Socorrofest boasts
stellar music line up
The 10th annual SocorroFest begins the
evening of Friday, Oct. 7, and continues all
day Saturday, Oct. 8, on Socorro’s historic
plaza. Ever since its beginnings in 2003 the
end of summer community event has been a
celebration of all things festive, from harmonic
bands and a harmonica contest to
micro-brewed beer and wine and foods of all
flavors.
Festivities get under way with a street
dance Friday night starting at 6 p.m.
Austin-based band, Mingo Fishtrap
kicks it off at 6 p.m. Mingo Fishtrap is a soul
and funk band formed in the mid-1990s in
Denton, Texas, playing original funky New
Orleans beats with four horns. Mingo
Fishtrap also performs Saturday night.
Rounding out the music Friday night is
Red Wind, who hits the stage at 8 p.m.
Formed in Albuquerque in 1982, they
recently appeared at Isleta Casino Resort
with Paul Revere and the Raiders and
Herman’s Hermits. They’ve also performed
with Ruben Ramos, Malo, and the late
Selena.
Day two of Socorrofest begins with
Socorro’s Farmer’s Market at 7:30 a.m. featuring
the best of fresh produce available in
the county.
Live music gets underway at noon
Saturday on three stages - the Plaza’s gazebo,
City Hall parking lot, and Capitol Bar -
spotlighting a spectacular lineup, including
Albuquerque’s Soul Kitchen.
Guitar hero Chris Dracup and vibrant
vocalist Hillary Smith are the driving force
for Soul Kitchen, named Albuquerque’s
“Best Blues Group” in 2010.
Felix y los Gatos have a reputation as the
ultimate New Mexico party band with highly
talented musicians playing an original style
of music called “zydejano,” influenced by
the rich culture of the state.
Twenty-four year old Albuquerque rock
guitarist Ryan McGarvey has already made
a name for himself as the winner of last
year’s “Ernie Ball ‘Play Crossroads’ contest,”
which earned him a berth at the Eric
Clapton Crossroads Guitar Festival in June
of 2011. His band is heading for a
European tour this fall and a new CD is on
the way. Socorrofest is a chance to see Ryan
perform in Socorro for free.
Rounding out the day’s entertainment,
Socorro’s hometown musicians are among
the finest bands of their genre, from Doug
Figgs and the Cowboy Way, Last Minute
Bluegrass, ‘Roon, the Rob Lopez
Experience, Tom Hunt and a half-dozen
others.
One music event centers on musicians
playing one instrument, the harmonica.
There’ll be plenty of hot air blowing
around at the Fourth Annual SocorroFest
Harmonica Contest starting at 1 p.m. on the
City Hall stage, hosted by Bobby Olguin of
the Buckhorn Tavern,” said Jennifer
Gonzales, Tourism Director for the City of
Socorro.
The entry fee for harp players of all abilities
is $25, with no fee for enjoying what has
become a hallmark SocorroFest attraction,
plus cash prizes for the winners.
