The second-annual Del Mar Paddock Sale, featuring race-ready racehorses
meant to spring right into action at the seaside track’s summer meet,
will be held Sunday, July 21 following the day’s last race.
The event, which proved popular with buyers and racing fans alike
last year, hopes to offer approximately 40 out-of-state runners for sale
in the track’s picturesque paddock. Barretts Sales and Racing conducted
the 2012 vendue and again will oversee this
year’s edition.
The idea behind the sale was to bring fresh
stock – and encourage new ownership – for the
California racing scene. In that regard, the sale
was a solid success. The 25 horses who finally
sold at the session made 36 subsequent starts
at Del Mar and more than 100 total outings in
California by the end of the year. Two of the
buys – Nechez Dawn and I Dazzle – even went
on to become stakes winners in the state.
An extra attraction for sale participants is
the fact that the horses are eligible immediately
for Del Mar’s popular “Ship and Win” program, which rewards all
out-of-state runners making their first start at the track with an automatic
$1,000 check and an additional purse-money-won boost that has risen to
33 1/3% this year.
For the 51 years between 1954 and 2004, Del Mar’s race meeting was
a lure for a much-anticipated yearling sale. The race-ready racehorse sale
was a first last year, however, with its emphasis
on “runners now” instead of future stars.
The sale is open to all interested parties,
both as buyers and sellers. Potential buyers
are encouraged to contact the Thoroughbred

The “race-ready racehorse sale” in Del
Mar’s paddock in 2012 drew an interesting
mix of serious buyers and looky-loos.
