Fatherhood Is Sacred Program Update Submitted By: Shaun Guthrie Employment & Training is pleased to announce that four participants recently completed the 12-week Fatherhood Is Sacred program. The basis of the program covered the Sacredness of being a father, the principles all fathers must live by, and the importance of the Native Alaskan/Native American heritage and how it applied to fathers in the past and how it applies now. The program defines a successful Fatherhood Foundation in five aspects of life: Creator, Choice, Teachable, Wisdom, and Service. During the 12 weeks we identified the importance of character, integrity, Order vs. Chaos, power of choice, impact of vision in our relationships, importance of truth, knowledge/experience/courage, and service. Aside from the curriculum, we also held family fun activity nights. This was one of the more important aspects of the program, getting fathers, spouses, and children together to play for a couple hours a week. Some of our activities included: swimming, hiking, games, fishing, and other subsistence activities. We are proud to have sponsored a community picnic for tribal citizens on June 15th, which has been proclaimed National Native American Responsible Fatherhood Day. The picnic was held at Twin Lakes and had a great turnout with fathers working the grills and gift bags for all l the kids. E&T’s Fatherhood Is Sacred Program started its new cycle of workshops on Thursday, June 20th and all are welcome to attend the meetings. Angoon Head Start Graduation Submitted By: Reanna Kookesh-Booth Congratulations to our Angoon Head Start graduates! On May 9, 2013, eight blueberries graduated and are heading off to Kindergarten. We have eight cranberries staying with Head Start for one more year and eight new applicants for next school year. 8
Community Visits to Seattle and Petersburg Submitted By: Employment & Training On March 10, 2013, Employment and Training (E&T) Division Director Georgia Finau and Training Caseworker Barbara Taug traveled to Seattle, Washington to obtain information from colleges and vocational training centers. They toured the campus facilities of Everest College, Cortiva Institute of Massage, ITT Technical Institute, and Gene Juarez of Northgate to name a few. Everest College Visit: Barbara Taug (center) pictured with Director of Admissions Kevin Muse and Director of Finance Danielle Zimmermann Georgia and Barbara made collateral contact with student services and financial aid staff, and were graciously provided tours of the campus facilities with their amenities. They were able to gather brochure materials for the transit system along with information on affordable housing in the area, shopping facilities, and campus security for those residing on and off campus. The college campus information is beneficial for the student as they transition from home to attending a new school and environment. The Training Services Program objective was to provide other choices for schools on the West Coast. Travelling from Alaska to attend school in the Pacific Northwest provides more opportunities for families to bring their son or daughter home when homesick or during a three-day weekend or holiday. The proximity of Alaska and Washington gives the student a sense of “home,” only with better weather! In April, a community visit to Petersburg, Alaska was conducted by Barbara Taug and Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor Eleanor Smith. The purpose of the visit was to meet with junior and senior high school students and provide information about E&T’s Training Services Program, the application process, and provide a resource list for securing scholarship funding. Barbara and Eleanor, with the help of the Petersburg High School administrative staff, provided current graduates with written notification for the dates of their scheduled visit. Students meeting with them at the Petersburg Indian Association were provided with the training application, scholarship resource list, and brochures from Tribal Vocational Rehabilitation. The turn out was small due to the graduation services the night before, but another scheduled visit may be conducted this fall while students are still in school. The Employment and Training staff will be visiting the Anchorage area in June. They plan to visit the Southeast Carpenters Apprenticeship School, Northern Industrial Training, Trendsetters, Career Academy, and the University of Alaska Anchorage. They will also meet the Alaska Native Medical Center key staff contacts for information for tribal citizens attending school outside Alaska.
