society;
Deputy Registrar of the Virginia Society, Order of
the Founders and Patriots of America (2001- );
and President of the Virginia Beach Genealogical
Society (2002-2003). Mr. Moore is the owner of
Antecedents® LLC, a genealogical and family
history research business. He is a member of the
National Genealogical Society, the Virginia Genealogical
Society, the Virginia Beach Genealogical
Society, and the Association of Professional
Genealogists. He is also a member of several lineage
organizations, including the National Huguenot
Society, Jamestowne Society, Order of the
Founders and Patriots of America, Sons of the
American Revolution, and Sons of Confederate
Veterans.
As the reunion gets closer it is time to start
thinking about the some of the sights to be
seen in the “Historic Virginia Triangle.” Due to
the ever-changing national security threat levels,
it’s impossible to plan a trip to the Navy
bases which regulate admission to their facilities
based on these threat levels. At press
time we were still working out the final details
for the organized tours. Wednesday will be
the Jamestown/Yorktown trip and we have
discussed several different prices averaging
approximately $38.00. This will be on a motor
coach, with a guide, and time for shopping
and lunch in Yorktown. Sunday is the Plantation
tour. Those participating will travel on a
motor coach with a tour guide and visit three
plantations. We also have several prices on
this as well; the average was $59.00. For
those interested in seeing Colonial Williamsburg
or any of the other sights in Williamsburg,
the city’s mass transit system has a stop
in front of the hotel. The hotel will often have
complimentary tickets for the bus, but the cost
is only about two dollars. You can find out
more about the schedule and stops at the
following web address: http://
QUERY UPDATES
Update to Query #0305-3 Re: Anna Seeley Nichols
Martha Usnick (FEUSNICK@cs.com) had asked for information on an Anna Seely, b. 24 Feb.
1809, and d. 1863 in Farmersville, NY. She had information on Anna’s children and husband
(John Nichols) but couldn’t locate Anna’s parents. Ruth S. Johnson has identified Anna as
likely to be SGS #1089 in the Nathaniel line. This Anna is the youngest dau. of Benjamin
Seelye and Olive Rood, aged 12 in 1820. Two of Anna’s brothers lived just west of Farmersville,
one of her children is a Benjamin and another is named Ormus, the name of a cousin who
lived near Anna’s parents. Anyone who can provide further verification of Anna’s identity
should contact Martha and also send the information to your Query Editor.
Update to Query #0305-5 Re: Capt. John Seelye
See the article elsewhere in this newsletter about the dedication of a plaque for Capt. John
NEW QUERIES
Query 0308-1 Submitted by June McColm (mjune31@msn.com)
June asked if we had any information on her gggg grandmother Mima Seely (or Seeley), b. 9
March 1793 and d. 19 May 1869, Sandy Creek, IL, m. Aaron Gaylord 19 Dec. 1815. June had
been unable to locate Mima’s parents.
SGS Interim Response: I tentatively identified Mima as Jemima Seely, SGS # 1798, dau. of
James Seely and Nancy Westlake in the Obadiah line as shown in the Sixth Generation SGS
publication. Dan Seelye agreed that this matched his information. If anyone is related to this
line please contact June to share information.
QUERIES (Continued)
Query 0308-2 Submitted by Philip N. Eisner (eisnerppe@comcast.net)
Philip is searching for information on his wife’s ggg grandfather Robert H. Seely, b. abt. 1785
and m. in Goshen, NY Sarah Waters (1788-1872). Their daughter Bridget married Henry Whetton
Brevoort of New York City.
SGS Interim Response: This Robert Seely doesn’t seem to be accounted for in the SGS Publications.
Dan Seelye had an inquiry in 2001 that indicated that Robert and Sarah Waters Seely were ‘of
Orange Co., NY’ and that Henry Brevoort later moved to Allentown, PA. If you can identify
this family please forward your information to Philip and send a copy to Linda.
Query 0308-3 Submitted by Alveretta Berg (aberg@jamadots.com)
Alveretta submitted information on her mother’s family showing descent from Daniel Seeley
and his wife Olive Mead through their son Alanson Seeley and grandson John N. Seeley. She
wanted to know if she is related to our Seeleys.
SGS Interim Response: Alanson Seeley was identified as SGS #3502, son of Daniel of the
Obadiah Seeley line. His information is included in The Seventh Generation volume. If you are
related to this line please exchange information with Alveretta and send me a copy of any correspondence
of interest to our readers.
Query 0308-4 Submitted by Jean Little (littles_1@charter.net)
Jean’s grandfather, Roscoe Elmer Seeley (b. 1895 in Gratiot Co. MI) was raised by his uncle
Alanson E. Seeley and his wife Martha Goodall. Roscoe’s parents were Frank E. Seeley and
Jennie (Virginia) Nicely. Jennie died giving birth to Roscoe. Roscoe had older siblings Ralph,
Raymond B., Vernon, Leo and Grace. Census information indicates that Alanson was b. in either
NY or MI and that his parents were b. in OH.
SGS Interim Response: Alanson E Seeley and Frank E Seeley are listed as children of Alanson
Seeley #3502 (see above Query) in information supplied by Dan Seelye. A Family Group
sheet has been sent to both Alveretta and Jean.
Query 0308-5 Submitted by Kimberley Seeley Miller (cansing64@hotmail.com)
Kimberley has little information on her father’s family. She believes her grandfather was Edward
Seeley who d. in 1970 and that his father was named Forrest Seeley. She thinks her
grandfather resided in Jamestown and Olean, NY.
SGS Interim Response: Dian Little suggested that Kimberley check census information to try
to get her line back a generation or two or at least get a bit more information on these two men.
Query 0308-6 Submitted by Brice Clagett (bclagett@cov.com)
Brice traces his ancestry to John Sealey a mariner who settled in SC by 1682. There are some
indications he may have been related to the Sealey family of Isle of Shoals, ME. His son was
Benjamin Sealey, living in SC 1686 – 1700. Benjamin’s son was William Sealey, d. 1747, a
member of Euhaw Baptist Church, Euhaw, Granville, now Jasper Co. SC.
SGS Interim Response: No response to date from the Query Team. If any readers are familiar
with Sealeys in SC or Isle of Shoals, ME, please contact Brice and share any pertinent information
with me.
Query 0308-7 Submitted by Richard E. Elden (rainforest@rcn.com)
Dick Elden says he is descended from Rebecca Seeley and her first husband Isaac Bloomer.
According to a family history by Mary Hodges, Rebecca was b. in Danbury, CT abt. 1766 to
Gideon Seeley, a direct descendant of Nathaniel Seeley, and she d. 8 May 1850. Dick asked for
help in identifying her line.
SGS Interim Response: According to the Sixth Generation volume Gideon Seely (SGS #402
in the Obadiah line) had a dau. Rebecca who was b. 14 Jul 1771 in So. Salem, NY and who d.
May 1850 in Geneva, NY. She married 1 st James Bloomer and 2 nd James/.John Hogarth. Can
anyone clarify these discrepancies If so, please contact Dick and your Query Editor.
HOW TO SUBMIT A QUERY
If you would like to submit a query please follow a
few guidelines.
Be specific and detailed: Give us as much information
as you have about the person or family in question,
especially dates and locations.
What resources have you already consulted The
SGS Publications The census Cemetery records
Ancestry.com
What exactly do you want to know Parent’s names
and details Information on siblings Information on a
family marrying into the Seeley family
After your query is printed please keep us informed
about any information you receive or any further progress
you make on your own. Other members may
also be interested or related to your line. One more
name, date or place may be the key to connecting your
line to another.
Also make sure we have your current email and normal
address – sometimes we get information several
months after publication.
SEELEY DNA PROJECT UPDATE
The objective of this test is to help determine how
close a relationship there is between Nathaniel (1627-
1675) son of Robert and Obadiah Seeley (cr. 1614-
1657). Previous research hasn't proven a direct relationship
between the two. Males who can trace their
ancestry back to a son of Nathaniel or Obadiah are
potential donors. The sample kit is a simple swab that
is used to take a sample from the inside of the mouth
and then sent to the lab. As reported in previous
newsletters, there have been several samples sent
to the lab already. Some test results have been received
from the lab, however not enough to make a
determination.
We still do not have donors for the following lines:
On the Nathaniel line we don't have donors for
Robert #6 and Joseph #8.
On the Obadiah line we still don't have a donor for
Cornelius # 18.
Nov. 29, 1948
This was in what was St. Catherine of Siena Cemetery, which has been greatly vandalized.
