8 THANKS – - to the PVA for all the wish list items requested by teachers for their classrooms. The number and variety of items is impressive. PVA’s donation of talent, time, and treasure makes all the difference in the quality of programs that can be offered at CCHS. Many, many thanks from all the students, faculty, and staff! - to the students, staff, parents, and alumni who participated in the Pax Christi woodcutting day in Mingo County. The Catholic sisters who benefited from the service were most appreciative. - to Cindy Persily and the PVA Shamrock Sharing group for its thoughtful and well organized support of members of the CCHS community. - to all of our fall coaches for their commitment, poise, and skill in helping our teams achieve notable successes. - to athletes, coaches, team parents, parents, and fans who work hard to ensure that CCHS teams are class acts, representing themselves and our school community so beautifully. - to Tana Mounts from the WV Higher Education Policy Commission who gave a very informative presentation to our parents on college financial aid. - to CCHS teachers for spending a very long but productive day offering parent conferences and to parents who took advantage of this opportunity. - to PVA for providing soups, salads, and desserts for faculty and staff during the parent-teacher conferences. John Rice - Immaculate Conception (Montgomery/Boomer); Fr. Joshua Stevens - Sacred Heart (Pt. Pleasant); Fr. Chris Turner - St. Agnes (Kanawha City); Fr. Joseph Tuscan, O.F.M., Cap - Holy Trinity (Nitro) and Christ the King (Dunbar); Fr. Leon Liemet, O.F.M., Cap. (retired) - to all who supported the Manna Meal outreach effort, contributing 170 lbs of canned meat and 86 pounds of miscellaneous food items. - to Bethany Woomer, CCHS alumna, who spoke to the anatomy students about medical school. Bethany is a former graduate who is a resident in pediatrics in Louisville. - to all the members of the CCHS community who stepped forward to make the A-AA State Soccer Tournament, hastily moved to Charleston, such a resounding success. SSAC staff, coaches, players, and fans were all impressed with the efficient, effective, and professional operation of all aspects of the tournament. And all done in less than a week! - to all who supported the high school baseball team’s spaghetti dinner at Paterno’s at the Park on December 2. A special thanks to restaurant manager, Nikki Paterno (CCHS 1995), for helping make the dinner a delicious and successful fundraiser. Lynn Golden and Annette Cable are commended for their work in organizing this event, as well as the team’s “No Bake Bake Sale” in November. CONGRATULATIONS – - to Kathryn Wantlin for her 3 rd victory in the CCHS spelling bee. Mandy Spiegel was runner-up in this 244-word marathon! - to Hannah Gallian for being named to the Class A Volleyball All-State First Team and to Simone Assaley for being named to the Class A All-State Second Team! - to HS cheerleaders for placing 4th out of 9 teams at Regional Competition. - to MS girls soccer team for winning the county championship, defeating John Adams 1-0. - to Hannah Gacek for winning the middle school cross country championship two years in a row! Hannah and Lia Preston were both named to the 1 st Team All County! - to history teacher extraordinaire Scott Welch who completed his 20 th season as CCHS cross country coach! - to the HS girls soccer team for an excellent season, culminating with play in the AA-A State tournament. Kudos to Payton Mullen, named to 2 nd team all state and to Jenny Borman for her honorable mention recognition. - to the high school boys’ soccer team which won its fourth straight AA-A State Championship defeating Fairmont Senior 5-0. Additional honors include WV High School Soccer Coaches Association selections: 1st team all state- Sam Revercomb, Adam Fox, Luke Smith, Domenic Cipollone; 2nd Team all-state- Mitchell Stanley; William Scriptunas; Honorable Mention- Tanner Whipkey; Player of the Year---Sam Revercomb; Coach of the Year---Sam Fox; WV Sportswriters All State Selections: 1st team all-state - Sam Revercomb (Captain), Adam Fox, Domenic Cipollone; 2nd Team all-state: Joey Trupo; Honorable Mention all-state - Luke Smith, Mitchell Stanley. Team honors/statistics include: 1) the first boys' soccer team in WV to win 4 consecutive titles; 2) #1 in the State of West
9 Virginia regardless of school size according to the WV Soccer Association and CBS Sports/MaxPreps; 3) #11 in the Nation according to CBS Sports/MaxPreps; 4) #8 in the Region according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and the highest ranked WV team in the poll; 5) according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America was the only WV team receiving votes in their national poll; 6) 55 games and counting without a loss-4th longest streak in the nation; 7) recognized by the Army National Guard and MaxPreps.com as one of ten high schools across the nation as an honoree for the lst Annual Boys MaxPreps Boys Soccer Tour of Champions. - to the 2011-12 HS boys’ soccer team for receiving the Team Academic Award from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, the first time the CCHS team has received this recognition. To qualify for the award, the high school team must have a minimum grade point average of 3.25 for the entire academic year. The team’s GPA was an astounding 3.94! FAMILY TRIPS, APPOINTMENTS, ETC. -- Please avoid taking students out of school for vacations, family trips, appointments, etc. If students miss school for any reason (including illness), it is their responsibility to find out what they missed. The policies for making up work are included in the Parent-Student Handbook. If your child is ill or will miss school for any reason, please notify the school office by 8:30 a.m. In addition, at the end of the semester students will have to stay after school to make up any time missed during excessive absences/tardies. SCHOOL CLOSINGS/DELAYS DUE TO SNOW/ICE – –Although some of us may be holding out for a mild winter, all of us must be prepared to deal with whatever comes. Here’s a brief reminder of the CCHS weather policy. Remember that school closings and delays are also announced on the CCHS website and tweeted through cchsnews. 1) CCHS/SHGS will NOT follow ANY of the Kanawha County Schools’ weather-related procedures. 2) Families will need to connect to the CCHS website or listen to the radio/television for changes to CCHS/SHGS schedules. The following stations will be notified by 6:15 a.m. if there are changes to be made: WV Public Radio, WCHS, WCHS-TV, WSAZ-TV, V100, 96.1, Super 102, WBES, WKAZ, and WQBE. 3) If no announcements are made for CCHS/SHGS, classes will be held on the regular schedule. 4) If a two-hour delay is announced, classes will start promptly at 10 a.m. The building will not open until 9:30 to give staff time to get to school. Please do not drop off your children before 9:30! 5) As always, if you cannot get your child to school for health or safety reasons, notify the school. CALENDAR FOR 2012-13 –Exams must be taken on scheduled exam days. At the end of each semester, students must make up time missed for illness or other non-school related reasons (more than 5 absences per semester in any class) in order for class credit to be granted.
