Carrying<br />
the burden <strong>of</strong><br />
history<br />

At the threshold <strong>of</strong> death<br />
—<br />
her voice is empty<br />
her body rages at the soundlessness<br />
instincts <strong>of</strong> self-preservation tether her to silence<br />
safeguard her continued existence that leaves her<br />
intact from the recurring insult <strong>of</strong> death<br />
staving <strong>of</strong>f the raw crashing collapse <strong>of</strong> a spirit sometimes triggered<br />
from long—spaced—breaths<br />
and the stillness <strong>of</strong> a heart<br />
she holds the wall strong<br />
subdues her vulnerabilities<br />
holds sway to her fragilities<br />
remaining stoically unrufed<br />
casting out a false sense <strong>of</strong> indifference<br />
as though death were mundane<br />
struggling to stay faithful to her senses she feels the tensions<br />
grip her soul with vitality so potent<br />
still,<br />
the subtleties <strong>of</strong> a tradition overcome her<br />
carrying the burden <strong>of</strong> history<br />
bearing the sway <strong>of</strong> tradition<br />
curbing the visceral re-ex<br />
certain not to lower the mask<br />
