What you should expect to gain
during your first year at Lake Erie College
1. A beginning ability to sort through large quantities of information and
determine what are valuable and authoritative for research purposes.
2. A greater understanding of yourself in terms of goals and aspirations, as well as
how you can make a unique impact on the world.
3. An appreciation for the diverse worldviews and life experiences of your peers.
4. An appreciation for the benefits of learning for its own sake, not just to earn
excellent grades, and how those benefits shape your interaction with the world.
5. Opportunities to interact in a variety of social settings, engage in professional
networking and cultivate lifelong friendships.
6. A sense of how your contributions are an essential part of the Lake Erie College
community and how your actions impact future generations at the College.
7. An ability to remain open to new ideas while still remaining true to those values
that have formed your sense of identity.
What is expected of you
as a new student at Lake Erie College
1. Learn to communicate effectively with your instructors. When you don’t
understand something, ask questions. When you’re uncertain about what is
expected of you, find out. If you make a mistake, be accountable. Finally,
read your email regularly!
2. Take your educational opportunities seriously and treat college as if it’s your job.
3. Avoid behaviors that may appear disrespectful or rude. Don’t text-message,
wear earphones or “rest your head” during class.
4. Show courtesy by addressing members of the faculty and staff by their respective
titles (i.e., President, Vice President, Professor, Doctor, Coach, Mister/Missus).
5. Complete your assignments on time, get tutoring or writing assistance when
you need it, and check your work before handing it in for a grade.
6. Realize that your success is in your own hands and it’s up to you to stay motivated.
7. Go to class! If you cannot make it to class due to an emergency, then make
every effort to communicate with your instructors as early as possible.
