St. Jerome’s University students raise an unprecedented $19,704.77 (and counting) to beat cancer.
WATERLOO, Ont. (Friday, April 8, 2011) -- Friday, April 1, 2011 marked the fifth
Relay for Life event at St. Jerome’s University. More than 170 St. Jerome’s University students
showed that they can truly make a difference through their participation in this year’s Relay for
Life.
The week of March 28 to April 1 saw a massive series of online donations that totaled more
than $1,000 per day. This unprecedented success exceeded all expectations and is a true
testament to the amazing sense of community at St. Jerome’s University. To further entice
students and donors, students Sebastien Kundra, Andrew Lessard, and Bess Mitchell
volunteered to shave their heads at the $5,000, $10,000 and $15,000 milestones,
respectively. Other students also made special efforts to increase pledges. Sarah Harris
donated a length of her hair to be made into a wig, while several gentlemen were willing to
have their legs waxed at a cost of $10 per strip. These courageous individuals included Sean
Maloney, Jordan Melfi, Barrett LaFortune, Chimere Ukasoanya, Pat Rielly, Mitchell McDade,
Richard Henkel, Steven Jennings, and Ian Sherman.
In celebration of cancer survivors and in tribute to the lives of loved ones who have died of
cancer, luminaries were blessed at a midnight service in St. Jerome’s Notre Dame Chapel and
placed along the walkway in Alumni Court.
The event was made possible through talented SJU student leaders Rachel Bell, Lee Follis,
Kathryn French, Dan Martell, Brianne McDougall, Michael Phillips, Rebecca Ruccurean, Roxanne
Tremaine and Rachel Wright. A special thank you to event Chair, Kristina Bartold, for her hard
work, dedication and leadership in bringing this event to life.
