The following article was written by B. L. Aycock, Kountze, TX, and appeared in &9
Confederacv Vetera! of December, 1922. irr. Aycock was the great uncle of Jack Jr.,
Ed, and Joe Aycock, all former residents of Canollton. He, Burwell Lewis Aycock, was
a lawyer in Kountze, Texas, and lived to be 84, having outlived his eleven brothers and
sisters. ln 1904 he came to Carrollton to visit his brother, Joseph Amis Aycock Jr., at
the occasion of the fufieral of another brother, William Carey Aycock, of Moultrie, GA.
The two brothers had no! seen each other in 25 years.
THE LONE STAR GUARDS
This company was the first infantry troops, Confederate, raised at Waco, Tex.,
and left Waco under Capt. Ed Ryan,onJuly2l, 1861, forVirginia. AtMarlin several
Falls County boys joined, among them the w ter, the company reaching Richmond,
September 11, 1861. Thjs was one of thirty companies raiseC an the State destined for
the seat of the war. Each company had one hundred men. They assembled at
Hanisburg and, after three weeks'drilling, were formally enlisted to serve three years,
or "endurin o' de vr'ah."
Gov. Frank Lubbock, as the representative of the then infant Confederacy,
officiated when these companies became a part of the army to be under the afteMards
immortal Lee. We were armed with allsorts ofgunsexceptthe modem (at that time)
arms of war. We entrained on flat cars at Houston for Beaumont, and on the way it
was common to hear the report of guns, as the alligators were plentiful along the
railroad track; so these braves made war on those innocent creatures as their first
exetcise in war
Leaving Beaumont on boat for Sabine Pass, thence up that stream to a place
east of Orange, we landed on the Louisiana side. New Or,eans was the objective, one
rather New lberia -- that distance to walk. This
hundred and sixty miles -
accomplished, we gladly were soon afloat for the city. Here we encamped in a
warehouse to await the rail trip to Richmond Here at New Orleans was the first time I
ever heard "Dixie." Two little ltalian boys with violins played the air that was to be the
war cry, the classic, of the Confederacy and to go down the ages as long as music
attunes the soldie/s step or patrjotism calls to defenders of hearth and home.
A short stay at Knoxville, Tenn., where we saw General Zollicoffer for the first
and last time, as he fell at Fishing Creek early in the war. Then all aboard again for
Richmond, for the first time viewing across the James that historic place, ever dear to
the Confederate heart. Here we were incorporated into Company E, 4th Texas
as a name. We had
Regiment, and the Lone Star Guards became a thing of the past -
a uniform of gray. Captain Ryan, being a melchant of Waco, hadgone before
hostilities to New York and had the buttons of our jackets show in raised letters,
About the first sight we were treated to was the Yankee prisoners confined in
Libby Prison. These fellows were taken atthe Farst Battle of Manassas. Among them
was Congressman W. W. Corcoran, of New York, who. it was said, came out from
Washington in his buggy to see the rebels thrashed. The Corcoran Library was his
contribution to the great things at Washington.
After two months in training camp near Richmond, early in the fall of 1861
(November 20), the brigade was ordered to Join the Army of Northern Virginia, then
facing the Union army at Centerville. lt was given out that an engagement was
imminent. but this turned out to be a false alarm after we reached the line on the

-12-
The Lone Star Guards, Contd.
Potomac. We marched a great part of the way, and our position was on the right wing
of the army at Dumfries, some thirty miles down the line from Centerville.
Here we went inlo winter quarters and saw little bui the prosy camp life all that
winter of 1861-62. We were then under Gen. Joe Johnston. ln March (gth)wetookup
march to Yorktown, quite a change of base, where the Federal General Mcclellan
expected to either capture the rebel army cooped up in the peninsula, or compel its
retreat to the Chickahominy River, a stream bent around Richmond, some seven miles
from the Confederate capital.
On May 5, '1862, the retreat of our army from about Yorktown began, and here
the Texas brjgade was given - as the word came to the ranks - the post of honor -
that is to say, the post of danger - to be the rear guard of the army. But, after an all
day's march, as we passed through Williamsburg, another command took our place as
rear guard, and before any sign of pursuit by the enemy as far as we could see.
Several miles after this change, that same evening, the enemy gvertook and attacked
the force left behind, and here the bloody battle of Williamsburg took place. Thus we
escaped, unintentionally, a trial of arms with the enemy. As we were stiil in the
peninsula, we were hunied forward to meet an expected attack at Eltham's Landing,
where the enemy did disembark from his gunboats, and a small engagement took
place. lnstead of cutting off our retreat. they were too late. There I saw the first blood
shed in our brigade. After one day here the Federals betook themselves to their boats,
and our march was continued to the north side of the Chickahominy.
On May 30, our brigade was to "act the part" at the severe battle of Seven
Pines. Where again, after occupying the part of the line of battle assigned to us on and
along the York River Railroad, we were not engaged. All the fighting of this battle of
Seven Pines was a half mile or so to our left. However, here we had a scene. While
we were standing there awaiting orders, President Davis and Postmaster Generai
Reagan rode up in our rear, all unheralded At this juncture a member of our company,
one Fitzhugh, threw up his cap and hollowed: "Hurah for General Reagan!" Whento
the surprise of Fitzhugh, as well as the rest of us, a fusillade of musketry was
discharged by the Yankee troops lying opposite to us on the other side of the railroad.
As the enemy didn't take aim or didn't see us through the thick brush between, it was a
bloodless demonstration, with one exception. At the command for us to lie down, Sam
Chambers, a private at my side, hit the ground so hard that he stuck a stubble in his
chin. I saw him feeling of hischin and looking atthe blood. laskedSamif hewas
wounded, and he had to admit how it occuned. This was all the blood spilled by the
brigade at the battle of Seven Pines.
Returning to our camp, after wading in some deep water, it seemed miles the
way we went, allwas quiet again. Following this, onJune 11,1862,wewereordered
to march, and here began one of General Lee's admirable plans to deceive the enemy.
(General Johnston was disabled in the engagementjust mentioned and was
succeeded bythe immortal Lee.) lsaid orders to marchl We came back to the city and
entrained to the Shenandoah Valey to join Stonewall Jackson, this to make the
Federals believe it was another aim to capture Washington A few days there, and we
took up march back to Richmond by another route than we had come. Jackson was to
come with his army and attack simultaneously with General Lee to drive l\rcclellan out
of the position he held on the Chickahominy. This ruse of General Lee's was an
eminent success

-13-
The Lone Star Guards, Cont'd.
On our return by this circuitous route, on June 26, 1862, in the aftemoon, we
could hear the booming of cannon, which was the attack from the Richmond side of the
Chickahominy, at what was known as the battle of Mechanicsville, the first of the seven
days' battles. By night we were in the neighborhood, so to speak, of the battle field,
and were ordered to sleep on our arms The night was quiet, but the following day,
after being maneuvered all day, we had retreated to Powhite Creek, the Etream that
turned the wheels of Gaines's mill. Late in the evening the brigade was marching we
did not know where. A cannon ball came crashing through the trees and struck a few
steps ahead of our company with a terrific crash. Word came to us that it took off Jim
Smiley's head. Ihere was no halt at that. Soon we were wading through the mill pond
above the mill. On and uptohighground, where the field officers were in waiting.
Here was the Telegraph Road. On this road our army seemed to be forming for the
assault on the entrenched Federals
We were wheeled to the right and went a short distance, stopped, and were
lined up, as if on dress parade About seven o'clock P.l\rl., facing the west, eight
hundred yards in our front, the battle was and had been raging for hours, our forces
trying to dislodge Fitzjohn Porter from his strongly fortified position, having two or three
lines, one above the other, opposite the Confederate assaulting line.
Through the open field we began the charge to take the place of the line in our
front, to relieve them.
We had orders not to fire a gun, and when we got to our men lying flat on the
ground, I passed by a fellow who looked up, with such an expression of relief
overspreading his tacel Up he iumped and away he retreated I had no time to tum to
see him run.
Right here I fired, I believe, my first shot at a Yank, and in an instant came the
order to fix bayonets. I could see the Yanks begin to leave their lines and run, and this
was the occasion for a rebel yell. On and across the little branchlike creek the Texas
brigade followed the routed enemy By the time I got to where the enemy had been
holding the Confederate line for hours, I was struck down by a ball, a wound in the
head and another in quick succession in my left arm, shattering the bone near the
shoulder. llaywhere lfellforseveral hours. Later a comrade, Billy Dunklin, found me
and aided me to the field hospital in the rear.
When I was hit, the thought came, "l am killed " Then I became unconscious, I
don't know how long, till near when Billy foLrnd me.
This was Thursday night. The surgeon examined my wounds and said: "lf your
armhastocome off, itwill beatthe shoulderjoint. But,"hesaid,"l must go to worse
cases than yours," and departed I remained there without a dressing until Saturday
moming and was then put aboard an army wagon with a number of other wounded and
sent to Richmond, nine miles away overavery rocky road
We arived in Richmond the following l\ronday and were taken to the First
Baptist Church, which had been conveded into a hospital. My iacket was cut off and
the wound dressed
After some days a swelling in my neck below the right ear located the ball that
had knocked me over the week previous, and the surgeon had an easy operation
taking it out. I kept that leaden missile a long time, showing it to friends Wonderful to
tell, it was flat from the contact with my skull I still carry the scars in my neck, as well
as where it entered and glanced down into my neck. The other ball was not taken out
of my arm until the December following at Waco. Such was the surgery at the time.

14-
The Lone Star Guards, Cont'd.
What a wonde. gangrene did not take me off. On our way to Richmond in ihat jolting
wagon, Tom Cunningham, of Company F, overtook the wagon from the same field
hospital, walking to Richmond with a slight wound. A few days afterwa.ds he was a
victim of gangrene and died.
I was furloughed after a few weeks, October, 1862, and went to Marlin, Tex.. my
home, with my arm still in a sling I stayed in Texas untilthe spring of 1863 Although
not recovered from my arm wound, I started back with two or three recruits for our
company. which was now in Virginia. We went by stage from Waco to Shreveport and
through the l\,lississippi bottoms in canoes to Natchez. At Natchez our little band
volunteered to meet a Yankee raid through Mississippi. Ihe citizens expected the
raiders to come, but fortunately the raiders changed their course
From Natchez to Hazlehurst we traveled on the Mobile and Ohio Railroad and
had a glimpse of Grierson's work. The tracks were torn up and depots bumed.
Transportation was fumished us on to Chattanooga, and upon arrival there I went to my
siste/s, ldrs. Pope's, and rcsted, as my arm was still very painful I returned to my
company, encamped near Fredericksburg, in August, but was not well enough to
shoulder a musket, and Colonel Bains appointed me ordnance sergeant The company
had recently returned from Pennsylvania, having fought at Gettysburg. Here I saw my
comrads barefoot after their march into Pennsylvania
While lwas with the 4th serving as ordnance sergeant, our brigade and, in fact,
Longstreet's whole command, was ordered to Georgia, where, on September 19 and
20, the great battle of Chickamauga was fought Our brigade, again in the thickest of
the fight, lost heavily.
I was with my ordnance wagon in the rear while this battle was fought Here
General Hood was wounded the second day, and was brought out by our ordnance
train on a litter I walked up to see him, and his great blue eyes looked up to me as
much as to say, "l know your face." He was our colonel at the organization and with us
in all our marches and engagements mentioned, afterwards being promoted to take
Joe Johnston's place before Atlanta This was the last time I ever saw our beloved
general. The Federal army, defeated, fell back from the Chrckamauga to Chattanooga,
and for a couple of months we stayed there, having Rosecrans cooped up at
Chattanooga.
We next moved to Knoxville East Tennessee, and after some fighting there, we
moved farther up in East Tennessee and went into winier quaders at Morristown. We
built our log cabins and remained quietly there, and in March 1864 came orders for
our relurn to Virginia to rejoin Lee's army of Northern Virginia At this time, I shouldered
a musket again after eighteen months off the finng line
The spring campaign was to open on the Rapidan, where Grant had assembled
his hosts, 120,00C strong for his "On to Richmond."
From the local newspaper of 16 Sep 1969:
THE WORLD. MY NEIGHBORS AND ME
by lrvin S. lngram
The distinguished Ganison Famlly of early Carroll County was the subject of a
letter I received this week frgm a native of this county, Dr. James C. Bonner of
Milledgeville who has recently retired from the chairmanship of the history department
at Georgia College there. I want to share this with you just as he wrote it:
Old residents of Carrollton may wonder as I am just what has become of the old
Ganison family cemetery which once lay on the west side of Hay's Mill Road approximately
where the main entrance to the new apartment complex is now being
constructed. Fifty years ago this cemetery contained several markers and coverstones,
one of the former being of ltalian marble. The site today has been completely
obliterated by the bulldozer.
The old Garrison house stood about one hundred yards farther down the road
from the cemetery. James Freeborn Garrison constructed this house before the Civil
War, on the high bluff overlooking Buffalo Creek. Later known as the Will Hay
residence, it was in time remodeled and renovated, but it stood on its originai
foundations. lt is now being demolished. Garrison's wife, Abigail, was the sister of
Thomas Bonner whose house still stands on the campus of West Georgia College
about a quarter of a mile lo the north. The oldest Ganison son, Caleb, moved to Texas
in '1851 where he became a merchant, planter, and lawyer, and represented his county
in the Texas Senate. He was followed to lexas by his father in 1866, and eight years
later by a kinsman, Patterson G. Garrison. Apparently the last of the Garisons to leave
Carroll County for Texas was Andrew J. Ganison who in 1880 resigned f.om the city
council of Carrollton and depa.ted for Rusk County, Texas. The "Canoll County Times"
of June '14, '1878, noted that James Ganison, whose family then lived in Henderson,
Texas, visited Canollton on his way home from the University of Virginia where he had
studied law.
Patterson G. Garrison operated a drygoods store on the north side of the public
square in Carollton where, in 1873, he constructed the first masonry building in the
iown. Still standing today and known as the lvlandeville Building, this structure once
served as the Carollton City Hall and housed the town's first fire department. ln 1864
Patterson Ganison resigned his commission in the Confederate army and became tax
assessor for the county. His son Willre Ganison was killed at the battle of Seven Pines
in 1862 while servinq as Orderly Sergeant in the company commanded by his uncle,
William E. Curtis. His death came only a short time after he had departed from the
classrooms of the Canollton Masonic lnstitute where he had shown great intellectual
promise. At the time of his death his commanding officer said of him that "No scientific
attainment was too deep or too high for his mental grasp."
It was Wllie Ganison's younger brother, George Pierce Ganison, who became
the first of Canoll's sons to achieve distinction in academic life and scholarship. Born in
the county in 1853, he attended the l\rasonic lnstitute and then entered Sewanee. He
studied at the University of Edinburgh from 1879 to 1881 and in 1896 he was awarded
the Ph.D. degree from the University of Chicago. Earlier he had risen to the chairmanship
of the Department of History at the University of Texas where he bec€me a noted
author of books on the history of Texas and the Southwest. Ganison Hall, which today
houses the Department of History on the campus at Austin, is a memorial to this son of

Canoll County. But the distinguished Garrison name is no longer on the land which
bore and sustained this family during the formative years of Carroll County's history.
The last lithograph apparently has been buried by the bulldozer.
Dr. lrvin S. lngram was the first President of West Georgia College in Carrollton,
Georgia. Upon his retirement he wrote editorials for the Times Free Press and the
Georoian from 1960 until 1974. Dr. Anne Gayle Ingram has completed a collection of
her father's editorials. This collection will be bound and made available to libraries and
interested individuals. While iodexing this collection for Dr. lngram. ldiscovered the
preceding editorial. Dr. Anne lngram has given her permission for the use of it in the
Carroll County Genealogical Quarterly. Do any of our readers know who was buried in
the graves, and if the bodies were relocated Local informants tel! me that they were
Bill Entrekin writes, "l was very well pleased with the work of the Society this past year
and the copies of the Quarterly that I received were excellent My complirnents to the
editorial staff."
Gertrude Stone writes, "Your Society and its many members have been a great help to
me over the years and I am looking forward to another good year in my Family
Research. I have had excellent results on my Culpepper line, have them back to year
1600 in England. Also my research on my Gray line has been very rewarding. On the
other lines I haven't been so Iucky. Could definitely use some help on my Walker line,
