Sponsorship proposal
Portsmouth Cultural Trust Registered Charity no. 1153358
The Portsmouth Cultural Trust
A case for support
Portsmouth Cultural Trust is a
not-for-profit Trust limited by
guarantee and established in
early 2011. In August of 2013
we became a registered charity.
At the Portsmouth Cultural
Trust we agree with the view
of so many of the 235,000
people that use the building
every year in that the Guildhall
is synonymous with everything
that is good about the City
of Portsmouth. It rose from
the ashes after it was bombed
during the war and became a
symbol of pride to all of us: a
majestic, beautiful landmark at
the heart of the city.
Our building has a standing
concert capacity of 2,500 and is
known for presenting first class
entertainment, conferences,
weddings and events. It is the
face of Portsmouth, a place
of many happy memories for
residents and beyond.
Recent events include soldout
performances by Mumford
& Sons, Royal Blood, Scissor
Sisters, Micky Flanagan, Simple
Minds, Jake Bugg, Stereophonics,
The Specials and many more.
The Trust is also serious about
classical music, presenting
concerts by the likes of the
London Philharmonic Orchestra,
the Royal Philharmonic
Orchestra and 10+ concerts
per year by the Bournemouth
Symphony Orchestra.
A partnership with Portsmouth
University and Music in the
Round has seen the Portsmouth
Chamber Music Series move
from to the Guildhall in 2014.
Big news for 2014 is that we
have launched a Get into
Music Portsmouth programme
in partnership with Creative
and Cultural Skills, Creative
Choices, and the Southern Cooperative,
supported by UK
Music, aimed at providing young
people with knowledge and
experience in the technical and
backstage music industry.
The Trust also has a realistic
ambition of establishing
the Guildhall as a leading
Conference and Room Hire
Centre in Portsmouth and the
greater Hampshire.
To educate
We aim to educate
people in the arts
through performance
and creative
participation.
To collaborate
We work with
partners so that we
can achieve more
together.
OUR MISSION
To inspire, entertain and
transform lives through the arts.
To inspire
We aim to inspire our
community through
our work and our passion
for the arts.
To diversify
We will continue to
diversify our offer, and
thereby engage with
our audience and client
base.

The Guildhall Music Academy
£25,000
We are seeking to launch a new Music Academy for young people - the target age group
being 11-16 inclusive. The Academy will teach young people music skills in out of school
hours, notably mid-week and weekends. We will provide a contemporary environment for
teaching instruments such as keyboards, guitar and singing. The Academy will deliver teaching
both in the Guildhall and at local community and youth centres and schools. It will provide a
popularist approach to music seeking engagement and good participation. We will work with
partner organisations who can help with teaching provision and who have proven experience.
There is compelling evidence that in Portsmouth there is inconsistent and relatively poor
music provision amongst young people of secondary school age. Many local indicators point
to low educational attainment. Several wards within Portsmouth fall into the lowest quintile
of deprivation and GCSE’s achieved are 47.6% against 60.8% nationally. A recent report and
survey conducted by Portsmouth University for Portsmouth City Council called ‘Aspirations,
Expectations and Achievement’ suggested that only 16% of secondary age children are engaged
with music lessons or engagement outside of school hours compared with 20% nationally.
Sydney Opera House digital educational project
(major partner)
£6,000 or in kind (video conferencing unit)
As part of our Get Into Music project we are talking to the Sydney Opera House about live
streaming some of their educational projects and tours to Portsmouth Guildhall. In order for
us to do so we require a video conferencing unit that will enable participants to interact in real
time with teachers and tour guides in Australia.
Sponsoring this unit provides you with a very exciting press and publicity opportunity, while
supporting our charity and facilitating international collaboration in arts education.
The unit will also be made available to our room hire and conference clients. We will work
with you on a package that would ensure you get great value for your brand out of this
sponsorship opportunity.
Stage rise for acoustic setup
£12,000 or in kind
When putting on community events such as The Milton Glee Club Choir, Royal Marines
Concerts or Classical performances we need a stage rise. It will be used for all orchestral
concerts, such as the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra or as we have recently had – the
London Symphony or Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. It will also be used in the city at Festivals
and other venues such as Portsmouth Cathedral. It is however not suitable for rock or pop
concerts. They last for about 10 years but tend to be rather expensive. By sponsoring this
stage rise you will make a real difference to the quality of concerts put on by orchestras and
community groups. We will work with you on a package that would ensure you get great value
for your brand out of this sponsorship opportunity.
