PRINCIPAL’S PERSPECTIVE
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Thank you so much to those of you who were able to attend Student-Led
Conferences. Our attendance was fantastic. It is only with your
engagement that we can hope to be successful in our work.
Because it is a significant change in how we do business, I wanted to repeat
the announcement about student safety that we made in the last newsletter.
When a student is to be dismissed during the school day, a parent/guardian
must be the one to call them out of school. If someone other than the
parent/guardian will be picking them up, please notify us of that at the time
of the call. The person who is picking up the student needs to come into the
office and check out the student in person. We will no longer simply send
students outside to wait for their ride. Students will be waiting for you in
the main office if they are leaving for an appointment or in the nurse‟s
office if they are going home sick.
Finally, the month of November is a great time to talk to your child about
gratitude. I am grateful for our Kiewit Community! Our students, parents,
staff, and community are second to none. You have all been so welcoming
to me as I have made this transition, and I am thankful for the chance to
serve our school.
Sincerely,
Heather Phipps, Ed.D
Attendance Information
Parents and students are reminded that classes begin at 7:45 AM each day.
Students are recommended to follow a morning routine that allows them to
arrive at school at least 10-15 minutes before class begins. This allows time
to socialize, organize school materials, and report to class a few minutes
early. In doing this, students send a positive message to their teachers and
don‟t miss valuable learning time. Thank you for your efforts to have
students on time for class every day.
If a student arrives late or is absent from school, a parent/guardian
should call the attendance office at 402-715-1470 on the day of the absence
by 9:00 AM. Parents/guardians are expected to call each day the student
is absent from school unless other arrangements have been made with the
attendance office. If we have not heard from you and you receive a call,
please return it promptly so we know you are aware of the absence.

PBiS
Kiewit is in the fourth year of implementing Positive Behavior Intervention and Support. The first year we focused on
communicating rules and procedures for common areas of the school. Last year, the teachers focused on PBIS
classroom rules, and this year we are putting a system in place for those students who need more individual support
with specific behaviors.
Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support (PBiS) is an evidence-based, data-informed process that works to
increase student achievement, school attendance, and school success while decreasing challenging student behaviors.
By using a systemic approach incorporating all students, staff, parents, and settings, PBiS can create safer and more
effective schools. Best of all, PBiS is proven to work.
Programs across the country and in Nebraska have met with resounding success, proving that the PBiS approach to
behavior and learning is general enough to assist all students, but focused enough to provide students at risk the
individualized help they need to be successful.

Benefits all students, and is not limited to any particular group
Is based on effective behavioral practices, instructional design, and strategies
Approaches behavior in a proactive way by teaching appropriate behaviors
Fosters positive adult-to-student relationships
Supports the local school continuous improvement process
Is focused on improving academic achievement through creating safe, disciplined environments
Positive Behavior Support for Family
The link between families and positive behavioral interventions and supports is an important one. When families are
meaningfully involved in educational activities their children do better in schools. Families play an important part in
their child's education and social development. The presence of parents in schools not only provides additional
academic supports but also creates community and cultural connections. In many schools, family participation in the
school-wide positive behavior support process is growing. Family members are part of state, district, and school
planning teams and participate in school-wide activities in a variety of ways. Family members participate in the
assessment and problem solving process to create individualized positive behavior support plans for their children.
PBIS Frequently Asked Questions
1. What does PBIS stand for “PBIS” is short for Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports. This language
comes directly from the 1997 reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
2. What is PBIS PBIS IS NOT a packaged curriculum, scripted intervention, or manualized strategy.
PBIS IS a prevention-oriented way for school personnel to (a) organize evidence-based practices, (b) improve
their implementation of those practices, and (c) maximize academic and social behavior outcomes for students.
PBIS supports the success of ALL students.
3. What are PBIS “systems” Systems include (a) team-based leadership, (b) data-based decision-making, (c)
continuous monitoring of student behavior, (d) regular universal screening, and (e) effective on-going professional
development.
4. What does PBIS have to do with school discipline and classroom management PBIS emphasizes
that classroom management and preventive school discipline must be integrated and working together with
effective academic instruction in a positive and safe school climate to maximize success for all students.
5. Where is the best place for schools to access PBIS materials and information The Center is a great
source for learning and obtaining information about PBIS, in particular, defining what PBIS is, what it looks like,
how it can be established, what outcomes are possible, etc.
6. How is PBIS related to “Response-to-Intervention” (RtI) The logic, tenets, and principles of PBIS are
the same as those represented in RtI. Literacy and numeracy implementation frameworks are examples of the
application of RtI for academic behavior, and PBIS is an example of the application of RtI for social behavior.
7. How does PBIS respond to the use of punishment (e.g., detention, timeout, verbal reprimands),
especially for students with serious problem behavior Although PBIS has no specific restrictions on the
use of consequence-based strategies designed to reduce serious problem behavior, teaching-oriented, positive, and
preventive strategies are emphasized for all students, to the greatest extent possible. When student problem
behavior is unresponsive to preventive school-wide and classroom-wide procedures, information about the
student‟s behavior is used to (a) understand why the problem behavior is occurring (function); (b) strengthen
more acceptable alternative behaviors (social skills); (c) remove antecedents and consequences that trigger and
maintain problem behavior, respectively; and (d) add antecedents and consequences that trigger and maintain
acceptable alternative behaviors.
PAYBAC Partners
Kiewit PAYBAC partners are the best! Many of the partners were present for Kiewit conferences. Each
partner has so much to offer the Kiewit staff, students and families. These partnerships are invaluable to
our students, staff and their families. Conferences attendees were treated to brownies from Lazlo‟s as well
as discount coupons from Texas Road House, Cherry Berry and Nebraska ATA Martial Arts. First National
Bank, First Westroads bank and Huntington Learning Center all provided gifts for conferences attendees
as well as special offers to potential customers. Hy-Vee treated the staff to an array of fresh fruit the
following morning after conferences. Thank you, to each of the PAYBAC partners for your support to
Kiewit students, staff and families.
