The Chipman Report
November 4, 2011
Have you ever heard of a Growth Mindset vs. a Fixed Mindset Well, some of the recent work we have been doing
involves research on just how impactful these mindsets are on students and school. These mindsets are usually
established at home or in schools unwillingly or by mistake. It is all about what we say to our children that sets their
minds to believe in learning and growing or becoming so fixed on can and cannot. If you are interested in learning
more about Growth Mindsets and what you as a parent can do to help, please email me and ask for the Growth
Mindset Article. It will truly change how you speak with your children; it did me.
Sincerely,
Mr. Brown
Check it Out
It seems that kids are spending an increasing amount of time with TV, computer games, iPads, and smart
phones. As a result, there is an emerging “app gap” – affluent children are more likely to use mobile
educational games while lower-income children are more likely to have televisions in their bedrooms.
“The app gap is a big deal and a harbinger of the future,” says James Steyer of Common Sense Media. “It’s the
beginning of an important shift, as parents increasingly are handing their iPhones to their 2-year old kid as a
shut-up toy. And parents who check their e-mail three times on the way to the bus stop are constantly modeling
that behavior, so it’s only natural the kids want to use mobile devices too.”
Parent Conferences
November 21 st
12:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.
Teachers will contact you to establish a time slot for you and your child if it is determined that there is a
need for a conference for your child.
If you desire to conference even if you are not contacted, please call the school and ask to speak to each
grade level team leader.
