Club News... GREENSBORO, NC— January 16, 2008 On the count of three, Courtney Rodriguez, Joshua Furchess and Diego Esparza raced across the gym at W.C. Falkener Elementary School. With smiles almost as big as the gym itself, these prekindergartners ran with a different spring in their step, courtesy of brandnew shoes provided by the Kiwanis Club of Greensboro. Eighty-six deserving students at Falkener Elementary were fitted with new shoes at the school January 8-11. With the help of a club volunteer, each child received a new pair of socks—donated by 86 Children Receive New Shoes Kiwanian Bill Hervey— and a personal fitting of his or her own pair of shoes. The shoes left smiles not only on the students but school administrators and club members as well. “This program has absolutely touched my heart,” notes Andrea Neese, chairperson of the Kiwanis Hands-On Committee, which coordinates the Shoes for Children campaign. “For some of these children, this could be the first pair of brandnew shoes in their lives. Some are wearing second - or third-generation shoes from their older siblings, and some don’t even have socks. I love this program for the way it touches lives in this community, and the children are so grateful.” “This is a way of giving forward, and it warms the heart to see these gifts to children who may not be able to help themselves. This program also offers these students an opportunity to see new faces with a smile and the chance to say thanks for these gifts to us” notes Falkener Principal Edwina Monroe. Such civic/business partnerships, says Monroe, are vitally important to a school such as Falkener, providing needed assistance not always readily available. “We need m ore businesses to come and to sow a seed,” she adds. The Shoes for Children program is in its second year, notes Neese. “You can credit Dick Kern (immediate past president of the Kiwanis Club of Greensboro) for thinking this up; I’m just the servant,” she says. Money for the shoe program comes directly from club members, many of them donating anonymously. More than $900 was raised for this year’s program, Neese says, and since several Kiwanians tu- tor at Falkener, a relationship with the school already existed. Dr. Pat Wallace, Falkener’s social worker, helped to identify children who could benefit from new shoes, adds Neese. Helping with the fittings, Dr. Wallace made certain that LaRoss Nickerson received a little added attention when he entered the gym for his new shoes. After being seated, Neese presented Nickerson with a pair of girl’s pink shoes—a color she thought he would love. Smiling and burying his head in his hands at the prank, Nickerson then grinned broadly when he tried on the pair of stylish tennis shoes actually intended for him. As evidenced by Neese and all those around, smiles were certainly “fitting” throughout the day. Warning: Don’t throw away tax-exempt status Beginning in 2008, some organizations in the United States that were not required to file tax returns with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS)—including many Kiwanis clubs—will have a new filing requirement: the new electronic postcard Form 990-N. Small, tax-exempt organizations whose gross receipts normally are $25,000 or less are not required to file IRS forms 990 or 990-EZ. But the Pension Protection Act of 2006 requires these organizations to file the new electronic form annually. Failure to file for three consecutive years could result in revocation of the organization’s tax-exempt status. The standard information the IRS will require when filing the electronic Form 990-N is the name of your Kiwanis club, mailing address, Web site address (if applicable), employer identification number (EIN), annual tax period date and a statement that annual gross receipts are still normally $25,000 or less. Because Kiwanis International operates on a fiscal year (October 1-September 30), the first filing will be for the tax period that begins October 1, 2007 and ends September 30, 2008, with a filing due date of February 15, 2009. Many Kiwanis clubs may already have received a notice from the IRS regarding this new requirement. If your club hasn’t been notified, watch for updates on the Kiwanis Web site or you can refer to the IRS Web site to see if the new ruling applies to your club. 8 Carolina Kiwanian
District Project Update Exciting things are happening for The Kiwanis Amphitheatre Project! Burnette Service a District Campaign underway to Medal name a major outdoor feature of the 10 acre educational campus of The Health Adventure in western North Carolina – and honor Past Distinguished Governor David Burnette on site. Their new facility projects to serve over 200,000 visitors a year – and Kiwanis is a partner in their mission to serve children! In December, Carol Burnette was pleased to award the Gold Medal to Black Mountain, NC President Dan Reilly (shown pictured with wife Jean and Carol Burnette) for his support of The Kiwanis Amphitheatre Project….the first official medal presentation to any club in the Carolinas District. The First “David R. Burnette Service Medals” Awarded for The Kiwanis Amphitheatre Project The Committee has been busy! Through December, the project has raised over $47,000 in pledges and contributions towards its goal of $250,000. Momentum: Science and Health Adventure Park (the new name for The Health Adventure’s new campus) is working toward a groundbreaking targeted for Fall of 2008, with completion anticipated in 2010. Pledge now to support this project at the Bronze $500, Silver $1000, or Gold Medal $1500 levels (pledge can be over two years), and be a part of the creation of the new educational science and discovery park that will play an important part of Kiwanis’ mission to serve our children!
