projects. It has published 88 papers on various subjects and a book ‘Bamboos at TBGRI’. 14 rare endemic tree species were<br />
added to arboretum and 19 palms to palmetum. A programme for greening state highway was initiated. A virtual herbarium<br />
database application package was developed for digitalizing TBGRI herbarium. A comprehensive account on the current<br />
status <strong>of</strong> the flowering plants <strong>of</strong> the Western Ghats was successfully completed.<br />
<strong>Kerala</strong> School <strong>of</strong> Mathematics (KSOM):<br />
7.173 The <strong>Kerala</strong> School <strong>of</strong> Mathematics has been setup at Kozhikode as a joint venture <strong>of</strong> KSCSTE and National <strong>Board</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
Higher Mathematics (NBHM), under the Department <strong>of</strong> Atomic Energy, <strong>Government</strong> <strong>of</strong> India. The main objective <strong>of</strong> the institute<br />
is to promote Mathematical research in the country and particularly in <strong>Kerala</strong>. During 2011, 5 seminars and 4 colloquium<br />
and 2 international seminars were conducted.<br />
The Grant-in-aid Institutions<br />
7.174 The Grant-in-aid Institutions <strong>of</strong> the KSCSTE viz. Sophisticated Test and Instrumentation Centre (STIC), Malabar Botanic<br />
Garden Society (MBGS), Integrated Rural Technology Centre (IRTC) have carried out various activities in their respective<br />
fields.<br />
7.175 Apart from the above activities , the Council has also organized A high-level meeting on Centre-<strong>State</strong> Technology<br />
Partnership jointly with the Department <strong>of</strong> Science <strong>of</strong> Science and Technology (DST), <strong>Government</strong> <strong>of</strong> India on November 6,<br />
2010. More than 70 senior <strong>of</strong>ficials, scientists and activists <strong>of</strong> the Central and <strong>State</strong> <strong>Government</strong>s and governmental and<br />
non-governmental institutions attended the meeting. A panel consisting <strong>of</strong> eminent persons placed the user perspective on<br />
current state <strong>of</strong> technologies and technology application in the state as well as the future demands in various sectors<br />
7.176 The 23rd <strong>Kerala</strong> Science Congress was organised at CESS during 29 to 31 January 2011. The theme <strong>of</strong> the Congress<br />
was “Science and technology for transforming <strong>Kerala</strong> as a green economy”.<br />
7.177 Recognising the role <strong>of</strong> KSCSTE/ CESS in dealing with coastal zone management issues, MoEF has identified CESS<br />
as the nodal organization for the preparation <strong>of</strong> the World Bank funded Integrated Coastal Zone Management Project.<br />
Regional Cancer Centre, Thiruvananthapuram<br />
7.178 Regional Cancer Centre, Thiruvananthapuram (RCC), is an autonomous scientific institution sponsored jointly by<br />
the <strong>Government</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Kerala</strong> and the <strong>Government</strong> <strong>of</strong> India. The centre was established in the year 1980 as a tertiary referral<br />
centre for the diagnosis and treatment <strong>of</strong> cancer. RCC rated amongst the top three <strong>of</strong> the 28 Regional Cancer Centres in the<br />
country. It is the only comprehensive, dedicated centre for diagnosis, treatment and control <strong>of</strong> cancer in <strong>Kerala</strong>. In average<br />
32,000 new patients occur every year in the state and out <strong>of</strong> this more than one third comes to RCC for treatment.<br />
