n October 19, 2007 our college 

announced that it has entered into a 

capital campaign to raise $7.5 million 

to fund major improvements to the 

Borger Academic Center and to build a new 

fitness/wellness center. This announcement marks 

a major milestone in the development of the 

institution. Becker College and Leicester Junior 

College trace their shared past to 1784, and our 

mission has never been more important. 

Historically, Becker College has provided 

educational opportunities to first-generation 

college students. I have heard numerous stories 

about alumni who came to Becker because it was 

their ONLY opportunity to obtain a college 

degree. These types of stories are still being 

written today. Becker College remains of critical 

importance because it offers a way to a better life 

for many who have so few of these opportunities.

Driven by higher costs, tuition at all colleges has 

increased dramatically. As a result, competition 

for students who can afford a college education 

has also increased. Fortunately, Becker College 

offers two beautiful campuses that are attractive to 

both students and parents. Research indicates, 

however, that some of our current facilities need 

improvement, and we are making the necessary 

investments so that the College can continue to 

attract a diverse student population. 

As alumni and friends of Becker College, we 

have all benefited from our relationship with the 

institution. Many of us live happily with good 

jobs and nice homes to support beautiful families. 

We have been blessed with an opportunity to 

improve ourselves and, as alumni, have a 

responsibility to do what we can so that others 

who follow have the same opportunity. 

I understand that very few of us can write a big 

check. It may not be apparent now, but every gift, 

big or small, changes lives. We can make a gift 

over several years, or better yet, we can include 

something for Becker in our estate plans. I have 

chosen to have a modest amount deducted from

It’s the season to embark on 

the campaign trail, and friendly 

Becker faces have been out 

meeting with trustees, alumni 

and local foundations to secure 

their financial support. 

Transforming Lives Through 

Education, was launched on 

October 19, 2007 with a goal of 

funding campus enhancements, 

increased enrollment, and greater 

affordability for students. 

The Becker College Board of Trustees announced 

the campaign to raise $7.5 million to more than 

150 members of the Becker community, including 

faculty, trustees, students, alumni and friends, at 

the annual Becker-Crafts Society reception. The 

agenda featured appearances by the Lieutenant 

Governor of Massachusetts, and former Worcester 

Mayor, Timothy Murray, and Trustee Chairman 

Emeritus, Gilbert Boutin ’39. 

Arthur DiGeronimo Jr., chairman of the 

Institutional Advancement Committee, 

enthusiastically announced the campaign, the

College’s first since 1994, 

and the most ambitious to 

date, with the good news 

that $3.1 million has already 

been committed toward the 

$7.5 million goal. The college’s trustees and community 

foundations count for much of those initial 

commitments. 

Lieutenant Governor Murray addressed the 

gathering at Tatnuck Country Club with the 

endorsement, “Becker College is a pre-eminent 

institution in Massachusetts for career-oriented 

education and serves as a major economic driver 

for this region. Your mission is so important to 

those who seek a better life because education is 

the key that unlocks the door to opportunity.” 

Distinguished in his bow tie, it was Mr. Boutin, 

the senior alumnus in the room, who stole the 

show. He returned to campus for the first time in 

more than 10 years to tell his story and to extol 

the virtues of a Becker education. Mr. Boutin 

was chairman of the Becker Board of Trustees for 

more than 20 years, so he took the opportunity to 

offer some advice to the current leadership. 

“Dare to be different,” he implored. “Becker has 

always been and always should be about offering 

unique programs that help students to get a job 

upon graduation. Knowledge and education are 

important for many reasons, but our graduates 

come from working class families and they need 

to get a good paying job when they are done here.

It is our moral responsibility to help these kids 

achieve their dreams.” 

The campaign will fund three initiatives: the 

construction of a new fitness and wellness center, 

renovations to the Borger Academic Center, and 

an increased endowment to provide more financial 

aid. All of these initiatives are considered priorities 

by the College’s strategic planning committee and 

will significantly enhance Becker’s ability to attract 

and educate qualified students. 

Fitness/Wellness Center 

Conceptual plans for this facility call for a 15,000square-foot 

addition to the existing gymnasium on 

the Leicester campus, at a cost of $5.25 million. 

When completed, the Becker Fitness/Wellness 

Center will serve as a hub for academic, athletic, 

and health-related activities and provide the 

College with a striking visual presence to attract 

students and enhance campus pride. The plan 

includes spaces for students to participate in 

individualized fitness training as well as intramural 

athletics. 

Renovations to the Borger Academic Center 

The Borger Academic Center was built on the 

Leicester campus in 1971, and no major 

renovations have been made since. The facility is

the College’s 200 seat auditorium. 

Planned improvements include 

upgrading every classroom with state-ofthe-art 

technology, enhanced lighting, 

new furniture and improved acoustics. 

Daniels Hall will be outfitted with new 

seating, lighting and sound. 

Endowment 

With its endowment, an institution has 

the flexibility to award financial aid to 

students in need while directing its 

operating funds toward daily operations 

as well as short- and long-term projects. 

The spiraling cost of attending college is 

becoming a serious obstacle, keeping 

more college hopefuls from realizing their 

future goals. Becker remains faithful to its 

pledge to provide access to a life-changing 

education. To succeed in this 

endeavor, the College is duty-bound to 

grow its endowment in order to provide 

more financial aid for more students. 

This exciting campaign is part of an 

overarching $11.5 million initiative to 

enhance student life at Becker. Prior to 

the public launch, the College was 

successful in securing funds for 

initiatives complementary to the capital 

projects described here. With those 

funds, a residence hall is currently under 

construction behind the 1812 House on 

the Leicester campus. Additionally, the 

installation of a turf field, also in 

Leicester, is scheduled for 2008. 

The campaign trail is expected to reach 

into 2010, during which time the college 

will reach out to you—alumni, parents, 

and friends. The Becker mission has 

never been more important and more 

needed. In the last few years the 

momentum has been growing, and on 

October 19 the Becker community 

celebrated that momentum. 


New Trustees

The College is pleased to announce the election 

of six new members to the Board of Trustees. 

Reverend Wilfred J. Bard is founder and president of both the New England Dream Center in Worcester, Mass. 

and Liberty Churches in Shrewsbury and Worcester. Rev. Bard has developed several leadership development programs for children, 

youth and young adults. He also runs numerous outreach programs from the Dream Center, thriving in the former 

Chestnut Street Congregational Church. Rev. Bard attended the Faith School of Theology in Charleston, Maine. 

Timothy F. Horan is the senior vice president of safety, health, environment and security for National Grid USA. His 

previous positions with National Grid and its predecessors over the past 19 years have included senior vice president of business 

and retail services, vice president of business services in Rhode Island and director of contract management. Mr. Horan is the 

treasurer of the Massachusetts Alliance for Economic Development and is active in his community. Prior to joining National 

Grid in 1988, Mr. Horan was on active duty in the U.S. Army and recently retired as a colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves. 

He is a graduate of Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Regis University. 

Joy McHugh ’55, of Cheshire, Conn., is a children’s author, pianist and retired teacher. She is a former vice president of 

the Royal Screw Machine Company in Waterbury, Conn. Active in her communities in Connecticut and Naples, Fla., she is a 

member of several cultural organizations. Mrs. McHugh is a graduate of Becker College and Southern Connecticut State 

University. 

Christopher P. Provo founded Provo Financial Services in 1992 after working on Wall Street. Mr. Provo is currently a 

registered representative, investment advisor representative, and branch manager of Jefferson Pilot Securities Corporation. A 

well-known business leader in the greater Worcester area, he has spoken in public on a wide range of financial subjects and conducts 

a popular series of financial workshops. Mr. Provo is a graduate of the University of New Hampshire. 

Peter J. Rowden is vice president of operations for the Cytyc Corporation. A graduate of Worcester Polytechnic Institute 

and Nichols College, he began his career with the Data General Corporation in Southboro, Mass. Mr. Rowden spent time 

during his childhood on the Leicester campus of Becker College, then Leicester Junior College, with his father, noted basketball 

coach, Paige Rowden. 

Sarah Williams owns and operates Treasure Hunt Farms in Rutland, Mass., providing a home to neglected or unwanted 

animals for 15 years. Mrs. Williams is a strong supporter of Becker College, since her late husband, Jefferson Williams, 

a graduate of Leicester Junior College (LJC), spent more than 30 years as an LJC and Becker trustee. Mrs. Williams has long 

been active in college events and has provided internship and employment opportunities for Becker animal science students at 

Treasure Hunt Farms. She has also served as a trustee of Girls, Inc. and Tufts School of Veterinary Medicine.

Becker had its most successful Llew Evans Scholarship Golf 

Tournament in its 15-year history on June 25 at the Sterling 

Country Club. The tournament drew 128 golfers and raised 

$30,000 in scholarship money. Highlights included an ace by Kevin 

Cote to win the hole-in-one contest on the 13th hole, and a 2007 

scholarship recipient, Alison Flynn, who attended the post-tournament 

reception to say thank you.

everyone and update the audience 

with some of the recent growth at 

the college and expanding academic 

programs. After catching up over 

cocktails and lunch, alumni moved 

to the bleachers to catch a football 

game: Becker vs. WPI. The Golden 

Years Luncheon is open to all alumni 

who have already celebrated a 50th 

class reunion. It has become a timehonored 

tradition at Becker and 

grows with each passing year.

days with her dog, Scooter, 

at their

Carol graduated from Becker 

Junior College 60 years ago 

and has retired from a 

fascinating career at 

Worcester's Hahnemann 

Hospital after 38 years of 

service. Knowing Carol, 

those years were dedicated 

to hard work. 


After meeting Becker Junior president Warren Lane 

at his Elm Street office in the spring of 1946, Carol 

decided to make what was to be one of the most 

important decisions of her life and attend the 

College later that fall. She selected Heywood House 

on Salisbury Street as her residence, and with house 

mother Ethel Stetson's oversight, Carol's life for the 

next two years was "a wonderful adventure," meeting 

friends like Audrey (Harlos) Muska '48, and 

Betty Jane (Wedge) Brown '48, with whom she still 

corresponds regularly. 

Because of her love of medicine, Carol embarked on 

the medical secretarial course with Professor 

Madeline Army's excellent tutelage. She studied 

medical stenography, shorthand, transcription, 

anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology. 

This very interesting course of study prepared one 

for employment in a physician’s office or hospital 

setting. 

After graduating in 1948, Carol was appointed secretary 

to the director of nursing and nursing education 

at Hahnemann Hospital (now UMass 

Memorial Medical Center Hahnemann Campus), 

one of the region's most prestigious and well-known 

institutions. For the first few years Carol did just 

about every job under the sun. In addition to her 

own duties, she covered for the medical secretary 

when on vacation, taking dictation from any of the

active staff surgeons' operative reports, covering 

the switchboard, or typing x-ray reports for the 

radiology department. 

In 1953 Carol remembers the difficult night of 

June 9: the day of the infamous Worcester Tornado 

which travelled 46 miles across the county, killed 

94, injured 1,288, and left 10,000 homeless. 

Everyone possible was involved in care that day. 

It was in 1962 that Carol met and married John E. 

Erickson. John worked as an audit supervisor for 

Blue Cross Blue Shield. Sadly, only a decade later, 

John became ill and passed away from cancer. 

Carol furthered her education by taking evening 

courses at Clark University. She was sometimes 

tempted to return to school to become a nurse, 

but ultimately she decided to stay in hospital 

administration. 

Through diligence and intelligence, she moved 

into more important positions and eventually 

became the first director of human resources in the 

hospital's history. In 1972 Carol established and 

managed Hahnemann's fledgling human resources 

department, with responsibility, at that time, for 

over 1,100 employees. She was a member of a sixperson 

management team and had other responsibilities, 

including division director of the housekeeping, 

laundry and linens, and the volunteer 

departments. It was "a great challenge and one 

gratefully accepted,” said Carol, and she stayed in 

the position for the next 15 years. She still recalls 

that "the job was overwhelming at times, but the 

challenge provided many more opportunities, and 

I thank God for my Becker education." 

Though Carol had long since graduated, she 

stayed active with Becker as a member of the 

Alumni Association Board. President Van Buskirk 

sought her out and asked her to join the Board of 

Trustees. As Carol says, "imagine, a graduate of the 

College, and then to be a member of the Board — 

that was the pinnacle of my career." 

In 1986 Carol retired from Hahnemann Hospital. 

She did not sit back and relax in retirement. In 

fact, just the opposite is true. Carol became president 

of the Hahnemann Auxiliary until the merger 

with UMass Memorial. The Massachusetts 

Hospital Association selected her to serve as 

ombudsman and liaison to hospital auxiliaries in 

Worcester County, in a volunteer capacity. 

It was not really until recent years that Carol fully 

retired. Somewhat of a world traveler, she has journeyed 

across the United States, including Hawaii, 

and visited England, France, and Spain. Finally 

able to relax, Carol's days are filled with sports,

such a hard-working life, she certainly deserves it.

destination, but a journey. 

That saying couldn’t be truer for Dan 

Prouty, of Charlton, Mass. and 1971 

graduate of Leicester Junior College. 

Dan’s career as a real estate developer has taken 

him down a lot of roads over 30 years and he’s 

enjoyed every minute of it. To this day Dan jokes 

that his wife Marilyn tells their daughters, 

Elisabeth and Michaela, that someday their father 

“will figure out what he wants to do when he 

grows up!” One thing is for certain, Dan brings 

boundless enthusiasm and good humor to all 

aspects of his life.

the Marketplace at the Falls in historic Sturbridge, 

Mass., and the right time was 1981. Since then Dan 

has developed numerous other large-scale commercial 

projects, bought and sold thousands of acres of land 

and built a reputation as a trusted partner in the complex 

world of real estate development. Dan brings a 

real sense of friendship and openness to everything he 

does and the outcome speaks for itself. 

His most recent projects are the construction of 

the global headquarters of IPG Photonics, a world 

leader in the design and manufacture of various 

types of lasers, and the New England regional distribution 

hub for Goya Foods, which is managed 

by Carlos Mangual, father of Becker alumna 

Vanessa Mangual ‘04. 

Prouty is an old “Yankee name” and Dan is proud 

of his heritage. He grew up with his four brothers, 

in Oxford, just to the south of the Leicester campus. 

In another Becker connection, closer to 

home, Dan’s mother, Helen, graduated from 

Becker Junior College in 1937, so in many ways 

his personal history is reflective of the rich history 

of Becker College. 

After graduating with his associate’s degree from 

Leicester Junior, Dan went immediately to work in 

real estate. Somehow he found the time to get his 

baccalaureate degree at nearby Nichols College, 

taking classes at night. It was his years at LJC, 

under the watchful eyes of professors such as John 

Scarborough, Bert Saymon and Richard Savage, 

that really gave Dan the foundation on which he 

constructed his career. 

While at LJC, Dan also met two of his greatest

Mark, a contractor, lives in Nashua, N.H. Nick, a 

National Junior College Athletic Association All 

New England soccer midfielder while at LJC, now 

resides in Colorado Springs, Colorado. 

To this day Dan, Mark and Nick get together 

often. This past summer the three enjoyed a spectacular 

fly-in fishing trip to interior Maine where 

they spent more time catching up with each other 

than, to their chagrin, catching fish. Nick said the 

LJC memories that often come up involve a conga 

line at the J. Geils concert in the auditorium, 

watching the draft lottery on television in Knight 

Hall, and war protests. 

Dan also hosts an annual charity golf tournament 

at Cape Arundel Golf Club in Maine where other 

LJC graduates drop by from time to time, including 

Mark, Nick and Billy Connors ’71. A couple 

of years ago, Dan's players crossed paths on the 

green with President George H. W. Bush, David 

Toms, and Phil Mickelson, who were there for 

another tournament. 

Dan, Mark and Nick were all glad to hear about 

the May 2008 LJC All-Class Reunion being 

organized by Ken Kaufman, LJC ’65. “It’s one of 

the best ideas I’ve heard in years,” said Mark. 

“Hopefully, it’ll give a lot of LJC graduates a 

chance to come back to campus and get involved. 

I’m really looking forward to it.” 

Out in Colorado, Nick is planning to make the 

trip east. “Knowing that this big reunion is taking 

place is pretty exciting,” he said. 

It’s that sense of excitement that Dan hopes translates 

to all LJC alumni, near and far. In this case he 

stresses, “it is about the destination!”

On Friday, August 31, a gathering at Jillian's 

of Boston kicked-off Becker's Alumni Night 

at Fenway Park. More than 90 die-hard fans 

braved the humidity to watch the Red Sox 

take on the Baltimore Orioles on a historic 

night where pitcher Mike Timlin pitched his 

1,000th game. After a suspenseful contest, 

final score was 9-8 Orioles.

Fla. Tony Jannus Award for leadership 

in commercial aviation. 

Southwest is the largest carrier at 

Tampa International Airport. (Tony

flight, from St. Petersburg to Tampa, 

in 1914.) Additionally, Colleen was 

named “Heroine of Hearts,” by 

executive chairman Herb Kelleher, 

for her dedication to Southwest’s 

32,000-member “family.” 

’64 Noland Smith retired at the 

age of 53 and moved back to San 

Diego after 18 years in Los 

Angeles. He has a second home in

On July 4, 2007, Harland W. 

Warner, class of 1951, former trustee 

and director of public relations and 

alumni activities at Becker and an 

award-winning public relations 

executive, passed away at his home in 

Vienna, Va. He was 76 years old. 

Hal, as he was known, was an expert 

in managing crises such as natural disasters, 

industrial accidents, product recalls 

and downsizings. In a 1998 letter to the 

editor of the Washington Post, Hal noted 

“When one is sick, a doctor is brought 

in. When a company or an association 

has communications problems, a public 

relations professional is often called in 

to write the prescription.” As a proud 

past president of the Public Relations 

Society of America, he was very active 

within his profession and wrote and 

spoke about it often.

She had been involved with United Way 

for several years, raising money as a 

loaned executive and volunteering as cochair 

of the Housing and Homelessness 

Allocations Panel.

Hal was educated in Worcester, first 

at Becker and then at Clark University. 

After graduation he worked for many 

years at the Hartford Times newspaper 

before returning to Becker, where, in 

just five years, he set the College standard 

in public relations and alumni 

affairs for years to come. He left Becker 

in 1970 to further develop his career in 

PR at such firms as Corning, Manning, 

Selvage and Lee and Capitoline/MS&L. 

Hal also served as an adviser to Howard 

University and as an adjunct professor 

at George Mason University. 

In recent years, Hal and his wife, 

Joyce, spent much of their time with 

family and traveling the world. They 

took fascinating trips to China, 

Mongolia, India, Australia and Kenya. 

He is survived by his wife, their five 

children and nine grandchildren.

The fall of 2007 marks the first year of 

the Becker Student Laptop Initiative. This 

forward-looking initiative provides all 

qualified freshmen with a state-of-the-art 

Hewlett Packard wireless laptop computer 

at no additional cost to the student. The 

Office of Academic Affairs expects the 

initiative to measurably enhance the 

academic experience and benefit new 

students by setting the standard across 

the curriculum for communication, 

collaboration and connectivity. 

In conjunction with the initiative, the 

college has also introduced a new course 

in the general education core called 

Technology and Society. The new course 

has been designed to increase students’ 

level of awareness and understanding of 

the social, legal and ethical issues related 

to the role of technology in today’s society.

Tom Cooley, director of Student Services, 

has noticed that the renovations have 

changed how the Cedar Hall residents feel 

about their dormitory. “They are proud of 

where they live. That pride carries over 

into everything they do,” he emphasized. 

A plasma television was installed as part 

of the renovation, which has enabled the 

resident life staff to host movie nights in 

the dormitory. On Sundays, students 

gather in the living area to watch football. 

A study area with wireless internet access 

was also created so that students can 

work in a quiet area.

Ward, who, as brother and sister, visited 

their grandmother, Annabelle Ellsworth, at

Ellsworth served as housemother at the 

dormitory from 1951 until 1959. During a 

short speaking program, Mr. Tilton recalled 

how Becker students lived during that era. 

Times have certainly changed, but Cedar 

Hall continues to be a hub of activity and 

a point of pride for Becker College. 

This past July, Dr. Michael K. Townsley 

was named dean of management and 

criminal justice. Dr. Townsley is “eager to 

get going on the exciting work ahead.” 

He received a doctorate from the 

University of 

Pennsylvania 

and brings 

with him to 

the position, 

in addition to 

his years in 

the classroom, 

a 

wealth of 

experience as

each year, Becker holds three pinning 

ceremonies, in August or September, 

December and in May, just before

Becker has been a partner in establishing 

the Helen A. Bowditch Health Center, now

open at nearby Elm Park Community School. 

Nurse practitioners on the Becker faculty 

and nursing students are helping to staff 

the school health center, the first of its kind 

in Massachusetts. Operated by Family 

Health Center of Worcester, the center 

serves Elm Park students during the day 

and is open to community members in the 

afternoon and evenings.

Sandberg, director of community service 

programs at United Way of Central 

Massachusetts, visited the students to 

discuss the value of volunteering.

Bill Ruska ’37 passed away nearly 10 years ago, 

but his impact on Becker is stronger than ever.

n 1994, Bill and his wife Gertrude celebrated 

their 50 th wedding anniversary. That same year 

they made a gift of one-quarter of a million 

dollars to Becker. That was the single most 

generous gift the College had ever received from an 

alumnus until that time. Bill was adamant that he 

wanted to express appreciation to his alma mater for 

paving the way to success in business and his desire to 

have the family name permanently associated with 

Becker. 

After such a long and rewarding life together, 

Gertrude chose to honor her husband’s memory at her 

own passing, and perpetuate Bill’s lasting 

affection for Becker, by generously making a bequest to 

Becker College. Gertrude just passed away last 

November. The College learned of her gift of $100,000 

in January and fittingly established the William and 

Gertrude Ruska Endowed Fund at Becker. The proceeds from the fund will be utilized to 

enhance the collection in the Ruska Library. 

While at Becker, Bill acquired the skills that would serve him in a long-term career. 

Like many other Becker graduates of his time, he was recruited upon graduation to join 

General Electric’s executive training program on the recommendation of then college 

president, Warren Lane. Bill remained at GE for 43 years, retiring in 1980. 

“Bill was extremely grateful for his Becker experience,” Jerry Tuori, VP at Becker, 

explained. “During one of my visits to their home in Swansboro, North Carolina, Bill 

explained that his interest in the stock market was piqued during a finance class at Becker. 

His success in the stock market enabled Bill to devote himself to the loves of his life — 

Gertrude, their two sons, golf and travel.” 

In the early 1960s Bill and Gertrude began a systematic program of “seeing the world,” 

as Bill explained. While the Alps and Scotland were among their favorite destinations, the 

Ruskas’ travels took them to Scandinavia, Russia, Greece, Egypt, Morocco, Japan, Thailand, 

China, and Malaysia. Following his retirement, Bill kept busy as an active day-trader, 

capitalizing on his Becker education, to fund the yearly vacations. Bill was especially fond of 

the Royal Troon Golf Course and St. Andrews, in Scotland. 

In 1995, Bill and Gertrude visited the Worcester campus to tour the newly-renovated 

library that was being named in his honor before an audience of classmates, family and 

friends, students and faculty. 

Becker is grateful for Bill and Gertrude’s generosity. The William and Gertrude Ruska 

Endowed Fund serves to enhance the collection and services of the Ruska Library, to the 

benefit of thousands of students building their futures at Becker.

a hub of activity leading 

up to its debut as 

host for the October 6 

kick-off of the Intercollegiate 

Horse Show 

Association (IHSA) 

2007-2008 season. For those unfamiliar 

with the goings-on in the equestrian world, 

let’s skip right to the good stuff: in our 

competitive region, the equestrian team at 

Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley 

has reigned as champion since 1997; 

no team had been able to break the top 

three (Mount Holyoke, Smith College in 

Northampton, and University of 

Massachusetts at Amherst) for several 

years. Last year, after finishing fifth the 

previous two years, the Becker equestrian 

team made it into the winner’s circle at 

third place. Naturally, the buzz about 

Becker has been growing and should be 

reaching fever pitch after their tie for second, 

on their home turf, with UMass at the 

October 6 show. 

Riders from 10 other colleges converged 

on the Center’s outdoor arena in Paxton.

Phillips (third place), Mariola Podpora (third 

place), Beth Bloomer (first place), and Renee 

Provost (second place). 

Helping the Becker team get a leg up, the 

2006-2007 season was a record-breaking year. 

They earned several honors at the May 2007 

IHSA National Championship show in West 

Springfield, Mass. Freshman Carolyn Kane, 

who had qualified for the National Championships 

while earning 13 ribbons and 50 points 

for her team, placed sixth in the walk-trot 

division. It was the first time in more than 15 

years that a Becker College rider competed in 

the IHSA nationals. Head coach Ed Paro also 

earned honors, with the annual IHSA Coach 

Sportsmanship Award.

hosting responsibilities on October 6 with fellow 

Worcester schools Clark University and 

the College of the Holy Cross. Mount Holyoke, 

Smith, and other schools brought in a total of 

15 horses to add to Becker’s 20 for the IHSA 

competition requisite of 35.

opportunities. Over 

time there has been one 

constant, and that is the 

wonderful support we 

receive from our proud 

alumni and friends. 

On behalf of the entire 

Becker community,

to each and every person and organization that made a gift to 

the College during the last fiscal year. 

Both the number of gifts and the total dollars raised have been 

growing annually, and we are optimistic that this trend will 

continue in the years ahead. We value your friendship and 

depend upon your generosity to enable the College to fulfill 

our educational mission and commitment to our students. 

This past year, your support has translated directly into a number 

of important positive initiatives, academic programs, student 

services, and campus facilities. In Academics, some major 

accomplishments are: 

❚ installation of wireless networking in all lab and 

lecture spaces 

❚ enhanced technology in the campus libraries 

❚ the refurbishing of all classrooms, with new tables 

and chairs 

❚ added concentrations in laboratory animal 

management and applied behavior analysis. 

These new concentrations are relatively unique among New 

England institutions of higher education and link with post 

graduation employment opportunities in the growing life sciences 

and educational psychology fields. 


With yet another increase in enrollment, Student Services has 

made the following proactive changes: 

❚ broadened choices of co-curricular activities 

and programs 

❚ increased inter- and off-campus transportation 

resources 

❚ the addition of women’s lacrosse and men’s ice hockey 

programs, furthering the options for students who 

wish to take part in NCAA Division III athletics. 

Campus facilities in both Worcester and Leicester have been 

upgraded, renovated and constructed: 

❚ construction of a new residence hall behind 1812 

House (in progress) 

❚ refurbished façade of Russell House 

❚ new brick paver paths between the Borger Academic 

Center and the Student Center, which will feature a 

vintage wrought iron clock 

❚ renovations to the common areas in Cedar Hall have 

transformed it into a beautiful and comfortable space 

in which students can live and learn. 

Clearly, though the Becker community has accomplished 

much in the past year, the future still holds many challenges 

and high expectations. It is our goal to exceed these expectations 

and continue to make Becker the kind of institution you 

can be proud of and that our students deserve. It is an exciting 

time and your continued support is more important than 

ever as we move forward and successfully build a better Becker!

Northeastern, she attended the 

MBA program at Babson 

College in Wellesley. For many 

years she worked at Harvard 

Business School where she was the director of several executive 

education programs. In 1999, following the death of her husband, she

A longtime resident of Winchester, Mass., she spends time at her 

vacation home in Wells, Maine where she owns and operates her

Closing the gap between financial 

aid and financial need can be 

extremely vexing for many Becker 

College students. For Caitlin 

Visscher of Kinderhook, New 

York, a senior majoring in interior 

design, receiving the Llew Evans 

Scholarship has made a world 

of difference. 

A resident assistant in Willow 

Hall on the Worcester campus, 

Caitlin is an active member of 

the Becker College community. 

She volunteers on campus for 

Student Services as an 

orientation leader and also gives 

her time off campus to Habitat 

for Humanity. “It’s important for 

me to be involved — not only 

with my classmates but with others 

too,” she voices. 

The scholarship has lightened her 

anxiety and concerns about 

paying for college and has 

changed her persepctive. 

“The scholarship allows me to spend more 

time on my education at Becker than 

worrying about part-time jobs or more loans.” 

“I am sincerely thankful to be a 

recipient of the Evans 

Scholarship,” says Caitlin. “The
