Every year, SingHealth Orthopaedic Surgery Residents will step out of their role as
learners and into the shoes of teachers. The two-week teaching assignment has
encouraged many Resident instructors to review their anatomy knowledge before the
class, and Yeong Huei was no different. “The students were motivated and intelligent
individuals who came well prepared for the dissection course. I enjoyed putting in the
extra effort so that the students derived the maximum knowledge from their learning
experience,” says Yeong Huei.
Dr Chia Shi-Lu, who spearheaded this initiative for his Anatomy class with Duke-NUS
medical students, explains how it creates a win-win situation: “Teaching allows the
Residents to review their anatomy knowledge and trains them to become better
teachers. This is important because the ability to teach well is a critical part of being a
good senior doctor.”
This arrangement also provides a better learning experience for medical students. On
top of more personalized attention and guidance, Residents were also able to share
the clinical relevance of the subject so that medical students could relate to the
subject more easily. Says Caroline Chia, a Duke-NUS year 1 medical student who was
guided by Yeong Huei: “My learning was enriched by Yeong Huei’s sharing of his
personal experience; for example, how certain anatomical landmarks are of clinical
significance, as well as the struggles he faced as a medical student and as a young
doctor. His dedication has greatly enhanced our learning experience beyond books.”
“Teaching is a
humbling
experience.
I am honored
to be able to
share my
knowledge and
also learn from
the students.”
While imparting knowledge to juniors has always been part and parcel of the daily
work of Orthopaedic Surgery Residents, this full-time teaching experience has inspired
Yeong Huei to want to teach more. He enjoyed the two-week interaction with his
students, and realized how his teaching had a reciprocal effect since he was learning
from the students at the same time: “Teaching is a humbling experience. I am
honored to be able to share my knowledge and also learn from the students.”

frontiers of Orthopaedics by capitalizing on your strengths in
innovative care, education and research.
INNOVATIVE CARE EDUCATION RESEARCH
Gain an advantage in your
Residency training with
SingHealth’s comprehensive
range of patient cases, which
give you exposure to a wide
range of orthopaedic
conditions. You will learn from
a team of senior surgeons who
Teaching juniors may be an
integral part of most Residents’
routines, but our Residents
have the chance to delve
deeper and explore their
interests in teaching with the
opportunity to be a full-time
teacher for two weeks every
year. In the firm belief that
every good senior doctor
should be able to teach well,
we have structured the
Orthopaedic Surgery Program
to give you a head start in
formal teaching, where
Residents assist in the teaching
of medical students as Resident
instructors in the anatomy
dissection laboratories.
You will be immersed in
research for two to three weeks
every year, when you can
choose to write a proposal, do a
literature review/search, or
work on a journal submission. If
you would like to further your
interest in research, you can
select the clinician scientist
track and pursue a two-year
Master of Clinical Investigation
program offered by the
National University of
Singapore (NUS) while
undergoing your clinician
education.
Campus Beat - A Peek into the Life of a SingHealth Ophthalmologist
The SingHealth Residency Ophthalmology Program mini open house on 23 March 2013 offered more than 30 medical
students from the Yong Loo Lin Shool of Medicine at NUS and the Duke-NUS Medical School the chance to meet with
Faculty and Residents, and gain some insight into what it means to be an ophthalmologist.
On hand to share their experiences were Program Director Dr Ian Yeo and his faculty members. The Residents too
got into the action, bringing the students on a tour of the world-class ophthalmic training and research facilities at
the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC) and the Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI).
Here are some comments from the participants on their firsthand experience with the Ophthalmology Residency
Program:

“The SNEC Open House not only provided us a platform to interact with the
senior staff and Core Faculty of the institution, it also allowed us to interact
with the Residents as well. This has given us a holistic insight into the SNEC
family on all levels of seniority.”
- Nathan Tan Weiji, Year 4 Medical Student, Yong Loo Lin School of
Medicine, NUS
"The Open House provided a sneak peek at the rigorous Residency
curriculum offered at SNEC. I was impressed by the teaching faculty, many
of them renowned leaders in their own sub-specialties, as well as the
training that ensures all-rounded exposure to ocular diseases. I am enticed
by the prospect of doing world-class research at this leading institution.
The best ophthalmologists look at disease in the eye undaunted, and SNEC
is the place where I could become like them."
- Owen Png, Year 1 Medical Student, Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School
