Quarter. This is a progress<br />
report, not the final<br />
grade for 3 rd Quarter. This<br />
grade reflects work done up<br />
to and including February<br />
6 th . The Honor Roll,<br />
Principal’s Honor Roll<br />
and Perfect Attendance<br />
list for 1st Semester are<br />
included in this newsletter.<br />
Congratulations to all of<br />
the parents of students<br />
who are on the honor roll,<br />
the perfect attendance list<br />
or both! Your help and<br />
support are crucial.<br />
February is a busy month<br />
for the Middle <strong>School</strong>. Tutoring<br />
continues on Tuesday,<br />
Wednesday and<br />
Thursdays for grades 6-8<br />
from 2:30-3:30 PM. We<br />
hope all students will take<br />
advantage of this time for<br />
additional learning.<br />
MAP testing will begin<br />
the first week in May. We<br />
will complete the testing<br />
schedule and give you additional<br />
information in the<br />
March newsletter as well<br />
as on the website. The<br />
whole school will be testing.<br />
6 th <strong>Grade</strong> students<br />
take the Mathematics and<br />
Communication Arts MAP<br />
tests. 7 th <strong>Grade</strong> students<br />
take the Mathematics and<br />
Communication Arts tests.<br />
8 th <strong>Grade</strong> students take the<br />
Mathematics, Communication<br />
Arts and Science tests.<br />
Terra Nova (which is a nationally<br />
norm referenced<br />
test) is embedded in each of<br />
the content area test on the<br />
MAP. The MAP test therefore<br />
yields results as to how<br />
your son/daughter is doing<br />
compared to students in<br />
the state of Missouri and<br />
compared to students in<br />
the nation.<br />
MAP testing and the embedded<br />
Terra Nova are important<br />
to students as it<br />
goes on their permanent<br />
records and makes them<br />
aware of their own performance<br />
levels. It is also<br />
important to us as a school<br />
as one measure of how well<br />
we are doing in educating<br />
students. Finally, it is important<br />
to the district as<br />
MAP scores in large part<br />
determine accreditation by<br />
the Department of Elementary<br />
and Secondary Education<br />
of the state of Missouri.<br />
The <strong>Center</strong> <strong>School</strong><br />
<strong>District</strong> is “Accredited with<br />
Distinction”. We are very<br />
proud of this and want to<br />
continue to see growth and<br />
success for our students!<br />
As we near MAP time, you<br />
will receive a more detailed<br />
schedule of which days given<br />
grade levels are testing.<br />
Please make an effort to<br />
see that students are in<br />
attendance every day of the<br />
testing period.<br />
We will not have school<br />
on Friday, February 15 th<br />
and on Monday, February<br />
18 th in observance of<br />
President’s Day. We<br />
WILL have school on<br />
Thursday, February<br />
14 th .<br />
The first day for Track<br />
and Field Sports practice<br />
is Monday, February<br />
25 th . Students must have a<br />
physical on file to participate.<br />
Forms are available<br />
in the main office. Those<br />
students who have a valid<br />
physical on file do not need<br />
to get an additional physical.<br />
Students must be academically<br />
eligible to participate.<br />
March 13 th is an early<br />
dismissal day. Students<br />
will be dismissed at noon.<br />
During the morning we will<br />
be hosting the Middle<br />
<strong>School</strong> Career Day. This<br />
is being planned by Mrs.<br />
Seifert, Mrs. Timmons and<br />
Mrs. Frost and will give<br />
students the opportunity to<br />
hear from people with varied<br />
careers. Each year 50-<br />
65 different career speakers<br />
make themselves available<br />
to our students for this<br />
wonderful event! Our special<br />
thanks to the PTA for<br />
providing meals for our<br />
presenters.<br />
Parent/Teacher Spring<br />
Conferences will be held<br />
on Thursday, March 14 th<br />
after the regular school<br />
day. Conferences will take<br />
place from 3:00 to 4:00 and<br />
4:30 to 7:00 PM. You do<br />
not need an appointment.<br />
In conjunction with the

conferences Ms. Short and Mrs.<br />
Harris and their students will be<br />
hosting the <strong>Center</strong> Middle <strong>School</strong><br />
Art Fair. We hope you will be able<br />
to attend.<br />
Spring break is a full week. We<br />
will not have school Monday, March<br />
18 th through Friday, March 22 nd .<br />
<strong>School</strong> will resume on Monday,<br />
March 25, 2013.<br />
Finally, it is time to start thinking<br />
ahead to the end of year 8 th <strong>Grade</strong><br />
activities. The 8 th <strong>Grade</strong> dance is<br />
scheduled for Friday, May 17 th from<br />
6-9 PM. Only 8 th <strong>Grade</strong> students<br />
from CMS may attend this dance.<br />
The theme has not yet been chosen<br />
by the students. We do however,<br />
want to emphasize that this is not a<br />
Junior Prom. We ask that no limos<br />
are on school property. The dress<br />
code will be enforced regardless of<br />
the theme so it is important that all<br />
attire be purchased with that in<br />
mind. We want all 8 th <strong>Grade</strong> students<br />
to enjoy the dance and not<br />
feel obligated to purchase expensive<br />
clothing.<br />
The 8 th <strong>Grade</strong> recognition is on the<br />
calendar for Tuesday, May 21 st at<br />
6:30 PM. Please bear in mind that<br />
any student who must attend summer<br />
school and/or has not completed<br />
all 8 th grade requirements will<br />
not take part in the recognition ceremony.<br />
This does not mean that<br />
they cannot still pass and go on to<br />
the High <strong>School</strong> next year if they<br />
successfully complete summer<br />
school. Parents of those students<br />
who were in that position at semester<br />
were notified via letter.<br />
In order to take part in the recognition<br />
8 th <strong>Grade</strong> students must have<br />
successfully completed all requirements<br />
in order to go on to the High<br />
<strong>School</strong>. If a student had a core F for<br />
1 st Semester they will have to attend<br />
summer school and will not go<br />
through the recognition. The same<br />
is true for a core F or IP for 2 nd Semester.<br />
Behavior is also a consideration.<br />
Any student who has been<br />
out of school suspended or who has<br />
2 or more days of in school suspension<br />
during the month of May will<br />
not take part in the ceremony.<br />
Please encourage students to attend<br />
tutoring and to do what is necessary<br />
to be part of the recognition.<br />
