Spring: Change, Renewal, and Growth
Spring! That time of year when the
scenery changes, the leaves come
out and nature’s transition is in the
air! Renewal and growth…and so it is
with the Carolinas District of Kiwanis.
We had a great MidYear Conference,
and International President Dave
Curry was effusive in his praise of the
event, our projects, our focus, and
our district. Armed with that burst of
energy and support, we now look
ahead to the second half of our calendar
with so much opportunity for
growth…in our clubs, and above all,
in our service. From now all the way
to the end of September, I urge all of
you to redouble your club’s focus on
growth, improvement, and recruitment
of new members to plant the
seeds of more service to the needs of
our children .
As you may have heard, there is
change ahead — a proposal from the
District Board to restructure our governing
organization, shifting to a
board of Nine Regional Trustees serving
three year terms focused on better
district support of Lt. Governors,
divisions, clubs, members and their
service in the Carolinas.
This initiative will be on the ballot for
the convention’s delegate body in
Winston-Salem this August; however
the concept is not new.
For more than two years, district
leaders have studied, through a series
of two committees, what governing
organizations would best serve
the district. Headed by Past Governor
Russ Wagner, the current team of
leaders and the EAC reviewed the experience
and outcomes of several
other districts that have moved to
this model, all with positive results.
The most important of these outcomes
are that Lt. Governors are better
supported and focused on service,
clubs, growth and members, and
their service. And the governance
process in those cases has been more
strategic and effective.
I will not attempt to describe the detailed
changes in this article, as, beginning
shortly after publication of
this Kiwanian, the district website will
provide background materials and
specific information on the restructuring
proposal, and offer any member
the opportunity to air questions and
comments.
Our goal is to provide you with the
opportunity to openly field questions,
including a “letters to the editor”
process. We will do our best to dialogue
with members, clubs and others
about the restructuring—and we will
respond as efficiently as possible.
As you might have sensed, I am one
of those who has been involved in the
study of this change from the outset.
I am in favor of it because the time
has come to plant the seeds for a
more effective board, and an organization
that can more effectively guide
our organization toward better growth
and service. That said—we want to
hear from you as you may help us to
prepare for the deliberations in
Winston-Salem. Stay tuned for the
announcement of this publication in
CDNews.
A couple of last thoughts: As you
should know by now, our own International
Trustee and Past Governor,
Webster James, will run for International
Vice President at the KI Convention
in Orlando! Come with us and
support Webster’s run! Register for
the convention via the KI website
and, most importantly, work within
every club to send a
full slate of delegates
to Orlando. Yes, it’s
spring and an election
year!
Press On!
