Dear Friend and Colleague,<br />

On behalf <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> International Association <strong>of</strong> Endodontic Associations (IFEA) and <strong>the</strong> Hellenic<br />

Endodontic <strong>Society</strong> we are very pleased to invite you to <strong>the</strong> IFEA 8 th Endodontic World Congress,<br />

to be held in A<strong>the</strong>ns, Greece, on October 6-9, 2010.<br />

In 2010, <strong>the</strong> International Federation <strong>of</strong> Endodontic Associations celebrates 20 years <strong>of</strong> organizing<br />

high caliber Endodontic Congresses around <strong>the</strong> world. After Mexico City in 1990, Paris in 1992, Rome<br />

in 1995, Jerusalem in 1998, Madrid in 2001, Brisbane in 2004 and Vancouver in 2007, <strong>the</strong> 2010 Congress<br />

returns to Europe and A<strong>the</strong>ns.<br />

A<strong>the</strong>ns, named after A<strong>the</strong>na, goddess <strong>of</strong> wisdom and knowledge, represents more than 3000 years<br />

<strong>of</strong> Hellenic and Byzantine culture. In <strong>the</strong> aftermath <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 2004 Olympic Games, it is a modern,<br />

vibrant city with intense cultural and artistic activity and a very lively nightlife. A<strong>the</strong>ns, with its blend<br />

<strong>of</strong> history and modernity, toge<strong>the</strong>r with its natural beauty and mild climate, is a unique and interesting<br />

city to visit and enjoy.<br />

The Organizing Committee is preparing a comprehensive scientific programme which addresses<br />

<strong>the</strong> needs <strong>of</strong> our clinical discipline from both <strong>the</strong> scientific and practical aspects. Plenary symposia,<br />

lectures and workshops will be given by distinguished clinicians and leading experts in endodontics.<br />

Our young and talented clinicians and researchers will also have <strong>the</strong> opportunity to present <strong>the</strong> fruits<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir latest endeavors.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> large trade exhibition which will be held at <strong>the</strong> Congress venue, <strong>the</strong> international dental<br />

companies will be eager to show you <strong>the</strong> latest advancements in en dodontic devices, materials and<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>. Paul V. Abbott, Australia<br />

“Root Canal filling concepts, techniques and materials – do we have <strong>the</strong> evidence to support what we do”<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>. Paul Abbott is <strong>the</strong> Winthrop Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Clinical Dentistry at The University <strong>of</strong> Western<br />

Australia where he is <strong>the</strong> Deputy Dean <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> School <strong>of</strong> Dentistry and <strong>the</strong> Director <strong>of</strong> Postgraduate<br />

Studies and Research. He also co-ordinates and teaches both <strong>the</strong> undergraduate and postgraduate<br />

endodontic training programmes. Pr<strong>of</strong>. Abbott is a Specialist Endodontist and he works in a private<br />

practice on a part-time basis. From 2003-2009, he was <strong>the</strong> Dean <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> School <strong>of</strong> Dentistry and<br />

Director <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Oral Health Centre <strong>of</strong> WA. He has lectured extensively with over 550 presentations<br />

in 32 countries. He has written a comprehensive review <strong>of</strong> “Endodontics and Dental Traumatology”<br />

which is used in most dental schools in Australia and several o<strong>the</strong>r countries. He has published 80<br />

scientific articles in refereed dental journals, contributed to 11 chapters to textbooks and serves on<br />

<strong>the</strong> Editorial Boards and Scientific Review Committees <strong>of</strong> 15 international dental journals. Pr<strong>of</strong>. Abbott is currently <strong>the</strong><br />

Immediate Past President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> International Federation <strong>of</strong> Endodontic Associations (IFEA). In 2004, he was awarded <strong>the</strong><br />

University <strong>of</strong> Western Australia’s Excellence in Teaching Award and in 2008, <strong>the</strong> Australian Dental Association awarded him<br />

<strong>the</strong> ADA Service Medallion for his long-term service to <strong>the</strong> dental pr<strong>of</strong>ession.<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>. J. Craig Baumgartner, USA<br />

“How Effective is Root Canal Debridement and Disinfection”<br />

Received a BS in Pharmacy from <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Wisconsin, a DDS from <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Minnesota,<br />

an MS in Oral Biology from George Washington University and a PhD in Microbiology/Immunology<br />

from <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Maryland. He is a Diplomate <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> American Board <strong>of</strong> Endodontics and<br />

past President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> American Board <strong>of</strong> Endodontics. He previously was Chief <strong>of</strong> Microbiology<br />

and Director - Advanced Education Program in Endodontics at <strong>the</strong> United States Army Institute<br />

<strong>of</strong> Dental Research and Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He is currently Pr<strong>of</strong>essor, Chairman <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>Endodontology</strong> and Director - Advanced Education Program in Endodontics at<br />

<strong>the</strong> School <strong>of</strong> Dentistry, Oregon Health & Science University. Dr. Baumgartner has a microbiology<br />

research laboratory for <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> microorganisms associated with infections <strong>of</strong> endodontic origin.<br />

He has published over 100 research articles, twelve chapters for textbooks and was co-editor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

6th edition <strong>of</strong> Ingle’s Endodontics. He was previously Associate Editor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Journal <strong>of</strong> Endodontics. He practices in <strong>the</strong><br />

Faculty Dental Practice at <strong>the</strong> School <strong>of</strong> Dentistry, OHSU.<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>. Shimon Friedman, Canada<br />

“The current best evidence for Endodontic Treatment Οutcomes”<br />

Dr. Shimon Friedman is Pr<strong>of</strong>essor and Head <strong>of</strong> Endodontics, and Director <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> M.Sc. Endodontics<br />

Program at <strong>the</strong> Faculty <strong>of</strong> Dentistry, University <strong>of</strong> Toronto. He received <strong>the</strong> D.M.D. degree (1975)<br />

and certificate in endodontics (1983) from <strong>the</strong> Hebrew University in Jerusalem, where he had taught<br />

for 17 years before assuming <strong>the</strong> position in Toronto. Dr. Friedman is board-certified in endodontics<br />

in Israel, and served as Chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Isc <strong>Society</strong> from 1985 to 1988. He has served on <strong>the</strong><br />

editorial boards <strong>of</strong> all major rael Endodontiendodontic journals, and as Co-chief Editor <strong>of</strong> Visual<br />

Endodontic Curriculum. Dr. Friedman has published over 125 articles in peer-reviewed scientific<br />

journals, 10 textbook chapters and many research abstracts, and has presented over 230 national<br />

and international lectures. In recognition <strong>of</strong> his research contributions, Dr. Friedman was awarded<br />

<strong>the</strong> 2008 Louis I. Grossman Award by <strong>the</strong> American Association <strong>of</strong> Endodontists. Dr. Friedman also maintains a private<br />

practice limited to Endodontics in Toronto.<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>. Ken Hargreaves, USA<br />

“An overview <strong>of</strong> Regenerative Endodontics”<br />

Ken Hargreaves received his DDS from Georgetown University School <strong>of</strong> Dentistry, his PhD in<br />

physiology from <strong>the</strong> Uniformed Services University <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Health Sciences in Be<strong>the</strong>sda, MD, and<br />

his certificate in Endodontics from <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Minnesota. Ken was a senior staff fellow<br />

at <strong>the</strong> Pain Clinic <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Neurobiology and Anes<strong>the</strong>siology Branch <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> NIDCR for five years,<br />

and <strong>the</strong>n associate pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Endodontics and Pharmacology at <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Minnesota for<br />

seven years. He joined <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 1997, as<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essor and Chair <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Endodontics, with a joint position in <strong>the</strong> Departments <strong>of</strong><br />

Pharmacology, Physiology and Surgery. He has maintained a private practice limited to Endodontics<br />

and is a Diplomate <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> American Board <strong>of</strong> Endodontists. His area <strong>of</strong> research focuses on <strong>the</strong><br />

pharmacology <strong>of</strong> pain and inflammation. Ken has received an NIH MERIT Award for pain research and two IADR<br />

Distinguished Scientist Awards. He has published more than 130 articles and, with Harold Goodis, co-edited Seltzer and<br />

Bender’s Dental Pulp, and with Steve Cohen, co-edited Pathways <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pulp. Ken also serves as editor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Journal <strong>of</strong><br />

Endodontics.<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>. Dr. Edgar Schäfer, Germany<br />

“An Evidence-based approach on mechanical preparation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> root canal system”<br />

Born 1961. 1988 gained Dr med dent; 1996 PhD <strong>the</strong>sis and appointment as “Privatdozent”; since 2002<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor at <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Operative Dentistry, University <strong>of</strong> Münster, Germany.<br />

Since 2008 head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Central Interdisciplinary Ambulance in <strong>the</strong> School <strong>of</strong> Dentistry, University<br />

<strong>of</strong> Münster, Germany.<br />

Between 1995 and 2005 executive board member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> German Association <strong>of</strong> Operative<br />

Dentistry (DGZ) and from 2004-2009 executive board member and since 2009 chair <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Study<br />

group for <strong>Endodontology</strong> and Traumatology (AGET) associated with <strong>the</strong> German Association <strong>of</strong><br />

Operative Dentistry.<br />

Certified specialist for <strong>Endodontology</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> DGZ; active and certified member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>European</strong> <strong>Society</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Endodontology</strong><br />

More than 180 publications and contributions to several textbooks; nearly 300 lectures all around Europe and North-<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>. Syngkuk Kim, USA<br />

“Endodontic Microsurgery. An evidence-based approach”<br />

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS<br />

Dr. Kim is <strong>the</strong> Louis I. Grossman Pr<strong>of</strong>essor and chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Endodontics at <strong>the</strong><br />

School <strong>of</strong> Dental Medicine, University <strong>of</strong> Pennsylvania. He earned his dental degree and certificate in<br />

Endodontics from <strong>the</strong> School <strong>of</strong> Dental and Oral Surgery at Columbia University in New York. Dr.<br />

Kim also received his Ph.D. degree in circulatory physiology from <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Physiology at<br />

<strong>the</strong> Medical School, Columbia University. In 2002 he received an Honorary Medical Doctor degree<br />

from <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Graz, Austria.<br />

Dr. Kim is well known and respected for his research in dental pulp physiology and microcirculation<br />

and <strong>the</strong> AAE has awarded him <strong>the</strong> Louis I. Grossman Award for outstanding research and <strong>the</strong> Ralph<br />

F. Sommer Award as principal author <strong>of</strong> “publications <strong>of</strong> significance in <strong>the</strong> science and art <strong>of</strong> endodontics.” He is also <strong>the</strong><br />

1991 recipient <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Endodontic and Pulp Biology Research Awards from <strong>the</strong> IADR. When he joined <strong>the</strong> Dental School<br />

at <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Pennsylvania in 1992 as chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Endodontics, Dr. Kim not only brought <strong>the</strong><br />

department into <strong>the</strong> “New Age” <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Microscope but also established <strong>the</strong> Microscope Training Center at <strong>the</strong> School. For<br />

this new field in endodontics he developed a series <strong>of</strong> endodontic instruments for endodontic microsurgery, specifically <strong>the</strong><br />

KiS ultrasonic tips and a complete microsurgical instrument set. Since its inception, leaders in endodontic education and<br />

clinical practitioners from <strong>the</strong> USA, South America, Europe, Asia and Australia have been trained at <strong>the</strong> Center.<br />

Colleagues are cordially invited to present <strong>the</strong> results <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir research and clinical endeavors. Participants<br />

wishing to contribute to <strong>the</strong> Scientific Program <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Congress are kindly requested to submit <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

abstracts before May 1st, 2008, toge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong> registration form and <strong>the</strong> registration fee <strong>of</strong><br />

at least one author (Presenting).<br />

Interested presenters can participate in one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> following sessions:<br />

1. Free Lectures<br />

The Organizing Committee invites colleagues to deliver a 30-45 minutes lecture on an endodontic<br />

subject <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> speaker’s choice. The topic must relate to a clinical or scientific issue. Applications must<br />

be made by submitting an abstract. The selection will be made by <strong>the</strong> organising committee according<br />

to <strong>the</strong> scientific merit.<br />

2. Oral Presentation <strong>of</strong> Research<br />

Τhe research work submitted should be original, innovative and should not have been presented<br />

elsewhere. Applications must be made by submitting an abstract. Each presenter will be allowed 12 min<br />

for presentation and discussion.<br />

3. Poster Presentation <strong>of</strong> Research<br />

The abstract must be original, and nei<strong>the</strong>r has been published nor is under consideration by ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />

journal. Those that are not relevant to <strong>Endodontology</strong>, are over-length or technically deficient will be<br />

rejected. Applications must be made by submitting an abstract.<br />

4. Table Clinics or Videos<br />

Colleagues are invited to present a novel clinical procedure or technique or a special feature <strong>of</strong> an<br />

endodontically related syndrome. In this session, slides, models, radiographs and videos may be used.<br />

These 10 minutes presentations shall be given on a one-one basis or to a small audience. An abstract<br />

is required.<br />

The Scientific Committee will endeavour to schedule abstracts according to authors’ preferences but<br />

reserves <strong>the</strong> right to decide on <strong>the</strong> final form <strong>of</strong> presentation.<br />

Abstract format<br />

1. Size: The abstract should not exceed 250 words.<br />

2. Style: The abstract must be typed in English in Times New Roman 11pt and will be adjusted in size for<br />

printing. Abstracts should not contain figures or tables.<br />

2.a. Free Lectures and Table Clinics or Videos<br />

The abstracts should provide a brief outline <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> material to be presented.<br />

2.b. Oral and Poster Presentations <strong>of</strong> Research<br />

The abstract should include <strong>the</strong> aim <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> study and an outline <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> methodology, results and<br />

conclusions.<br />

The Scientific Committee will review all submitted abstracts. Selected abstracts will be presented as<br />

Oral or Poster presentations or Free Lectures or Table Clinic or Video.<br />

Authors <strong>of</strong> abstracts accepted for presentation will receive notification and information regarding <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

presentation, by June 1st, 2010.<br />

Oral Presentations<br />

All authors will be informed in writing <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir presentation time. Each presentation should not exceed<br />

8 minutes plus 2 minutes discussion.<br />

All Congress Halls will be at <strong>the</strong> A<strong>the</strong>ns Hilton Hotel, and will be equipped with data video projector for<br />

Power Point presentations, laser pointers etc.<br />

Poster Presentations<br />

Posters will be ga<strong>the</strong>red, numbered and listed according to <strong>the</strong> Scientific Committee’s instructions.<br />

Posters will be affixed, discussed and removed on <strong>the</strong> dates and at <strong>the</strong> times, which will be communicated to<br />

authors.<br />

Posters Size (portrait): Maximum width: 90 cm, Maximum Height 120 cm. Only scotch tape and selfadhesive<br />

pads are allowed.<br />

PC Reception<br />

A PC reception desk for acceptance and checking <strong>of</strong> PC disks will be located nearby <strong>the</strong> Congress<br />

Halls. All USB or PC disks should be clearly labelled with <strong>the</strong> author’s name and <strong>the</strong> respective session.<br />

Speakers are kindly requested to provide <strong>the</strong>ir USB or PC disks at least 1 hour prior to <strong>the</strong>ir respective<br />

presentation.<br />

Book <strong>of</strong> Abstracts<br />

A CD containing all abstracts and a list <strong>of</strong> Authors in alphabetical order will be distributed to all registrants<br />

when <strong>the</strong>y collect <strong>the</strong>ir Congress kit, at <strong>the</strong> registration desk.<br />

Certificate <strong>of</strong> Attendance<br />

A certificate <strong>of</strong> attendance will be given to each registrant participant, during Congress.<br />

Continuing Education Credits<br />

Attendance at <strong>the</strong> Congress Scientific Sessions will qualify for C.E.C. The number <strong>of</strong> hours will be<br />

confirmed on release <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> full programme. Delegates will be able to download attendance certificates<br />

from <strong>the</strong> website.<br />

These times are not always strictly adhered to. Many shops in tourist resorts are open seven<br />

days a week.<br />

Department’s stores and supermarkets are open from 09.00-20.00 hours (Monday-Friday) and from<br />

08.00-15.00 hrs (Saturday) and are closed on Sunday. Banks and Post <strong>of</strong>fices are open from 08.00-14:00<br />

hours (Monday-Friday).<br />

Travel and visa<br />

Upon request, <strong>the</strong> Congress Organizer will send you a letter <strong>of</strong> invitation to obtain a visa. Applications<br />

for a letter <strong>of</strong> invitation should be sent to <strong>the</strong> Congress Organizer before August 20 th 2010.<br />

Wea<strong>the</strong>r<br />

Typically Mediterranean climate. A<strong>the</strong>ns enjoys relatively mild winters and lovely, temperate autumns and<br />

springs. The climate is pleasant, and sunshine is plentiful. October tends to be calm and warm without<br />

being stifling, <strong>the</strong> swimming might still be possible and <strong>the</strong> temperature ranges from 16°C to 22°C.<br />

An average journey by taxi from Elef<strong>the</strong>rios Venizelos Airport to City Centre should take approximately<br />

From Airport by Metro<br />

The metro (Lines 2 and 3) run from about 05.00 am until 2.00 am, every 10 minutes, <strong>the</strong> trip takes<br />
