Dear Parents and Carers of Y10
There are a number of matters covered in this letter. I am sorry that it is quite long but I am
sure you will appreciate the importance of each one. They are:
1. School Uniform
2. Changes to the School Day
3. KS3 Mentor Day and GCSE Maths Exams
4. Re-arrangement in the timetable in June
1. School Uniform
The governing body is considering an addition to Bournville School & Sixth Form Centre
uniform to include a formal style blazer with a school badge. We would like to invite your
views. If a change of uniform is agreed it will be introduced from September 2013.
Rationale
The arguments which have been made for considering such a change include:
A smart formal uniform can boost a student’s self-esteem and self-confidence, stimulating a
pride in themselves and in their school. This can have a positive impact on their attitude to
learning.
A more formal uniform can help to promote an ethos of high standards, high expectations,
achievement and success.
We do understand the expense involved in buying a new school uniform and we have taken
a number of steps to ensure that the transition to the new school uniform is affordable for all
our families. The School has made the decision that this year the school will gift to each
student currently in years 7-10 our new blazer and this will also include the new school
badge.

2. Timings of the School Day.
where learning leads to great opportunities
From September 2013 we would like to change our current day We would welcome your
views on a proposal move to a single lunchtime which will increase our school lunchtime to
50 mins, this would increase the school day by 10 minutes, meaning that we would finish at
3:20 pm.
Rationale
A single lunch would enable us to offer activities, clubs homework groups etc, and
would also mean that there would be less disruption to learning.
The consultation process for the Uniform and School Day
From Friday 24 th May we will begin a 3 week consultation period with parents and
pupils about the changes to the school day, to be introduced and begin in September
2013.
Comments may be submitted in the following ways:
emailing: enquiry@bournville.bham.sch.uk putting uniform in the subject,
writing a clearly labelled letter, (uniform / timings of day consultation), to the
school via the school office.
The deadline for all comments will be 4:00 pm, Friday 14 th June 2013.
KS3 Mentor and GCSE Maths Exams
On Tuesday 11 th June we will be holding a follow up review for all our KS3 students.
This will run on the same lines as the day we had in December. Students and parents
will book a 15 min interview with a teacher. They will not be required to attend school
that day other than for that interview.
Re-arrangement to the timetable in June
We are always looking to maximise our students’ achievement. There is opportunity
in the summer term to use the absence of exam classes to tweak our timetable and
provide an even better learning experience.
There will be exams in some Y10 subjects in the week beginning 17 th June. There
will also be field trips for Geography and History at the end of that weeks
For the 2 weeks starting on 24 th June we will rearrange the timetable. We have had a
major push on English and Maths recently, getting many of Year 10 to sit these

GCSEs early this May and June. Once those exams have passed we want to make
up for time lost in other subjects. This means for two weeks there will be more time
on option subjects, Science and, for those students who do it in the core curriculum,
IT. We expect subjects to complete a major piece of GCSE controlled assessment or
to complete important units towards BTEC awards.
It will be an important time for all students and, as usual, we expect 100%
attendance.
The new timetable will run for 2 weeks before students take part in a week’s worth of
post-16 experience. This will be when they either complete their work experience or
take part in two other options:
1. For students aiming for the Sixth Form there will be a week of taster activities and
visits
2. For others there will be an Enterprise Project working with British Transport police
that will develop vital employability skills.
The new timetable will be given to students after half-term.
