Paediatric & Adolescent Unit<br />

Compris<strong>in</strong>g 19 beds, the Paediatric and Adolescent unit<br />

accepts children aged 1 week to 18 years of age. The<br />

Unit admits up to 200 children per month from a variety<br />

of sources, emergency, consultant rooms, <strong>in</strong>ter-hospital<br />

transfers, and outpatients. The Unit provides a<br />

comprehensive range of acute care and outpatient<br />

services <strong>in</strong> addition to community based programs<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g hospital familiarization for Pre School children<br />

via our “Hello Hospital” program.<br />

Ballarat Health Services<br />

Ballarat Health Services is the largest regional health<br />

service <strong>in</strong> the Grampians region and the pr<strong>in</strong>cipal<br />

referral hospital. Ballarat Health Services admits <strong>in</strong><br />

The Centre for Nurs<strong>in</strong>g & Health Education offers a <strong>Post</strong><br />

<strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>Diploma</strong> <strong>in</strong> Nurs<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Practice</strong> <strong>in</strong> conjunction<br />

with the University of Melbourne <strong>in</strong> the streams of<br />

critical care, emergency nurs<strong>in</strong>g and paediatrics. It also<br />

offers a <strong>Graduate</strong> Certificate/<strong>Diploma</strong> of Nurs<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>Practice</strong> (Perioperative) <strong>in</strong> conjunction with Deak<strong>in</strong><br />

University. The Centre for Nurs<strong>in</strong>g & Health Education<br />

also offers programs <strong>in</strong> a number of key speciality areas<br />

of nurs<strong>in</strong>g practice and conducts regular specialised<br />

short courses and study days.<br />

Structure of the Course<br />

Course Aims:<br />

To enable registered Division 1 nurses to ga<strong>in</strong> a broad<br />

paediatric knowledge base enabl<strong>in</strong>g them to effectively<br />

plan and care for children and their families.<br />

To provide an academic and cl<strong>in</strong>ical environment which<br />

supports the professional development of Division 1<br />

nurses toward specialised paediatric nurs<strong>in</strong>g practice.<br />

Course Duration/Employment:<br />

Course is of 12 months duration commenc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

January of each year (<strong>in</strong>corporat<strong>in</strong>g rostered annual<br />

leave). Participants will be employed at 0.84 EFT with<br />

a contract for employment for duration of the course.<br />

Theoretical Component:<br />

The University of Melbourne adm<strong>in</strong>isters the theoretical<br />

component of the course. Ballarat Health Services<br />

provides a strong supportive l<strong>in</strong>k challeng<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

student’s theoretical knowledge <strong>in</strong> the cl<strong>in</strong>ical sett<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

The theoretical program is completed <strong>in</strong> one academic<br />

year.<br />

Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Component:<br />

The cl<strong>in</strong>ical component of the course is undertaken <strong>in</strong><br />

the Paediatric unit of Ballarat Health Services with<br />

specific objectives and assessments as set by the<br />

University of Melbourne. The Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Nurse Educator<br />

provides structured cl<strong>in</strong>ical tutorials, worksheets, daily<br />

bedside cl<strong>in</strong>ical teach<strong>in</strong>g and progressive, dynamic<br />

assessment methods <strong>in</strong> order for the student to achieve<br />

cl<strong>in</strong>ical performance.<br />

Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Supervision & Assessments<br />

Cl<strong>in</strong>ical supervision, assessment and plann<strong>in</strong>g is<br />

undertaken by the Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Nurse Educator – <strong>Paediatrics</strong><br />

who is supernumerary to paediatric staff. The<br />

Educator’s role is to support, mentor and facilitate the<br />

student’s cl<strong>in</strong>ical program and educational<br />

development.<br />

Formal cl<strong>in</strong>ical appraisal and assessment of competency<br />

skills are undertaken throughout the course <strong>in</strong><br />

accordance with University of Melbourne guidel<strong>in</strong>es.<br />

Cl<strong>in</strong>ical assessments focus on the acquisition,<br />

understand<strong>in</strong>g and demonstration of cl<strong>in</strong>ical skills <strong>in</strong><br />

specialised areas of paediatrics.
