What the Bible Says<br />

Balak Summons Balaam<br />

Numbers 22:1 Then the Israelites traveled to the pla<strong>in</strong>s <strong>of</strong> Moab <strong>an</strong>d camped along the<br />

Jord<strong>an</strong> across from Jericho. 2 Now Balak son <strong>of</strong> Zippor saw all that Israel had done to<br />

the Amorites, 3 <strong>an</strong>d Moab was terrified because there were so m<strong>an</strong>y people. Indeed,<br />

Moab was filled with dread because <strong>of</strong> the Israelites. 4 The Moabites said to the elders<br />

<strong>of</strong> Midi<strong>an</strong>, "Th<strong>is</strong> horde <strong>is</strong> go<strong>in</strong>g to lick up everyth<strong>in</strong>g around us, as <strong>an</strong> ox licks up the<br />

grass <strong>of</strong> the field." So Balak son <strong>of</strong> Zippor, who was k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> Moab at that time, 5 sent<br />

messengers to summon Balaam son <strong>of</strong> Beor, who was at Pethor, near the River, <strong>in</strong> h<strong>is</strong><br />

native l<strong>an</strong>d. Balak said: "A people has come out <strong>of</strong> Egypt; they cover the face <strong>of</strong> the<br />

l<strong>an</strong>d <strong>an</strong>d have settled next to me. 6 Now come <strong>an</strong>d put a curse on these people,<br />

because they are too powerful for me. Perhaps then I will be able to defeat them <strong>an</strong>d<br />

drive them out <strong>of</strong> the country. For I know that those you bless are blessed, <strong>an</strong>d those<br />

you curse are cursed." 7 The elders <strong>of</strong> Moab <strong>an</strong>d Midi<strong>an</strong> left, tak<strong>in</strong>g with them the fee<br />

for div<strong>in</strong>ation. When they came to Balaam, they told him what Balak had said. 8 "Spend<br />

the night here," Balaam said to them, "<strong>an</strong>d I will br<strong>in</strong>g you back the <strong>an</strong>swer the LORD<br />

gives me." So the Moabite pr<strong>in</strong>ces stayed with him. 9 God came to Balaam <strong>an</strong>d asked,<br />

"Who are these men with you" 10 Balaam said to God, "Balak son <strong>of</strong> Zippor, k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong><br />

Moab, sent me th<strong>is</strong> message: 11 'A people that has come out <strong>of</strong> Egypt covers the face<br />

<strong>of</strong> the l<strong>an</strong>d. Now come <strong>an</strong>d put a curse on them for me. Perhaps then I will be able to<br />

fight them <strong>an</strong>d drive them away.' " 12 But God said to Balaam, "Do not go with them.<br />

You must not put a curse on those people, because they are blessed."<br />

Defeat <strong>of</strong> Sihon <strong>an</strong>d Og<br />

Numbers 21:21 Israel sent messengers to say to Sihon k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> the Amorites: 22 "Let<br />

us pass through your country. We will not turn aside <strong>in</strong>to <strong>an</strong>y field or v<strong>in</strong>eyard, or dr<strong>in</strong>k

water from <strong>an</strong>y well. We will travel along the k<strong>in</strong>g's highway until we have passed<br />

through your territory." 23 But Sihon would not let Israel pass through h<strong>is</strong> territory. He<br />

mustered h<strong>is</strong> entire army <strong>an</strong>d marched out <strong>in</strong>to the desert aga<strong>in</strong>st Israel. When he<br />

reached Jahaz, he fought with Israel. 24 Israel, however, put him to the sword <strong>an</strong>d took<br />

over h<strong>is</strong> l<strong>an</strong>d from the Arnon to the Jabbok, but only as far as the Ammonites, because<br />

their border was fortified. 25 Israel captured all the cities <strong>of</strong> the Amorites <strong>an</strong>d occupied<br />

them, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Heshbon <strong>an</strong>d all its surround<strong>in</strong>g settlements. 26 Heshbon was the city<br />

<strong>of</strong> Sihon k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> the Amorites, who had fought aga<strong>in</strong>st the former k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> Moab <strong>an</strong>d had<br />

taken from him all h<strong>is</strong> l<strong>an</strong>d as far as the Arnon. 27 That <strong>is</strong> why the poets say: "Come to<br />

Heshbon <strong>an</strong>d let it be rebuilt; let Sihon's city be restored. 28 "Fire went out from<br />

Heshbon, a blaze from the city <strong>of</strong> Sihon. It consumed Ar <strong>of</strong> Moab, the citizens <strong>of</strong><br />

Arnon's heights. 29 Woe to you, O Moab! You are destroyed, O people <strong>of</strong> Chemosh!<br />

He has given up h<strong>is</strong> sons as fugitives <strong>an</strong>d h<strong>is</strong> daughters as captives to Sihon k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong><br />

the Amorites. 30 "But we have overthrown them; Heshbon <strong>is</strong> destroyed all the way to<br />

Dibon. We have demol<strong>is</strong>hed them as far as Nophah, which extends to Medeba." 31 So<br />

Israel settled <strong>in</strong> the l<strong>an</strong>d <strong>of</strong> the Amorites. Psalm 78:43 the day he d<strong>is</strong>played h<strong>is</strong><br />

miraculous signs <strong>in</strong> Egypt, h<strong>is</strong> wonders <strong>in</strong> the region <strong>of</strong> Zo<strong>an</strong>. 44 He turned their rivers<br />

to blood; they could not dr<strong>in</strong>k from their streams. 45 He sent swarms <strong>of</strong> flies that<br />

devoured them, <strong>an</strong>d frogs that devastated them. 46 He gave their crops to the<br />

grasshopper, their produce to the locust. 47 He destroyed their v<strong>in</strong>es with hail <strong>an</strong>d their<br />

sycamore-figs with sleet. 48 He gave over their cattle to the hail, their livestock to bolts<br />

<strong>of</strong> lightn<strong>in</strong>g. 49 He unleashed aga<strong>in</strong>st them h<strong>is</strong> hot <strong>an</strong>ger, h<strong>is</strong> wrath, <strong>in</strong>dignation <strong>an</strong>d<br />

hostility-- a b<strong>an</strong>d <strong>of</strong> destroy<strong>in</strong>g <strong>an</strong>gels. 50 He prepared a path for h<strong>is</strong> <strong>an</strong>ger; he did not<br />

spare them from death but gave them over to the plague. 51 He struck down all the<br />

firstborn <strong>of</strong> Egypt, the firstfruits <strong>of</strong> m<strong>an</strong>hood <strong>in</strong> the tents <strong>of</strong> Ham. 52 But he brought h<strong>is</strong><br />

people out like a flock; he led them like sheep through the desert. 53 He guided them<br />

safely, so they were unafraid; but the sea engulfed their enemies. 54 Thus he brought<br />

them to the border <strong>of</strong> h<strong>is</strong> holy l<strong>an</strong>d, to the hill country h<strong>is</strong> right h<strong>an</strong>d had taken. 55 He<br />

drove out nations before them <strong>an</strong>d allotted their l<strong>an</strong>ds to them as <strong>an</strong> <strong>in</strong>herit<strong>an</strong>ce; he<br />

settled the tribes <strong>of</strong> Israel <strong>in</strong> their homes.<br />

Numbers 22:22 But God was very <strong>an</strong>gry when he went, <strong>an</strong>d the <strong>an</strong>gel <strong>of</strong> the LORD<br />

stood <strong>in</strong> the road to oppose him. Balaam was rid<strong>in</strong>g on h<strong>is</strong> donkey, <strong>an</strong>d h<strong>is</strong> two<br />

serv<strong>an</strong>ts were with him. 23 When the donkey saw the <strong>an</strong>gel <strong>of</strong> the LORD st<strong>an</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

the road with a drawn sword <strong>in</strong> h<strong>is</strong> h<strong>an</strong>d, she turned <strong>of</strong>f the road <strong>in</strong>to a field. Balaam<br />

beat her to get her back on the road. 24 Then the <strong>an</strong>gel <strong>of</strong> the LORD stood <strong>in</strong> a narrow<br />

path between two v<strong>in</strong>eyards, with walls on both sides. 25 When the donkey saw the<br />

<strong>an</strong>gel <strong>of</strong> the LORD, she pressed close to the wall, crush<strong>in</strong>g Balaam's foot aga<strong>in</strong>st it. So

he beat her aga<strong>in</strong>. 26 Then the <strong>an</strong>gel <strong>of</strong> the LORD moved on ahead <strong>an</strong>d stood <strong>in</strong> a<br />

narrow place where there was no room to turn, either to the right or to the left. 27 When<br />

the donkey saw the <strong>an</strong>gel <strong>of</strong> the LORD, she lay down under Balaam, <strong>an</strong>d he was <strong>an</strong>gry<br />

<strong>an</strong>d beat her with h<strong>is</strong> staff. 28 Then the LORD opened the donkey's mouth, <strong>an</strong>d she<br />

said to Balaam, "What have I done to you to make you beat me these three <strong>times</strong>" 29<br />

Balaam <strong>an</strong>swered the donkey, "You have made a fool <strong>of</strong> me! If I had a sword <strong>in</strong> my<br />

h<strong>an</strong>d, I would kill you right now." 30 The donkey said to Balaam, "Am I not your own<br />

donkey, which you have always ridden, to th<strong>is</strong> day Have I been <strong>in</strong> the habit <strong>of</strong> do<strong>in</strong>g<br />

th<strong>is</strong> to you" "No," he said. 31 Then the LORD opened Balaam's eyes, <strong>an</strong>d he saw the<br />

<strong>an</strong>gel <strong>of</strong> the LORD st<strong>an</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the road with h<strong>is</strong> sword drawn. So he bowed low <strong>an</strong>d fell<br />

facedown. 32 The <strong>an</strong>gel <strong>of</strong> the LORD asked him, "Why have you beaten your donkey<br />

these three <strong>times</strong> I have come here to oppose you because your path <strong>is</strong> a reckless<br />

one before me. 33 The donkey saw me <strong>an</strong>d turned away from me these three <strong>times</strong>. If<br />

she had not turned away, I would certa<strong>in</strong>ly have killed you by now, but I would have<br />

spared her." 34 Balaam said to the <strong>an</strong>gel <strong>of</strong> the LORD, "I have s<strong>in</strong>ned. I did not realize<br />

you were st<strong>an</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the road to oppose me. Now if you are d<strong>is</strong>pleased, I will go back."<br />

35 The <strong>an</strong>gel <strong>of</strong> the LORD said to Balaam, "Go with the men, but speak only what I tell<br />

you." So Balaam went with the pr<strong>in</strong>ces <strong>of</strong> Balak.<br />

Numbers 23:16 The LORD met with Balaam <strong>an</strong>d put a message <strong>in</strong> h<strong>is</strong> mouth <strong>an</strong>d said,<br />

"Go back to Balak <strong>an</strong>d give him th<strong>is</strong> message." 17 So he went to him <strong>an</strong>d found him<br />

st<strong>an</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g beside h<strong>is</strong> <strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>g, with the pr<strong>in</strong>ces <strong>of</strong> Moab. Balak asked him, "What did the<br />

LORD say" 18 Then he uttered h<strong>is</strong> oracle: "Ar<strong>is</strong>e, Balak, <strong>an</strong>d l<strong>is</strong>ten; hear me, son <strong>of</strong><br />

Zippor. 19 God <strong>is</strong> not a m<strong>an</strong>, that he should lie, nor a son <strong>of</strong> m<strong>an</strong>, that he should<br />

ch<strong>an</strong>ge h<strong>is</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d. Does he speak <strong>an</strong>d then not act Does he prom<strong>is</strong>e <strong>an</strong>d not fulfill 20 I<br />

have received a comm<strong>an</strong>d to bless; he has blessed, <strong>an</strong>d I c<strong>an</strong>not ch<strong>an</strong>ge it. 21 "No<br />

m<strong>is</strong>fortune <strong>is</strong> seen <strong>in</strong> Jacob, no m<strong>is</strong>ery observed <strong>in</strong> Israel. The LORD their God <strong>is</strong> with<br />

them; the shout <strong>of</strong> the K<strong>in</strong>g <strong>is</strong> among them. 22 God brought them out <strong>of</strong> Egypt; they<br />

have the strength <strong>of</strong> a wild ox. 23 There <strong>is</strong> no sorcery aga<strong>in</strong>st Jacob, no div<strong>in</strong>ation<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st Israel. It will now be said <strong>of</strong> Jacob <strong>an</strong>d <strong>of</strong> Israel, 'See what God has done!'<br />

Exodus 19:5 Now if you obey me fully <strong>an</strong>d keep my coven<strong>an</strong>t, then out <strong>of</strong> all nations<br />

you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth <strong>is</strong> m<strong>in</strong>e,<br />

Numbers 14:8 If the LORD <strong>is</strong> pleased with us, he will lead us <strong>in</strong>to that l<strong>an</strong>d, a l<strong>an</strong>d<br />

flow<strong>in</strong>g with milk <strong>an</strong>d honey, <strong>an</strong>d will give it to us. 9 Only do not rebel aga<strong>in</strong>st the<br />

LORD. And do not be afraid <strong>of</strong> the people <strong>of</strong> the l<strong>an</strong>d, because we will swallow them<br />

up. Their protection <strong>is</strong> gone, but the LORD <strong>is</strong> with us. Do not be afraid <strong>of</strong> them."

Joshua 24:9 When Balak son <strong>of</strong> Zippor, the k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> Moab, prepared to fight aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />

Israel, he sent for Balaam son <strong>of</strong> Beor to put a curse on you. 10 But I would not l<strong>is</strong>ten to<br />

Balaam, so he blessed you aga<strong>in</strong> <strong>an</strong>d aga<strong>in</strong>, <strong>an</strong>d I delivered you out <strong>of</strong> h<strong>is</strong> h<strong>an</strong>d.<br />

I sent it.<br />

Rom<strong>an</strong>s 15:4 For everyth<strong>in</strong>g that was written <strong>in</strong> the past was written to teach us, so<br />

that through endur<strong>an</strong>ce <strong>an</strong>d the encouragement <strong>of</strong> the Scriptures we might have hope.<br />

<strong>Life</strong> Lessons to Remember<br />

Hebrews 6:18 God did th<strong>is</strong> so that, by two unch<strong>an</strong>geable th<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> which it <strong>is</strong><br />

impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold <strong>of</strong> the hope <strong>of</strong>fered to us may<br />

be greatly encouraged. 19 We have th<strong>is</strong> hope as <strong>an</strong> <strong>an</strong>chor for the soul, firm <strong>an</strong>d<br />

secure. It enters the <strong>in</strong>ner s<strong>an</strong>ctuary beh<strong>in</strong>d the curta<strong>in</strong>, 20 where Jesus, who went<br />

before us, has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever, <strong>in</strong> the order<br />

Joshua 21:45 Not one <strong>of</strong> all the LORD's good prom<strong>is</strong>es to the house <strong>of</strong> Israel failed;<br />

every one was fulfilled..<br />

The LORD's Answer<br />

Habakkuk 2:2 Then the LORD replied: "Write down the revelation <strong>an</strong>d make it pla<strong>in</strong> on<br />

tablets so that a herald may run with it. 3 For the revelation awaits <strong>an</strong> appo<strong>in</strong>ted time; it<br />

speaks <strong>of</strong> the end <strong>an</strong>d will not prove false. Though it l<strong>in</strong>ger, wait for it; it will certa<strong>in</strong>ly<br />

come <strong>an</strong>d will not delay.
