Chronic stress increases the adrenal output of
glucocorticoids, including cortisol. Chronic stress
and excess cortisol levels can lead to alterations
in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA)
axis, leading to: (1) neurotransmitter imbalances,
especially serotonin and dopamine, (2) imbalances
in glucose and insulin levels, (3) reduced levels
and activity of thyroid hormones, (4) impaired
immunity, (5) imbalances in sex hormones, and (6)
increases in catecholamines.

With elevations in cortisol, serotonin levels drop,
leading to mood changes and nervousness. As
serotonin goes down, sleep patterns are altered.
The shift in sleep and serotonin levels can lead to
chronic craving for comfort foods, usually foods that
are high in carbohydrates and sugars (like chocolate,
chips, and ice cream). Thyroid hormone levels also
can become imbalanced, reducing energy levels
and slowing metabolism. Thyroid hormones help
regulate insulin and also signal the liver to increase
the breakdown of cholesterol. When thyroid
hormones are low, carbohydrates and fats are stored
as body fat.
