Indicator 5: Do women have continuity of carer during labour and birth
Gold standard care is defined as women having at least one maternity care provider (i.e., the same person) care for them right
through labour and birth (or through birth for women who do not have labour).
We asked: “Was there at least one maternity care provider who cared for you right through your labour/birth”

What do women say about their care
“I had a single midwife who cared for me throughout my pregnancy,
labour/birth and for 6 weeks after the birth. I felt comfortable
knowing that I could contact her at any time if I had concerns, and I
knew that she would always talk with me in a genuine, honest and
respectful manner…I felt comfortable and safe in her care and knew
that she was aware of my wishes and concerns relating to the birth
and felt that I could completely trust her.”
“I had a change of 4 midwives through my last stages of labour,
personally speaking it was very unsettling having midwives exchange
notes mid-way and having go through introductions of your new
midwives whilst in pain.”
“Constantly seeing 'stand in' midwives meant I did not receive
consistent or adequate care and advice.”
