<strong>Committee</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>program</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>biomedical</strong> <strong>engineering</strong><br />

Guidelines <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> Preparation <strong>of</strong> a <strong>Master</strong>’s Thesis<br />

(cf. examination regulations Biomedical Engineering § 10)<br />

1. Topic <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Master</strong>’s Thesis<br />

The topic <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> master’s <strong>the</strong>sis can be given out by any pr<strong>of</strong>essor, assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

[§ 23 par. 1 no. 1 „Hochschulgesetz“(university law)], or any lecturer who is employed at <strong>the</strong><br />

Luebeck University <strong>of</strong> Applied Sciences or <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Luebeck, as long as <strong>the</strong>y are<br />

involved in research or teaching in <strong>the</strong> field <strong>of</strong> medical technology.<br />

The master’s candidate should be given <strong>the</strong> opportunity to suggest topics <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>sis.<br />

2. Proposal and Approval <strong>of</strong> <strong>Master</strong>’s Thesis<br />

The student must submit a proposal <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> master’s <strong>the</strong>sis properly with <strong>the</strong> examination<br />

committee <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> individual <strong>program</strong> <strong>of</strong> study. The topic, author, supervisor, date <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> start<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>sis work, and <strong>the</strong> address <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> author while working on <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>sis should be filled<br />

in on <strong>the</strong> <strong>for</strong>m. The <strong>for</strong>m is available in <strong>the</strong> secretary’s <strong>of</strong>fice, Sekretariat AN, or can be<br />

downloaded from <strong>the</strong> homepage www.mt-master.com. A short summary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> topic <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>sis should be included.<br />

Only those students can be approved <strong>for</strong> writing <strong>the</strong>ir master’s <strong>the</strong>ses who are in at least <strong>the</strong><br />

third semester, have all <strong>the</strong> credits <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first semester and at least 20 credits <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> second<br />

semester. Fur<strong>the</strong>rmore, <strong>the</strong> internship should be completed. All examinations should be<br />

completed by <strong>the</strong> final oral examination.<br />

The student will be in<strong>for</strong>med in writing <strong>of</strong> whe<strong>the</strong>r when his application to <strong>the</strong> master’s <strong>the</strong>sis<br />

<strong>program</strong> has been accepted and whe<strong>the</strong>r his topic has been approved.<br />

3. <strong>Master</strong>’s Thesis Time Allowance<br />

The normal time allowance given to complete <strong>the</strong> master’s <strong>the</strong>sis is 5 months. This period<br />

begins with <strong>the</strong> notification <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> acceptance to <strong>the</strong> master’s <strong>the</strong>sis <strong>program</strong>. Two bound<br />

copies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> master’s <strong>the</strong>sis should be submitted to <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> department <strong>of</strong> applied<br />

natural sciences (Sekretariat des Fachbereiches Angewandte Naturwissenschaften).<br />

Alternatively, <strong>the</strong> work can be mailed to <strong>the</strong> following address, postmarked no later than <strong>the</strong><br />

deadline:<br />

The <strong>the</strong>sis will be stamped with <strong>the</strong> date <strong>of</strong> receipt which acts as <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficial record <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

time <strong>of</strong> submission.<br />

4. Extension <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Deadline<br />

In individual cases <strong>the</strong> examination committee can make an exception and extend <strong>the</strong><br />

deadline by a maximum <strong>of</strong> one month upon a well-founded request by <strong>the</strong> candidate.<br />

5. Return <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Topic<br />

The topic can only be returned once and only within <strong>the</strong> first two months <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> time<br />

allowance given. A new topic must be approved by submitting a new proposal.<br />

6. Formatting <strong>the</strong> <strong>Master</strong>’s Thesis<br />

The candidate should consult and reach an agreement with <strong>the</strong> supervisor concerning <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>for</strong>mat <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>sis, e.g. <strong>the</strong> placement and layout <strong>of</strong> figures, photographs, graphs, type<br />

specifications and <strong>the</strong> method <strong>of</strong> binding <strong>the</strong> work.<br />

7. Documentation <strong>of</strong> Sources<br />

Direct quotations or paraphrases should be identified as such. A footnote should be used <strong>for</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> source citation, where a raised number in <strong>the</strong> text refers to a footnote on <strong>the</strong> same page.<br />

Ano<strong>the</strong>r system is citation by number, including <strong>the</strong> page number <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> source, keyed to a<br />

numbered reference list on a separate piece <strong>of</strong> paper attached to <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>sis.<br />

8. Declaration <strong>for</strong> <strong>Master</strong>’s Thesis<br />

When <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>sis is submitted, <strong>the</strong> candidate should include <strong>the</strong> sheet on which he warrants<br />

that <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>sis is original work and that only <strong>the</strong> sources cited have been used and whe<strong>the</strong>r<br />

he consents to his work being published or distributed. The declaration sheet is available in<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> department <strong>of</strong> applied natural sciences (Sekretariat des Fachbereiches<br />

Angewandte Naturwissenschaften) or can be downloaded from <strong>the</strong> homepage www.mtmaster.com.<br />

9. Summary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Master</strong>’s Thesis<br />

A summary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>sis with a length <strong>of</strong> approx. one DIN A4 page should also be included<br />

with <strong>the</strong> work. The summary should also be submitted on a data carrier in <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

department <strong>of</strong> applied natural sciences (Sekretariat des Fachbereiches Angewandte<br />

Naturwissenschaften). Even with <strong>the</strong>ses with a restricted notice, a publishable summary<br />

should be provided.<br />

Students should create a draft <strong>of</strong> a poster (DIN A0 Format), which should be submitted in<br />

electronic <strong>for</strong>m on a data carrier.<br />

10. Repeating <strong>the</strong> <strong>Master</strong>’s Thesis<br />

A master’s <strong>the</strong>sis that has not passed can be repeated once. In order to do this a proposal <strong>of</strong><br />

a master’s <strong>the</strong>sis must be submitted. The proposal must take place in <strong>the</strong> next semester at<br />

<strong>the</strong> latest.<br />

11. Registration <strong>for</strong> Final Oral Examination<br />

In order to register <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> final oral examination <strong>the</strong> student must have fulfilled all <strong>the</strong><br />

obligations <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> course <strong>of</strong> study and has completed a master’s <strong>the</strong>sis with a passing grade.<br />

12. Format and Layout<br />

The master’s <strong>the</strong>sis should be submitted bound with a rein<strong>for</strong>ced front and back cover in size<br />

DIN A4. A hardback binding (books) or spiral binding is possible. The following pages and<br />

lists are essential to <strong>the</strong> work:<br />

• Title page<br />

• Summary<br />

• Table <strong>of</strong> Contents<br />

• Details <strong>of</strong> Sources<br />

and additionally, if necessary:<br />

• List <strong>of</strong> Figures<br />

• List <strong>of</strong> Tables<br />

The title page and <strong>the</strong> sheet <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> summary are both available in <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

department <strong>of</strong> applied natural sciences (Sekretariat des Fachbereiches Angewandte<br />

Naturwissenschaften) or can be downloaded from <strong>the</strong> homepage www.mt-master.com. Page<br />

numbers must be shown in <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>sis.<br />

Documentation <strong>of</strong> Sources<br />

• When a text is cited <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> first time, <strong>the</strong> following in<strong>for</strong>mation is necessary:<br />

• First and last names <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> author, main and secondary titles <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> book, issue<br />

number, place and date <strong>of</strong> publishing, volume number (if applicable), page number<br />

• For periodicals <strong>the</strong> following should be included: First and last names <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> author,<br />

title <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> article, usual abbreviation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> periodical, number and year, page<br />

number.<br />

• For in<strong>for</strong>mation from <strong>the</strong> internet, <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> institution or author <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> text and<br />

<strong>the</strong> complete link should be listed. The time <strong>of</strong> access (month and year) should also<br />

be given.<br />

General specifications <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> layout are not set but this should be agreed upon with <strong>the</strong><br />

supervisor. Fur<strong>the</strong>rmore, it is possible to inspect earlier master’s <strong>the</strong>ses, as long as <strong>the</strong>y do<br />

not have a restricted notice attached to <strong>the</strong>m.<br />
