Book: “Hoist A Cold One!”
continued from front page
purchased the bar from the
Hiltons after a fire destroyed most
of the hotelier’s store and saloon.
Arduously moved to its current
location, the grill behind this beautifully
carved bar was the birthplace
of the famous, award-winning
Green Chile OwlBurger, created
by Frank Chavez. Beloved
by many, its recipe has remained
the same since 1948.
“Hoist a Cold One!” outlines
the long ownership history of
“The Cap” (now owned by
JoAnna and Earl DeBrine),
woven with stories of well-known
characters who have placed their
elbows on the oak bar: legendary
lawman and gunman Elfego
Baca, the scientists who worked on
the atomic bomb at Trinity Site,
and Nichele Nichols of Star Trek
fame, to name a few. Grove shares
that The Capitol Bar was called
The Green Front during
Prohibition, during which time it
operated as a speakeasy and pool
hall, with 25 cent moonshine available
to patrons. It became the first
legal bar operating in Socorro
after Prohibition and remains a
popular hangout for a wide variety
of patrons today.
Complete with driving directions
and local facts, “Hoist a
Cold One!: Historic Bars of the
Southwest” is an engaging
read for locals and non-locals,
alike. It’s available online through
Amazon, locally at The
Marketplace in Magdalena,
Harold’s Southwest Gifts in
Socorro, and at both The Cap
and The Owl.
Oktoberfest: “the beer that made Socorro famous.”
continued from front page
Sponsored by the Socorro
County Historical Society, the
annual get-together features your
choice of a bratwurst and sauerkraut
or barbecued beef plate and
cold beverage, a baked sale and
musical entertainment.
The Socorro Old Car Club
will display some of their vintage
cars on 6th Street in the Rancher’s
Steakhouse parking lot, just a few
hundred yards north of the museum.
As per tradition, society president
Bob Eveleth will serve as
honorary brewmeister with George
Killian Red on tap.
Tickets are $11 with all proceeds
to benefit the museum, also
home to the Socorro Train Gang.
Oktoberfest began in Munich,
Germany, for families and friends
to celebrate the autumn harvest,
the year’s first brew, and simply
put – have fun. It is not known
when the first Oktoberfest was
held in Socorro, but probably in
1882, the year that German
brewmeister Jakob Hammel and
his family arrived to start his
famous brewery. By the 1900s,
there were several German families
living in Socorro, such as the
Hammels, Eppeles, Spurgeons
and Zimmerlys. Oktoberfest celebrates
the Hammel Brewery and
one of Socorro’s early industries
with traditional foods and drink,
live music, baked goods, arts and
crafts, and tours of the brewery.
The Hammel Brewery has
deep German roots. In 1848, two
friends immigrated from Bavaria
to establish German breweries.
They were Eberhard Anheuser
and Jakob Hammel. By 1860,
Hammel owned the Illinois
Brewing Company, while his
friend owned the very successful
E. Anheuser & Company (now
the Anheuser-Busch Co.). For
health reasons, Hammel’s son,
William, moved to Socorro,
N.M., and established a branch of
the Illinois Brewing Co. in 1882.
Later called the Hammel
Brewery, it quickly became famous
throughout New Mexico. Packed
in ice and shipped by train and
wagons, Socorro’s lager beers were
delivered and served cold throughout
the state – a real novelty at the
time. William Hammel, and
German brewmeister Francis
Eppele, employed numerous
Socorroans to brew and bottle “the
beer that made Socorro famous.”
Unfortunately, the legacy of
Socorro’s German brews came to
an end in 1919 with the 18th
Amendment — the Prohibition
Act — requiring the dismantling
of all breweries.
Today, Frances Senn, a longstanding
board member of the
Socorro County Historical
Society, is the granddaughter of
famous brewmeister Francis
Eppele.
After Prohibition, Clarence
Hammel continued the business
and bottled Pepsi-Cola, Dr.
Pepper and Grapette, in addition
to operating the ice plant. The
Hammel Brewery building is now
the Historical Society’s museum,
home to the Socorro Train Gang
and, of course, Oktoberfest.
Whether you have an ounce of
German blood in your veins or
not, Oktoberfest is fun for all.
