FOOD DRIVE
Prairie Winds Elementary
will join in with the other
Pueblo West elementary
schools to participate in the annual
Pueblo West Canned Food
Drive. Our drive will run from
November 9th until November
13th. Students are asked to
bring in non-perishable food to
donate to our community. We
do ask that students not bring in
glass containers. Donated food
will be used to make Thanksgiving
baskets for families in
the Pueblo West area. This is a
great way to show the life skills
of friendship and caring. Help
your child think of creative
ways to gather food for this
drive (ask relatives, raise
money, or use allowance to purchase
food, etc.).
As an added bonus, the classroom
that brings in the most
items will get to make and EAT
pumpkin pies with our principal
Mrs. Russell and our counselor
Mrs. Farbo. Please consider
donating to this very worthwhile
community cause.

SEASON CHANGE
The season of shorts is over. We
suggest that you do not send children
to school in shorts until after Daylight
Savings Time begins in April. Girls
may continue to wear skorts, skirts,
and jumpers (we would suggest with
tights). Thank you!

• We encourage all parents to become members
of the Prairie Winds PTA. The next
PTA meeting will be November 11th at
3:45 p.m..
• If you are interested in volunteering at
Prairie Winds, please contact your child’s
teacher.
• Children can be brought to school at 8:15.
There will not be any supervision before
8:15, so please adhere to this drop-off time.
• Please do not send medication to school
with your child. If your child needs to take
medicine at school, please complete the
necessary paperwork, signed by your doctor,
and have an adult bring the medication
to school. This includes items such as
cough drops and medicated lip balms.
School Safety Procedures
As a way of keeping parents aware
of some of the precautions that are
being taken regarding safety in our
school, we would like to review the following
safety procedures that are in
effect:
• All exterior doors are locked when
students and staff are present
except for the main front door and
gym doors during lunch time.
• Entryway doors will also be locked.
This means that you must come to
the office to sign in and to get a
Visitor Badge, staff has been advised
to stop you and escort you to
the office if you are not wearing a
badge.
• Emergency and crisis plans have
been reviewed with staff and students.
The three types of drills
we do regularly are fire drills, lock
down drills, and tornado drills.
• We are asking for donations of old
cell phones and chargers for each
of our classrooms. All cell phones,
if they are charged, can be used to
call 911 even if thy are not activated
by a cell phone company
Twister Tidbits
• School begins at 8:40. We ask that each
child be here and in the classroom, ready to
learn, by 8:40. If your child is late, please
come in to the office and sign him or her in
as tardy.
• The parent loop is open and supervised
from 8:15-8:40 a.m. and from 3:20-3:35
p.m. All other times, please park in the
main lot and come in to the building.
• DO NOT allow children to
cross the parking lot by themselves.
• All students should be in complete school
uniforms daily. Students who are not
dressed in uniform will be sent to the office
to call home for the uniform to be brought
to school. A complete uniform consists of
the Prairie Winds shirt with school logo
and navy or khaki twill bottoms. Sweatpants
and denim are not acceptable.
• It is extremely important that your
emergency contact sheet is up-todate
with any phone or address
changes that you may have. This is
the only way we are able to contact
you in the event of an emergency.
As always, information is transmitted
through local radio and TV stations as
well as the District 70 website,
www.district70.org for emergency situations
as well as weather issues.

Prairie Winds PTA will be
collecting Box Tops for Education
and Campbell's Soup labels
to help raise money for our
school. Please collect and send
your Box Tops for Education
and Campbell's Soup labels.
Box Tops and soup labels can
be turned into your child’s
teacher.
D.A.R.E. — We are almost there!
Thanks to those who have made donations.
We are still short of the necessary
funds to finance the school-wide
D.A.R.E. program and the 5th grade
D.A.R.E. graduation. There is still time
to help out. Please see Ms. Renfro if you
would like to make a donation.

Fall Weather
As the days begin to feel
more like fall, it is important
to remember to send
children to school dressed
for the weather. Students
will be participating in outdoor
P.E. activities, and they will be going
outside for recess. We want children to
be able to enjoy the fall days, but they
often need a jacket, a hat, and gloves for
these outdoor activities.

COUNSELOR’S CORNER
As the School Counselor, I look forward to serving all students
using a comprehensive guidance and counseling program that
contributes to positive academic success and a safe learning environment.
I will be presenting a bully-proofing program to help
children learn effective intervention strategies against bullying. I
will also be working with a program called Kelso’s Choice, a curriculum
designed to teach conflict management skills to elementary
school children. At Prairie Winds Elementary, our goal is to teach
children positive ways to deal with difficult situations. I will be
presenting various other character education programs throughout
the year as well. I look forward to a very successful school year.

Components of Reading
featuring . . .
Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear, produce,
and manipulate the sounds of language.
When children are able to segment words (break
them apart sound by sound) and put them back
together (blend), they are more successful readers.
Here are ways for you to build phonemic
awareness at home:
• Say a compound word and ask your child to
tell you the two words that make it up
(doghouse = dog/house)
• Take turns breaking words apart into syllables
(ten-nis, com-pu-ter)
• Give a word and ask your child to supply
rhyming words
• Say a word and have your child segment it
into individual sounds (rock = /r/ /
o/ /k/)
• Ask your child to blend sounds together
when you break them apart (/f/ /
r/ /o/ /g/ = frog)
• Have your child repeat a string of unrelated
words to strengthen auditory sequencing
(cat, snow, watermelon, pencil)
The goal is to help your child hold
more words in auditory memory so
that when he segments words
while reading, he can hold the
chunks of words long enough in
auditory memory to blend the
chunks together.
