<strong>Introduction</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>Clinician</strong> <strong>Performed</strong> <strong>Neonatal</strong> <strong>Ultrasound</strong><br />
This unit is designed <strong>to</strong> cover the theoretical and practical curriculum for<br />
basic imaging of the neonatal heart and brain.<br />
Learners should have completed the ASUM Physics Image<br />
Optimisation unit or accredited equivalent course.<br />
Recognised either through attendance at a 2 day ASUM <strong>Introduction</strong> <strong>to</strong><br />
<strong>Neonatal</strong> <strong>Ultrasound</strong> course or by training within an ASUM recognised<br />
Hospital <strong>Neonatal</strong> Department.<br />
Learners are required <strong>to</strong> perform supervised ultrasound scans with<br />
documentation in a logbook.<br />
Course Objectives<br />
Scanning the Neonate<br />
On completing this unit, delegates will be able <strong>to</strong>:<br />
Understand and appreciate the needs of an infant during scanning.<br />
Understand and appreciate the infection risks of scanning.<br />
Understand and appreciate the optimal choice of probes and settings for neonatal<br />
scanning.<br />
Confidently acquire normal images of the infant heart and brain.<br />
Demonstrate an understanding of the normal ana<strong>to</strong>mical structure of the infant heart as it<br />
relates <strong>to</strong> standard echocardiographic windows.<br />
Demonstrate an understanding of normal infant cranial ana<strong>to</strong>my<br />
Understand the common conventions of neonatal scanning and competently record a<br />
series of images <strong>to</strong> clearly demonstrate normal ana<strong>to</strong>my.<br />
Competently interpret ultrasound findings in relation <strong>to</strong> clinical scenarios.<br />
