Guidelines for Students in Partial/Full Board/Digs 2013/2014
If you plan to stay in a family home where meals are provided, these guidelines will be useful to
you. This type of accommodation is referred to as “digs”, “lodgings” or “partial board”.
The following guidelines are designed to ensure an element of security for both you and your
landlady/landlord. Landladies/landlords and students will together work out any other details
which may arise, before the student comes to live in the accommodation provided.
Deposit
For the 2013/2014 academic year the required deposit in partial board accommodation will be
the equivalent of 2 weeks rent. This deposit is to be returned to you at the end of the occupancy
on receipt of written notice, where applicable. So in effect, a student will pay 2 weeks as a
deposit and the first week’s rent separately. Deposits should be returned to students promptly
on receipt of the correct notice. Remember that deposits are not usually used for the last few
weeks rent but returned when you are leaving, so budget for this.
Rent Payment.
Students should pay rent weekly in advance. The day the rent should be paid is to be agreed by
landlady and tenant.

Rates
5 day accommodation: €115 per person twin room, €120 per person single room
7 day accommodation: €135 per person twin room, €142 per person single room
Meals
Partial board refers to breakfast, evening meal and late snack. So, if you are in five day
accommodation for example, you should have five evening meals per week. If you go home on
a Friday afternoon a packed lunch will substitute, or perhaps your landlady/lord will provide an
evening meal on a Sunday instead. Again work these details out with your landlady/lord.
Notice to Quit
Students must give a minimum of four weeks notice in writing if they intend leaving the
accommodation. Deposits are to be returned on the student leaving the accommodation.
Landladies must also give students a minimum of four weeks written notice to quit.
Christmas Holidays
Students in partial/full board accommodation do not pay rent during Christmas holidays.
Christmas Break: Monday 23 rd Dec. 2013 to Friday 3 rd Jan. 2014 (2 weeks)
Lectures resume on Monday 3 rd February 2014
New Year Exam Period 13 th – 25 th January 2014
Study Weeks & Easter Holidays
Study Week 1
Monday 28 th October- Friday 1 st November 2013 inclusive.
Study Week 2
Monday 6 th January to Friday 10 th January 2014 inclusive.
Study Week 3
Monday 17 th March 2014 to Friday 21st March 2014 inclusive
Easter Holidays
Monday 21 st April 2014 to Friday 25 th April 2014 inclusive(1 week)
Students in partial board accommodation do not pay rent during Easter holidays.
Study Week 4
Monday 12 th May 2014 to Friday 16 th May 2014 inclusive
Students pay the normal rates during study weeks and exam weeks.
End of Academic Year
Lectures end on the 9 th May 2014. This is effectively the end of the student’s term of
residency. If a student wishes to return for the exam period they can make separate
arrangements with their landlady. Exams will run from Monday 19 th May 2014 to Saturday
31 st May or 7 th June 2014 approximately, however some exams may continue until the first
week of June.
Exam period
For some of you the exam period will run into the first week in June. As many of you will have
weekend exams we have asked landladies who provide 5 day board to accommodate students
for some weekends in the run up to this period. If you wish to stay for a full week around exam
time, you will pay the 7 day rate for accommodation. You must inform your

landlords/landladies when you intend staying in your accommodation during exam time.
Normal rates apply during study weeks and exam weeks.
Absences from Accommodation
If you spend an occasional day away from your accommodation there is no reduction in the
weekly rent. If you are absent due to illness for a week or more you should pay self-catering
rates for this period. If you intend to be away due to course work etc. you should give your
landlady as much notice as possible.
7 Day Accommodation
If you will not be staying a particular weekend you should give your landlady/landlord adequate
notice. A deduction of €20 per day is recommended. This should not arise frequently. Again,
please work out the details with your landlady before you move in.
Facilities
You should have your own keys to the accommodation. Daily shower/bath facilities are
required. Rooms should have adequate heat and study facilities and be damp free.
House Access
You should have reasonable access to the house. There will be times when you do not have
lectures or when you have late starts. A system of access is required which is fair to you and
reasonable in the eyes of the landlady/landlord. Please also remind your landlady, if on Sundays
you arrive at different times depending on lifts, buses etc. Again the details should be agreed
before you move in.
Telephone Calls
Please work out with your landlord access to telephone calls. For example, what is the latest
time you should receive a call from parents, friends etc
Television and Visitors
Television access to be loosely agreed before you move in. Check with your landlord/landlady
the rules concerning visitors before moving in.
