sHANNON PeeL / DMOTe
Reining from Sydney, Australia, there is no denying world renowned graffiti artist DMOTE (Shannon Peel)’s influence on the global underground art scene. You
mention graffiti in Australia, people say DMOTE.
Running the Australian graffiti scene for the part 10 - 15 years, DMOTE has accomplished a phenomenal plethora of work, and now, transcending into a fine arts
focused phase of his career, is bridging the gap between his roots in street painting and a culture sensitive approach to commercial work.
DMOTE’s style derives from his youth and life experiences while his inspirations come from the streets and graffiti. His paintings are a natural progression from a
misspent youth to a new found maturity. His artistic ability lends itself to allow him to act as a designer, illustrator, painter and curator in addition to graffiti artist.
Writing graffiti has taken DMOTE and his artwork to the subways, streets and galleries the world over - traveling to the likes of New York, Tokyo, Italy, Spain,
Canada, Holland, Switzerland, Germany, Croatia and Bosnia (Sarajevo), he has had more real life experiences than many would welcome but all he says were
well worth it. Curating exhibitions and festivals around the world as well as being published in countless publications and videos on the subject (i-D, Dazed and
Confused, The Face, Refill, Warp, Rolling Stone to name a few), DMOTE continues to stay true to the fundamentals of the art form and remains active as a street
writer and artist.
Dmote graduated from Randwick college (Graphic design Diploma) 1993, has completed courses in Printmaking, Screenprinting, Photography and Life Drawing
since. Has worked in the Industry since graduation, Publishing, Theatre (Scenic art) and more recent years Fashion. Dmote has run graphics co. “Upstairs Collective”
for the past two years with partner Nic Adamovich, clients include - MTV, Reebok, Carhaart, Sony Ericsson, Clemenger BBDO, and just completed artist
edition advertising campaign for Absolut Vodka (Absolut Rasberri).
Dmote has organised and curated exhibitions and festivals,
- Royal Elastics Camoulfage exhibition (2002) Depot gallery, Dank st, Sydney
- Blade (King of graff) (2004) Space 3 gallery, Sydney
