Guidelines for the Preparation of a Master’s Thesis
(cf. examination regulations Biomedical Engineering § 10)
1. Topic of the Master’s Thesis
The topic of the master’s thesis can be given out by any professor, assistant professor
[§ 23 par. 1 no. 1 „Hochschulgesetz“(university law)], or any lecturer who is employed at the
Luebeck University of Applied Sciences or the University of Luebeck, as long as they are
involved in research or teaching in the field of medical technology.
The master’s candidate should be given the opportunity to suggest topics for the thesis.
2. Proposal and Approval of Master’s Thesis
The student must submit a proposal of the master’s thesis properly with the examination
committee of the individual program of study. The topic, author, supervisor, date of the start
of the thesis work, and the address of the author while working on the thesis should be filled
in on the form. The form is available in the secretary’s office, Sekretariat AN, or can be
downloaded from the homepage www.mt-master.com. A short summary of the topic of the
thesis should be included.
Only those students can be approved for writing their master’s theses who are in at least the
third semester, have all the credits of the first semester and at least 20 credits of the second
semester. Furthermore, the internship should be completed. All examinations should be
completed by the final oral examination.
The student will be informed in writing of whether when his application to the master’s thesis
program has been accepted and whether his topic has been approved.
3. Master’s Thesis Time Allowance
The normal time allowance given to complete the master’s thesis is 5 months. This period
begins with the notification of the acceptance to the master’s thesis program. Two bound
copies of the master’s thesis should be submitted to the office of the department of applied
natural sciences (Sekretariat des Fachbereiches Angewandte Naturwissenschaften).
Alternatively, the work can be mailed to the following address, postmarked no later than the
deadline:

The thesis will be stamped with the date of receipt which acts as the official record of the
time of submission.

4. Extension of the Deadline
In individual cases the examination committee can make an exception and extend the
deadline by a maximum of one month upon a well-founded request by the candidate.
5. Return of the Topic
The topic can only be returned once and only within the first two months of the time
allowance given. A new topic must be approved by submitting a new proposal.
6. Formatting the Master’s Thesis
The candidate should consult and reach an agreement with the supervisor concerning the
format of the thesis, e.g. the placement and layout of figures, photographs, graphs, type
specifications and the method of binding the work.
7. Documentation of Sources
Direct quotations or paraphrases should be identified as such. A footnote should be used for
the source citation, where a raised number in the text refers to a footnote on the same page.
Another system is citation by number, including the page number of the source, keyed to a
numbered reference list on a separate piece of paper attached to the end of the thesis.
8. Declaration for Master’s Thesis
When the thesis is submitted, the candidate should include the sheet on which he warrants
that the thesis is original work and that only the sources cited have been used and whether
he consents to his work being published or distributed. The declaration sheet is available in
the office of the department of applied natural sciences (Sekretariat des Fachbereiches
Angewandte Naturwissenschaften) or can be downloaded from the homepage www.mtmaster.com.
9. Summary of the Master’s Thesis
A summary of the thesis with a length of approx. one DIN A4 page should also be included
with the work. The summary should also be submitted on a data carrier in office of the
department of applied natural sciences (Sekretariat des Fachbereiches Angewandte
Naturwissenschaften). Even with theses with a restricted notice, a publishable summary
should be provided.
Students should create a draft of a poster (DIN A0 Format), which should be submitted in
electronic form on a data carrier.
10. Repeating the Master’s Thesis
A master’s thesis that has not passed can be repeated once. In order to do this a proposal of
a master’s thesis must be submitted. The proposal must take place in the next semester at
the latest.
11. Registration for Final Oral Examination
In order to register for the final oral examination the student must have fulfilled all the
obligations for the course of study and has completed a master’s thesis with a passing grade.

12. Format and Layout
The master’s thesis should be submitted bound with a reinforced front and back cover in size
DIN A4. A hardback binding (books) or spiral binding is possible. The following pages and
lists are essential to the work:
• Title page
• Summary
• Table of Contents
• Details of Sources
and additionally, if necessary:
• List of Figures
• List of Tables
The title page and the sheet for the summary are both available in the office of the
department of applied natural sciences (Sekretariat des Fachbereiches Angewandte
Naturwissenschaften) or can be downloaded from the homepage www.mt-master.com. Page
numbers must be shown in the thesis.
Documentation of Sources
• When a text is cited for the first time, the following information is necessary:
• First and last names of the author, main and secondary titles of the book, issue
number, place and date of publishing, volume number (if applicable), page number
• For periodicals the following should be included: First and last names of the author,
title of the article, usual abbreviation of the periodical, number and year, page
number.
• For information from the internet, the name of the institution or author of the text and
the complete link should be listed. The time of access (month and year) should also
be given.
General specifications for the layout are not set but this should be agreed upon with the
supervisor. Furthermore, it is possible to inspect earlier master’s theses, as long as they do
not have a restricted notice attached to them.
