Assessment and Curriculum for Individuals
with Developmental Disabilities
BEST
SELLER
The Functional Independence Skills
Handbook, or FISH, is used to assess a
person's ability to perform certain functional
activities in daily life. It was developed
for special education teachers,
paraeducators, and parents working
with individuals with severe developmental
disabilities. The outcome of the
program, when successful, is a direct
increase in personal independence in
those with autism, mental retardation,
and related disorders.
FISH contains (a) an assessment
instrument that can assist the professional
in determining goals for future
educational or developmental training
programs for a person with developmental
disabilities and (b) sample lesson plans with teaching techniques
for each item evaluated. The assessment directly relates to the accompanying
curriculum.
Although targeted toward people with developmental disabilities, this
program would also be benefi cial for children in the early grade levels or
anyone with cognitive defi cits, school-age through adult. It is a criterion-referenced
series of 421 tasks. The assessment instrument and lessons are
organized according to seven domains: Adaptive Behavior Skills, Affective
(or Emotional) Skills, Cognitive Skills, Sensorimotor Skills, Social Skills,
Speech and Language Skills, and Vocational Skills. (2003)
One-to-One Training
Instructional Procedures for Learners
with Developmental Disabilities
Pieter Duker • Robert Didden • Jeff Sigafoos
This useful book focuses on how to teach adaptive
skills to individuals with developmental disabilities.
You’ll also learn how to manage problem
behaviors that often occur during adaptive skill
training. This book is ideal for special education
teachers and behavioral specialists, and for use
in graduate and undergraduate special education
classes. One-to-One Training presents straightforward,
easy-to-implement procedures that
lessen the severity of the disability’s impact on daily functioning.
The one-to-one training format, also referred to as discrete-trial training, is
a structured approach involving a learner and a trainer. Using this format,
the trainer creates an opportunity for the learner to make a response to
the trainer’s stimulus. The trainer then ensures that a correct response is
obtained from the learner and provides reinforcement for correct responses.
The one-to-one training format refl ects advances that have been made in
instructional procedures since behavioral principles were fi rst applied to education.
This groundbreaking book examines these advances and establishes
discrete-trial training as the preferred method of adaptive skill instruction.
FUNCTIONAL LIVING SKILLS
Real Life Math
Living on a Paycheck
BEST
SELLER
Ellen McPeek Glisan
Here’s an alternative method of teaching consumer math. Students learn a
wide range of math skills within a context of basic simulation. This format
allows students to learn math skills in conjunction with one another, rather
than in isolation.
All students can benefi t from learning consumer math; however, for
students who struggle in school, this approach might be the only way
they will ever really learn needed everyday math skills. Students who have
previously failed in math can succeed with this program because it offers
an opportunity to learn by doing.
In Real Life Math, students learn to write checks and keep a check register—not
for the sake of learning the skills but as a way to pay their bills
and keep track of their fi nances in the simulation. Their individual checkbooks
become a tool rather than a lesson. Skills are used repeatedly and
reinforced by natural repetition. Bills are paid repeatedly throughout the
program because paying bills is a repetitive event in life. This serves as a
perfect learn–review pattern in the classroom. As students learn to function
in the make-believe town of Willow, they truly learn to function in life.
Real Life Math provides an ideal consumer math program for students
with learning disabilities in mathematics who are mainstreamed in general
education classrooms with or without inclusion, and students who have the
ability to write checks, budget, and make adult-life decisions who are in
self-contained settings.
The instructional simulation is an ongoing role-play and includes 51 awareness
assignments. Single-day directions have also been included for classrooms
that are not conducive to full-fl edged role-playing on a daily basis.
Within the simulation, students hunt for and choose apartments; they sign
leases, pay security deposits, start paying rent, and buy starter furniture
and basic household necessities. Students who think they will have trouble
affording an apartment on their own can choose roommates and begin
making joint decisions.
After fi lling out applications and being interviewed, students get jobs. They
receive paychecks based on actual school attendance. For 70 simulated
days, they budget their money to:
• Rent and furnish their apartments • Pay bills
• Buy cars and gas fill-ups
• Buy groceries
• Pay for leisure activities
• Pay for medical care
• Take care of personal needs
• Buy clothes
Everyday Activities to Sequence
Functional Photo Cards
Mary Pitti Daly • Daniel P. Daly
This all-in-one tool will help individuals of all ages—especially adults—who
have diffi culty organizing and sequencing the steps required to perform
a task as a result of stroke or brain injury. The cards can be helpful in
improving sequencing, organizational and oral language, communication,
and critical thinking skills.
Eighty full-color photo cards feature functional sequenced activities. Each
sequenced activity set includes three to fi ve photo cards. For example,
four cards depict different time frames for the task of shaving. When
placed in the correct order, they demonstrate the natural sequence in
which a man shaves his face with a razor. Categories of activities include:
• daily living skills • household tasks
• hospital situations • community mobility
The accompanying manual provides lots of ideas for using the photo cards
creatively, including suggestions for using the cards in group settings.
You get reproducible record-keeping forms, too, so you can track the
The Facts of Life ...and More
Sexuality and Intimacy for People
with Intellectual Disabilities
Leslie Walker-Hirsch, M.Ed., FAAMR
Making good decisions about sexuality is
a critical part of adulthood, but sometimes
people with intellectual disabilities don’t
get the support or education they need to
navigate this complex aspect of life.
Professionals will change that with this
urgently needed book, which gives social
workers, teachers, and direct support
professionals the comprehensive information
they need to educate people with
disabilities about sexuality and help them
make the best possible choices across the lifespan.
Blending in-depth examination of legal and clinical issues with sensitive
discussion of the emotional side of sexuality, expert contributors from
diverse fi elds help readers
» deliver meaningful, individualized, and culturally sensitive sexuality education
» understand parents’ perspectives—and help them provide appropriate information
and support to their child throughout life
» assist people with disabilities in managing risks associated with sexual activity
» use behavior interventions to encourage appropriate sexual expression
» help people who are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender validate their feelings
and counter negative messages
» address issues related to medical care and intervention for people with disabilities
Going beyond the facts of life, this book gives professionals candid
interviews and personal anecdotes that show how real-life couples with disabilities
handle the joys and challenges of their relationships—courtship,
sex, parenthood, disagreements, fi nances, and more.
Readers will also get examples of effective sexuality education techniques
and vivid case studies that illustrate key points. With this frank, thorough,
and highly readable guide, professionals will better advocate for people
with disabilities and help them reap the social and emotional benefi ts of
healthy, responsible, age-appropriate sexuality.
