EXPLANATION OF CODES IN ROSTER/PMA SECTION 

Ordained Pastoral Ministry 

Ordained ministers serve with hearts filled with love and courage, to offer the hope of the sacraments and to lead the 

proclamation of the Gospel. 

Chaplain 

Some pastors, after an initial congregational call of three years, will serve as chaplains. 

Ministries in Chaplaincy, Pastoral Counseling, and Clinical Education reach directly into the primary social structures 

and institutions of our world. As they encounter people in the midst of these everyday settings, those who serve in 

specialized pastoral care seek to extend the love of God in Jesus Christ to persons at the point of their deepest need. 

AIM – Associate in Ministry 

Partners in ministry, these leaders are commissioned for ministry to equip and enable others in their Christian lives. 

They serve in congregations and other ministries of the ELCA. 

DM – Diaconal Minister 

These consecrated leaders model servant life and seek further to connect the church and the world. They serve in 

congregations as well as organizations where their faith guides their work. 

Deaconess 

A Deaconess is consecrated for service in the context of the church’s mission to proclaim the Gospel, to relate the 

Gospel to human need in every situation, and to extend the ministry of the Gospel to all the world. 

OLFC – On Leave From Call 

On Leave From Call is a designation for rostered leaders who are in between calls, and discerning their next arena of 

ministry. 

Spec. Min. – Specialized Ministry 

Interim 

During a pastoral vacancy, for the good of the congregation, the bishop may appoint an interim pastor, who is called by 

the synod council to interim ministry. Some of our interim pastors have received additional training in intentional interim 

ministry. All of our interim pastors are charged with helping a congregation move toward greater health as they prepare 

to call their next pastor. 

TEEM – Theological Education for Emerging Ministries 

Theological Education for Emerging Ministries is an avenue for the ELCA to educate and equip pastors who are needed 

for specific ministries which require unique gifts and/or aptitudes. Leaders for ethnic specific ministries, and more 

recently, leaders for rural congregations for which we do not have an ordained pastor available, often qualify as TEEM 

sites. A TEEM candidate is being educated for ordination while they are serving as a pastoral leader. 

PMA – Parish Ministry Associate 

Parish Ministry Associates are lay people who have engaged in a prescribed program of theological education and 

discernment in this synod, and are committed to living out their calling in their daily lives. Most are leaders in their own 

congregations. At the discretion of the bishop, a PMA may be asked to serve as a pastoral leader in an otherwise 

vacant congregation.
