Preparatory School - feedback
2010 at a glance, from the PA
2010 was the most exciting year in recent history, with the FIFA World
Cup held in our own back yard. The hype was electric, culminating in the
complete collection of full size flags, being draped over the fencing at the
school entrance, for weeks prior to the tournament.
We staged our own “mini football world cup” tournament in May and the
support from parents and friends was overwhelming. The event was so
successful, similar events are to become annual, with 2011 seeing a “mini
cricket world cup” tournament being held at the Prep School.
Despite the economic climate fund raising events were well supported.
Mr. Thomas’s wish-list was fulfilled, with additional items added on during
the course of the year. In excess of R450k was raised at the various
fundraising events and the money well spent.

Some of these items were purchased from funds raised late 2009.
As the funds raised from “My School Card” and “1-2-3Club” are accumulated
from the entire school, the funds are utilized in projects that have a mutual
benefit to all, or those that are out of reach for the individual sector within
the school.
Two years ago some of these funds at the time, were used in the paving
of the road at the Prep football fields.
In 2010 the following projects were funded from these 2 projects:

Irrigation System (Pre school) R40K

Other joint projects will be identified during 2011.
The “My School Card” program, held a competition prior to the FIFA world
cup but regrettably this proved rather disappointing and we lost an
opportunity to win R100000.00 for our school. The upside of the program
however is that our monthly receipts have since increased. We need to
get everyone “swiping”.
Once again the Amazing Race was great success, thanks to Louise and
her hard working team. New stalls, rides and activities were introduced,
making the event bigger and better that prior years. 2010 also saw the
introduction of the College Fun Run on the same day.
SMART Board interactive whiteboard
The SMART Board interactive whiteboard is a touch-sensitive display that
connects to your computer and digital projector. Using a finger, you can
control computer applications, write notes, pull up charts and images, search
the Internet, play videos and save your work.
The latest models come with our Touch Recognition feature, which allows
you to switch modes automatically. You can write with a pen, erase with
your palm and move objects with your finger without having to access other
tools, buttons or on-screen menus.
The SMART Board interactive whiteboard has the flexibility to engage all
learning styles.
• Visual learners can easily see colorful, movable images and diagrams
that the interactive whiteboard displays, even from the back of the
classroom
• Kinesthetic learners can interact and explore by moving letters, numbers,
Recipe book sales continue, together with the “buy a brick” campaign,
and the supporters clothing was re-introduced during the year. The cake
and candy proceeds were used in the abovementioned guide dog program
and the golf day, held at Benoni Country Club, was another successful
event. The “Garden Bulb” project was also well supported.
Class Moms, are an invaluable asset within the P.A. and this year was
no exception. Thanks go to Des Nienaber for all her work.
The Tuck Shop, controlled by Louise, and efficiently run by the hard
working “Tuck Shop Moms” ensured our children were well looked after
during break times. A special thank you to every “Tuck Shop Mom”
whose efforts and sacrifice of personal time is greatly appreciated .
The St Dunstan’s Conservancy is in the process of securing a donation
from Rand Water Board for the purchase of trees.
The dedication and support of the 2010 P.A. has been exceptional.
Thanks go to, Jill Greenslade (Vice Chairperson), Jill Dial, Andre Oosthuizen,
Louise Frandsen, Debbie Thompson, Graham Wrensch, Therese Schmidt,
Marzia Jonker and ALL the other hard working members.

Kitchen tips from Katie
• Always add 1-2 teaspoons of sugar when cooking with tomatoes.
• Never have the presence of fat or egg yolk when beating egg whites. The egg white will not foam.
• Cover breadboards or chopping boards with tinfoil to use as serving dishes or platters.
• Lemon juice is a delicious substitute for vinegar, especially in salads.
• Lemon juice is an antioxidant and will prevent bananas, avocadoes and apples from discolouring
• Rub half an onion over a hot braai griddle before putting meat onto the braai.
• Garnishing savoury dishes can be done with the use of parsley, fennel, chopped chives, coriander leaves or basil.
• Skin tomatoes by plunging them into boiling water for 20 minutes and then into iced water.
• Parsley can be chopped easily when placed in a cup and chopped up with sissors.
• When making banana bread or loaf, use bananas that are going black or are black.
They are much sweeter and will give the loaf a lovely flavour.

1 x 440g can Tomato soup
1 big pan of Boiling water

4 (or more) Rashers of bacon
1 cup Grated cheese
1 Onion, peeled and chopped
Bacon and Marrow Pasta Saute all of the above together (except pasta) until cooked.
Tuna Pasta Bake
Macaroni Bake
Tuna Lasanga
Mix into cooked pasta of your choice.
Beat egg in a cup and stir into mix.
Cook onion and tomatoes until in a paste.
Mix together all the rest of the ingredients.
Add into a baking dish.
Cover with grated cheddar cheese.
Bake at 180 o C for 25 ñ 30 minutes.
Gently drop macaroni into the pot of boiling water.
Keep it boiling well for 8 minutes.
Drain well. Put it into an 8 cup casserole.
Chop bacon. Fry gently with onion until cooked.
Drain it. Stir it into the casserole.
Stir in soup, milk and the grated cheese.
Bake it at 190oC (375oF) for 45 minutes.
Serve hot, with a tossed salad and French bread.

1 Onion, chopped
Fry the onion and garlic in 50g butter.
125ml Cold water
Stir in the tomato soup and 10ml maizena, dissolved in 125ml cold water.

Add the parsley and mixed herbs.

Fry the onion in the butter and when the onion is glazed, add the sliced mushrooms.

College - feedback
College PA Chairperson’s 2010 Report - Colleen Bekker
2010 was an exciting year in the life of the College PA. We welcomed
Alan Thompson as the new Rector. We organised various functions.
These being Mr & Miss St Dunstan’s, a Golf Day organised on the PA’s
behalf by Malcolm Winn, and the Fun Run at the Amazing Race. We also
did the catering and ran the bar at various functions. And we even
managed to raise more funds than usual.
The College PA has continued to develop good relationships with both
the Pre and Prep PA’s this year. Thanks must go to the members of all
3 PA’s for ‘seeing the big picture’.
On the topic of all 3 PA’s, the combined funds which come from My School
and 1-2-3 Club have been put to good use this year. The combined funds
have been used for the seating at the Don Jones Oval, the purchase of
a skull for the rowing club, an electronic timer for the galas, irrigation at
the Pre-school, and hand-held cricket scorers. We are in the process of
installing drop down blinds at the Prep Pavilion. This will enable us to
increase the amount of space we will have to host indoor functions.
Firstly I would like to thank all the PA members, for their hard work and
dedication throughout the year, without them all our successful functions
would not have been possible.
Then an even a bigger thank you to all the Pre-School Parents for always
digging deep into their pockets, to help us raise funds for our school.
Without your generosity we would not afford to supply our children with
such great play equipment.
The following functions were held during 2010:

(we donated 2 big boxes of Easter eggs to Benoni Child Welfare)
• Dinner and Dance
• Mothers Day Raffle (Nadine Abbott was the lucky winner)

making the shirts for the exciting Soccer world cup.)

• Father’s Day raffle

Moving on to the “thank you’s”...and I hope that I don’t leave any one out:
Thanks to all the families who have supported and helped the PA during
2010.
Thanks to all the PA members who have given of their time and support
as well.
I would like to thank Alan Lachenicht for his support during the first term
of 2010. We also need to say a special thanks to Joy Cousins and Sharon
Campbell in the office for all you support and help always.
To Alan Thompson...it has been great having you at the PA meetings
every month. We thank you for all you have done in your short time at St
Dunstan’s. Your vision, energy and enthusiasm is fantastic.

Pre-School PA Chaiperson’s 2010 Report - Stacey White
We bid farewell to quite a number of PA members this year. To all of
those leaving, I really want to thank you all so much for your support over
the years.
I do need to say special thanks to Gavin Barber, our treasurer, who leaves
us after 5 years.
Eric Bruggeman also needs thanks for all his support on the Prep and
College PA’s. Eric always organised the routes and judging for our Car
Rallies.
An extra special thanks to Tom Power and Karen Pitts who leave the PA
after having served on all 3 PA’s for 12 and 11 years respectively. Tom
and Karen your loyalty, support and love for St Dunstan’s has been really
awesome. We will miss you both - Tom for always running a bar whenever
it was required and being the last one to leave and Karen for being the
secretary and doing all the admin things (of which I must say you are so
good at).
Looking forward to 2011 with the introduction of the PA levy, our focus
will be on building the St Dunstan’s family and sense of community which
is such a strong and important part of St Dunstan’s. I have been involved
since 1994 and for me this sense of caring, along with the school motto
of ‘I Serve’; makes this school such a special place. I am so grateful to
have been able to send my children to this school and we as a family are
really proud to belong to this combined family.
Lastly I need to mention that we need your support - we need Mom’s or
Dad’s to help in the tuckshop. We need help with catering and functions
- these being both general school functions like sports, cultural, valedictory
etc. We will be sending out a notice where you will be able to indicate
where you would like to get involved.

R79 000 last year.

2011. All are welcome. Our school can only be successful
with enthusiastic, positive-minded and willing parents.
We looking forward to a successful and exciting 2011 with all.
