Ballarat Triathlon
Ballarat’s first triathlon since water was
restored to Lake Wendouree will be known as
the V/Line Ballarat Triathlon and Multisport
Festival when the sport returns to the lake on
the weekend of 26 and 27 November.
V/Line will be the main sponsor of the event,
which includes five separate races – two running
events and three triathlons to cater for beginner
athletes through to the elite.
Triathlon Victoria CEO Simon Auty said the
multisport weekend would have a community
feel with high schools, local businesses,
sporting clubs and other groups encouraged to
enter as teams or individuals.
“Two new running events will be held late
on the Saturday afternoon with competitors
offered a 6km or 12km race around the
lake’s foreshore, before a community BBQ to
celebrate the return of water sports to Lake
Wendouree,” Mr Auty said.
The ‘Run for Health’ laps of the lake have been
organised by Ballarat Health Services which
hopes to attract up to 1000 runners. Proceeds
from the ‘Run for Health’ events will support
Ballarat Health Service and its new facility, the
Ballarat Regional Integrated Cancer Centre.
V/Line Marketing & Stakeholder Relations GM
Paul Matthews said V/Line was proud to be a
major part of the event which encourages both
tourism to Ballarat and an active lifestyle.
“As a country-based business, V/Line
supports a range of events and tourism
initiatives so it’s great to have one so
close to Wendouree Station which now has
high frequency train services to and from
Melbourne,” Mr Matthews said.
“We see the Lake Wendouree precinct and the
events it’s now starting to attract as a strong
tourism drawcard for the area.
“The lake and Ballarat Botanical Gardens are
only a few hundred metres from Wendouree
Station, so the natural beauty of the area,
coupled with some major sporting events lends
itself well to encourage people to travel from
Melbourne straight to Wendouree Station.”
The V/Line Ballarat Triathlon and Multisport
Festival event format will be:
Saturday 26 November
1pm – Dash triathlon
Made in Hollywood 3 December 2011 – 12 February 2012
The Made in Hollywood exhibition at Bendigo Art
Gallery features 94 photographs taken from 1925
to the early 1960s.
Organised by the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, the
exhibition considers the carefully constructed images
and celebrity of actors including Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson,
Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, James Dean, Marilyn Monroe,
Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Laurel and Hardy, Carole
Lombard, Jean Harlow, Mary Pickford, the Marx Brothers,
Katherine Hepburn, James Stewart, Rita Hayworth, Vivien Leigh,
Humphrey Bogart, Alfred Hitchcock, Ronald Reagan, Fred Astaire
and Ginger Rogers.
Drawn from the unrivalled archives of late author and collector
John Kobal, the exhibition features the work of more than fifty
photographers. John Kobal was the first collector who sought
to understand the vital role that photographers played in the
creation of stars.
As the prolific author or editor of more than thirty books, John
Kobal was among the earliest historians to shift the focus away
from the stars to the Hollywood photographers themselves.
Catch the V/Line train to Bendigo Station and walk 15 minutes
or catch a local bus to the gallery.
Get ready for summer
Victoria might be famous for its variable
weather, but we have our fair share of hot
days in summer. When the temperature
soars, all forms of transport can feel the
heat, including our trains.
Like most rail networks around the world,
on hot days our trains run at slower
speeds as a safety precaution because
extreme heat can cause the steel tracks
to expand.
The speed reduction can vary across
Victoria, but generally trains that run
normally at either 110km/h or 160km/h
have to slow to about 90km/h. As a result
some trains can run up to 30 minutes
slower or be partially or fully replaced
by coaches.
When are trains slowed
V/Line slows trains when the
temperature reaches 33 degrees at
Swan Hill and Echuca.
This safety policy applies at 36 degrees
between Melbourne and Bendigo,
Ballarat/Ararat/Maryborough, Geelong/
Warrnambool, Traralgon/Bairnsdale and
Seymour/Shepparton.
On days when these temperatures are
reached, the speed restrictions are
activated between 12:00 and 20:00.
Morning peak-hour trains are generally
unaffected by the hot weather. However,
from midday some trains can run up to
30 minutes slower, and a small number
might be fully or partially replaced by
road coaches.
Second Albury/Wodonga train returns
V/Line introduced its daily
second return train to the
Border and northeast Victoria
on Sunday 30 October.
Public Transport Minister Terry
Mulder said he was pleased
the Government was now able
to return this second daily
V/Line train, which had
been off the tracks since
8 November 2008.
“I am grateful to V/Line,
the Department of Transport,
the Australian Rail Track
Corporation and local MPs Bill
Tilley, Tim McCurdy, Bill Sykes
and Cindy McLeish for their
efforts during the past few
months to ensure that
northeast Victorians get their
much loved V/Line local trains
back,” he said.
The current V/Line trains
servicing the Border are the
06:35 from Albury scheduled
to arrive into Melbourne at
10:25 and the 12:00 train from
Melbourne, scheduled to
arrive into Albury at 15:45.
The new trains will be the
17:20 from Albury, arriving at
Southern Cross Station at
21:40, and the 18:01 from
Melbourne, arriving at Albury
at 22:00.
Since the reintroduction of the
first V/Line train on Sunday 26
June, just over 33,000 people
had used the train.
“As the Australian Rail Track
Corporation works to repair the
line and install new signals,
varying speed restrictions will
remain in place and continue
to have a major impact on
V/Line’s train punctuality,”
Mr Mulder said.
Page 6

V/Line Chief Executive Officer Rob
Barnett said a decision was made to
bring back the second return service
despite the condition of the ARTC track.
“We have found people prefer to use
the train over the bus, even if it is going
to run slower than we would like,”
he said.
“The current train is not running to the
high standards of service we expect
with only 17 per cent of our Albury and
Wodonga trains arriving on time over
the last three months.
“We are hopeful ARTC works will mean
speed restrictions in place can be lifted
as track and signal issues are
addressed.”
Some station hours and some
connecting bus services to/from
Mulwala, Corowa, Bright and
Beechworth have also been altered.
New timetables are now available
online, from your nearest staffed station
or by calling 136 196.
The final return services are not
expected to be introduced until
early 2012.
