REGULATIONS FOR THE DIPLOMA OF DIAGNOSTIC ULTRASOUND<br />

1. Governance<br />

1.1 The Diploma of Diagnostic <strong>Ultrasound</strong> (<strong>DDU</strong>) is awarded by the Council of the<br />

<strong>Australasian</strong> <strong>Society</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Ultrasound</strong> <strong>in</strong> Medic<strong>in</strong>e (ASUM) to appropriately qualified<br />

candidates of good stand<strong>in</strong>g who are ord<strong>in</strong>arily resident and registered as medical<br />

practitioners <strong>in</strong> Australia or New Zealand who have undergone tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

ultrasonography acceptable to the ASUM Council and who have achieved a pass <strong>in</strong> each<br />

of the assessments.<br />

1.2 The <strong>DDU</strong> is managed by the <strong>DDU</strong> Board of Exam<strong>in</strong>ers, a Committee of the ASUM<br />

Council. The role of the <strong>DDU</strong> Board of Exam<strong>in</strong>ers is to:<br />

1.2.1 Uphold the status of the <strong>DDU</strong> and the standard of diagnostic medical ultrasound as<br />

practiced by holders of the <strong>DDU</strong>.<br />

1.2.2 Determ<strong>in</strong>e and publish curriculum and syllabus.<br />

1.2.3 Develop learn<strong>in</strong>g resources.<br />

1.2.4 Set and mark assessments <strong>in</strong> conjunction with <strong>DDU</strong> Exam<strong>in</strong>ers.<br />

1.2.5 Make recommendations to the ASUM Council regard<strong>in</strong>g the award of the <strong>DDU</strong>.<br />

2. Admission<br />

2.1 Admission to the <strong>DDU</strong> is available to suitably qualified members and tra<strong>in</strong>ee members of<br />

ASUM.<br />

2.2 Be<strong>for</strong>e admission to the <strong>DDU</strong> each candidate shall either:<br />

2.2.1 Provide evidence of permanent resident status <strong>in</strong> Australia or New Zealand<br />

2.2.2 Provide evidence of a visa allow<strong>in</strong>g him/her a residency period sufficient to meet all<br />

criteria <strong>for</strong> the <strong>DDU</strong> while resident <strong>in</strong> Australia or New Zealand.<br />

OR<br />

2.3 Applicants must have a medical degree recognised <strong>in</strong> Australia or New Zealand and<br />

registration as a medical practitioner with the Medical Board or Council of a state or<br />

territory of Australia and New Zealand. Applicants may be asked to provide evidence of<br />

registration.<br />

2.4 Be<strong>for</strong>e admission to the <strong>DDU</strong> each applicant must provide certified evidence that they<br />

are:<br />

a) A Fellow of one of the colleges listed below<br />

OR<br />

b) currently employed as a Registrar<br />

AND<br />

In the third or subsequent year of a specialist Fellowship tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

program with one of the colleges listed below:<br />

• Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and<br />

Gynaecologists (RANZCOG)<br />

• Royal <strong>Australasian</strong> College of Physicians (RACP)<br />

• Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR)<br />

• Royal <strong>Australasian</strong> College of Surgeons (RACS)<br />

• Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA)<br />

• Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO)<br />

• <strong>Australasian</strong> College of Emergency Medic<strong>in</strong>e (ACEM)<br />

• College of Intensive Care Medic<strong>in</strong>e (CICM) OR<br />

• Have an equivalent qualification <strong>in</strong> one of these discipl<strong>in</strong>es which is<br />

recognised by the relevant College and the ASUM Council.<br />

2.5 Application <strong>for</strong> Admission to the <strong>DDU</strong><br />

2.5.1 All applications <strong>for</strong> enrolment and admission to the assessments <strong>for</strong> the <strong>DDU</strong> must be<br />

made on the <strong>for</strong>ms supplied by ASUM <strong>in</strong> the <strong>DDU</strong> section of the ASUM website<br />

(www.asum.com.au) <strong>for</strong> the relevant year of assessment.<br />

2.5.2 Correspondence will not be entered <strong>in</strong>to concern<strong>in</strong>g a candidate’s status until an<br />

application <strong>for</strong>m has been received.<br />

2.5.3 The application <strong>for</strong>m, accompanied by the assessment fee, must be received by the<br />

Secretary of ASUM on or be<strong>for</strong>e the advertised clos<strong>in</strong>g date <strong>for</strong> the appropriate<br />

assessment. Incomplete applications will be returned. It is the candidate’s<br />

responsibility to ensure that the completed application is received at the ASUM office<br />

on, or be<strong>for</strong>e the clos<strong>in</strong>g date.<br />

2.5.4 Candidates who are denied admission to the assessment will receive a full refund.<br />

2.5.5 All candidates <strong>for</strong> the <strong>DDU</strong> must be f<strong>in</strong>ancial ASUM members at the time of enrolment<br />

and ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> ASUM membership until their Diploma is granted or until they withdraw.<br />

2.6 Supervisor Requirements<br />

2.6.1 All candidates <strong>for</strong> the <strong>DDU</strong> must nom<strong>in</strong>ate a Primary Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Supervisor and submit a<br />

nom<strong>in</strong>ation of Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Supervisor Form with their application to enrol <strong>in</strong> the <strong>DDU</strong>.<br />

2.6.1.2 Primary Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Supervisor<br />

The Primary Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Supervisor must be a currently practis<strong>in</strong>g specialist hold<strong>in</strong>g one of the<br />

follow<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

• Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiology (RANZCR)<br />

• Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons (Vascular)<br />

• Diploma <strong>in</strong> Diagnostic <strong>Ultrasound</strong> (<strong>DDU</strong>) from ASUM <strong>in</strong> the same discipl<strong>in</strong>e as the<br />

candidate<br />

• Certification <strong>in</strong> Obstetrical and Gynaecological <strong>Ultrasound</strong> (COGU) from RANZCOG<br />

• Certification <strong>in</strong> Maternal Fetal Medic<strong>in</strong>e (CMFM) from RANZCOG<br />

and be:<br />

• <strong>in</strong> a position that enables them to comment authoritatively on the candidate's practice<br />

and stand<strong>in</strong>g<br />

• actively <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> cl<strong>in</strong>ical ultrasound practice and have suitable experience ie a<br />

m<strong>in</strong>imum of two years post obta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the ultrasound related qualification<br />

• expected to be predom<strong>in</strong>ately work<strong>in</strong>g with<strong>in</strong> the candidate’s usual work place and be<br />

available <strong>for</strong> direct access when required.<br />

2.6.1.3 In those areas where suitable Primary Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Supervisors with the above listed<br />

qualifications cannot be found (e.g. Emergency Medic<strong>in</strong>e, Critical Care etc), the <strong>DDU</strong><br />

Board of Exam<strong>in</strong>ers may, at its discretion, accept another person as Primary Cl<strong>in</strong>ical<br />

Supervisor or a comb<strong>in</strong>ation of supervisors with the appropriate expertise to provide<br />

supervision.<br />

2.6.1.4 Primary Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Supervisors accepted by the <strong>DDU</strong> Board of Exam<strong>in</strong>ers <strong>for</strong> the role may<br />

engage other experienced and suitably credentialed practitioners such as other<br />

specialist medical practitioners oran Accredited Medical Sonographer (AMS) as<br />

“Associate Supervisors” to assist <strong>in</strong> appropriate teach<strong>in</strong>g and competence assessment<br />

with<strong>in</strong> their scope of practice (e.g. of scann<strong>in</strong>g competence <strong>for</strong> an AMS, but not<br />

diagnosis and/or report writ<strong>in</strong>g).<br />

2.6.2 Associate Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Supervisor<br />

2.6.2.1 All practitioners <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> cl<strong>in</strong>ical supervision of a candidate who will be responsible<br />

<strong>for</strong> any assessment or verification of practice must be approved by the <strong>DDU</strong> Board of<br />

Exam<strong>in</strong>ers prior to their commencement of the cl<strong>in</strong>ical supervision <strong>for</strong> the purposes of<br />

the <strong>DDU</strong> requirements.<br />

2.6.2.2 If the Primary Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Supervisor nom<strong>in</strong>ates an Associate Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Supervisor a<br />

nom<strong>in</strong>ation of Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Supervisor Form must be submitted to ASUM.<br />

2.6.2.3 The Associate Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Supervisor must:<br />

• Be a medical specialist<br />

• Hold a ultrasound qualification or accreditation<br />

• Have two years cl<strong>in</strong>ical ultrasound experience follow<strong>in</strong>g the atta<strong>in</strong>ment of their<br />

ultrasound qualification or accreditation.<br />

• Be an Accredited Medical Sonographer (AMS)<br />

or<br />

• Have a m<strong>in</strong>imum of three years full-time equivalent experience as an AMS<br />

• Have extensive experience and/or qualifications <strong>in</strong> cl<strong>in</strong>ical supervision and<br />

assessment <strong>in</strong> the cl<strong>in</strong>ical ultrasound sett<strong>in</strong>g. Evidence must be submitted to<br />

demonstrate this (eg Certificate IV or Graduate Certificate <strong>in</strong> workplace<br />

assessment or tertiary education; certificate of completion of a suitable<br />

exam<strong>in</strong>er/assessor workshop such as offered by ASUM or the Australian<br />

Institute of <strong>Ultrasound</strong> AIU; letter of appo<strong>in</strong>tment as a tutor sonographer or<br />

university cl<strong>in</strong>ical supervisor and/or assessor <strong>in</strong> the area of ultrasound).<br />

2.7 Application <strong>for</strong> Admission to Module 3<br />

2.7.1 Be<strong>for</strong>e admission to Module 3 each candidate must:<br />

i. Successfully complete Modules 1 and 2 and<br />

ii.<br />

iii.<br />

Have completed a m<strong>in</strong>imum of eighteen (18) months experience <strong>in</strong> the practice of<br />

diagnostic ultrasound prior to undertak<strong>in</strong>g the oral assessment.<br />

Provide certified evidence that they are a Fellow of the:<br />

• Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and<br />

Gynaecologists (RANZCOG),<br />

• Royal <strong>Australasian</strong> College of Physicians (RACP),<br />

• Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR)<br />

• Royal <strong>Australasian</strong> College of Surgeons (RACS),<br />

• Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA),<br />

• Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO),<br />

• <strong>Australasian</strong> College of Emergency Medic<strong>in</strong>e (ACEM),<br />

• College of Intensive Care Medic<strong>in</strong>e (CICM), or<br />

• an equivalent qualification <strong>in</strong> one of these discipl<strong>in</strong>es which is recognised by<br />

the relevant College and the ASUM Council.<br />

Candidates who, at the time of the exam<strong>in</strong>ation, are with<strong>in</strong> 6 months of complet<strong>in</strong>g this<br />

requirement may, at the discretion of the Chair of the <strong>DDU</strong> Board of Exam<strong>in</strong>ers, be<br />

admitted to Module 3 but may not be awarded the <strong>DDU</strong> until they satisfy all admission<br />

requirements.<br />

2.7.2 Be<strong>for</strong>e admission to Module 3, candidates must submit a ‘Verification of Cl<strong>in</strong>ical<br />

Experience’ <strong>for</strong>m from his/her approved Primary Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Supervisor.<br />

3. Syllabus<br />

3.1 Candidates may enrol to be assessed <strong>in</strong> <strong>DDU</strong>:<br />

• General ultrasound (Radiology, Surgery, Nuclear Medic<strong>in</strong>e and Paediatrics)<br />

• Cardiology<br />

• Obstetrics & Gynaecology<br />

• Vascular<br />

• Critical Care (Intensive Care and Anaesthesia)<br />

• Emergency<br />

3.2 Candidates are required to either:<br />

i. Hold the recognised specialist qualification <strong>in</strong> the correspond<strong>in</strong>g pr<strong>in</strong>cipal specialty<br />

or<br />

ii.<br />

Hold an accredited tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g position and be enrolled <strong>in</strong> a tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g program, toward the<br />

recognised specialist qualification <strong>in</strong> the correspond<strong>in</strong>g pr<strong>in</strong>cipal specialty, accredited<br />

by the relevant College and recognised by the ASUM Council.<br />

3.3 A copy of the current syllabus <strong>for</strong> the <strong>DDU</strong> is available via the ASUM website<br />

(http://www.asum.com.au).<br />

4. The <strong>DDU</strong> Assessments<br />

The <strong>DDU</strong> consists of three modules. Module 1 and 2 can be undertaken concurrently or<br />

sequentially.<br />

4.1 Module 1<br />

4.1.1 The Module 1 assessment is conducted bi-annually at a time and date determ<strong>in</strong>ed by the<br />

<strong>DDU</strong> Board of Exam<strong>in</strong>ers and is listed <strong>in</strong> the <strong>DDU</strong> section of the ASUM website<br />

(www.asum.com.au).<br />

4.1.2 The Module 1 assessment will assess all areas of the Module 1 syllabus and is available<br />

on the ASUM website (http://www.asum.com.au).<br />

4.1.3 The Module 1 assessment consists of one multiple choice question paper (MCQ) that<br />

assesses:<br />

• Physics and <strong>in</strong>strumentation<br />

• Pr<strong>in</strong>ciples of image/data collection and optimisation<br />

• Professional, ethical and legal issues<br />

4.1.4 Candidates may attempt the Module 1 assessment a maximum of three (3) times.<br />

4.2 Module 2<br />

4.2.1 Candidates may commence Module 2 from the time of acceptance <strong>in</strong>to the <strong>DDU</strong>.<br />

4.2.2 Module 2 must be successfully completed prior to undertak<strong>in</strong>g Module 3. Module 2<br />

consists of the follow<strong>in</strong>g assessments:<br />

i. Two (2) <strong>for</strong>mative Case Studies (preparatory year/s)<br />

ii. Two (2) <strong>for</strong>mative Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Supervisor Assessments (preparatory year/s)<br />

iii. Three (3) summative Case Studies (f<strong>in</strong>al year/s)<br />

iv. Three (3) summative Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Supervisor Assessments (f<strong>in</strong>al year/s)<br />

v. A Logbook with specified numbers and types of scans to be completed<br />

vi. The completion of two (2) years diagnostic ultrasound experience<br />

4.2.3 Case Studies<br />

4.2.3.1 Candidates must submit Case Studies as outl<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> the Case Study Guidel<strong>in</strong>es on the<br />

myASUM website.<br />

4.2.3.2 Candidates must submit two (2) <strong>for</strong>mative Case Studies no earlier than 6 months after<br />

enrolment <strong>in</strong>to the <strong>DDU</strong>.<br />

4.2.3.3 Candidates must submit three (3) additional summative Case Studies no earlier than<br />

twelve (12) months after enrolment <strong>in</strong>to the <strong>DDU</strong>. *<br />

*Candidates who are undertak<strong>in</strong>g the Module 3 assessment <strong>in</strong> the same year as submitt<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

Module 2 summative assessments must submit the Module 2 assessments by the dates<br />

advertised on the Academic Calendar.<br />

4.2.3.4 Case Studies must be submitted no later than the submission date advertised on the<br />

Academic Calendar.<br />

4.2.3.5 Case Studies that are not received at the ASUM office by close of bus<strong>in</strong>ess on the due<br />

date will not be marked.<br />

4.2.3.6 Case Studies must be based on studies that have been undertaken after enrolment <strong>in</strong>to<br />

the <strong>DDU</strong>.<br />

4.2.3.7 Case Studies must not conta<strong>in</strong> any personal identification that could be used to identify<br />

the patient. Case Studies conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g personal identifiers will be failed.<br />

4.2.3.8 Case Studies will be destroyed on completion of the <strong>DDU</strong>.<br />

4.2.4 Logbook<br />

4.2.4.1 Candidates must provide a logbook <strong>in</strong> the approved <strong>for</strong>mat demonstrat<strong>in</strong>g that they<br />

have per<strong>for</strong>med or observed the specified number and type of exam<strong>in</strong>ations.<br />

4.2.4.2 A m<strong>in</strong>imum of 75% of the logbook must be submitted by the due date and deemed<br />

acceptable by the <strong>DDU</strong> Board of Exam<strong>in</strong>ers prior to undertak<strong>in</strong>g Module 3. The<br />

rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g 25% must be submitted prior to be<strong>in</strong>g awarded the <strong>DDU</strong>.<br />

4.2.4.3 Cases recorded <strong>in</strong> the Logbook must be based on studies that areper<strong>for</strong>med/reported<br />

follow<strong>in</strong>g enrolment <strong>in</strong>to the <strong>DDU</strong>.<br />

4.2.4.4 Cases recorded <strong>in</strong> the Logbook must be based on studies that are per<strong>for</strong>med/reported<br />

follow<strong>in</strong>g approval of the candidate’s nom<strong>in</strong>ated Primary Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Supervisor.<br />

4.2.4.5 Cases must be per<strong>for</strong>med under the supervision of the candidate’s nom<strong>in</strong>ated Primary<br />

Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Supervisor or Associate Supervisor.<br />

4.2.5 Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Supervisor Assessments<br />

4.2.5.1 Candidates must submit two (2) <strong>for</strong>mative Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Supervisor Assessments no earlier<br />

than 6 months after enrolment <strong>in</strong>to the <strong>DDU</strong>.<br />

4.2.5.2 Candidates must submit three (3) additional summative Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Supervisor<br />

Assessments no earlier than twelve (12) months after enrolment <strong>in</strong>to the <strong>DDU</strong>. *<br />

*Candidates who are undertak<strong>in</strong>g the Module 3 assessment <strong>in</strong> the same year as submitt<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

Module 2 summative assessments must submit the Module 2 assessments by the dates<br />

advertised on the Academic Calendar.<br />

4.2.5.3 Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Supervisor Assessments must only be conducted by the candidate’s Primary<br />

Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Supervisor.<br />

4.2.5.4 Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Supervisor Assessments are to be conducted on any five (5) cases that<br />

demonstrate the breadth of knowledge and skill of the candidate.<br />

4.2.5.5 Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Supervisor assessments must be different exam<strong>in</strong>ations to those<br />

undertaken <strong>for</strong> the Case Studies<br />

4.2.5.6 The candidate's per<strong>for</strong>mance must be recorded on the Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Supervisor<br />

Assessment <strong>for</strong>m and received at ASUM office, by the due date.<br />

4.3 Module 3<br />

4.3.1 Candidates may attempt the Module 3 assessments a maximum of three (3) times.<br />

4.3.2 Written Assessment<br />

The written assessment covers the practice of diagnostic ultrasound, and <strong>in</strong>cludes<br />

questions on related anatomy, physiology, pathology and cl<strong>in</strong>ical practice.<br />

4.3.3 Oral Assessment<br />

The oral assessment (Viva voce) covers the practice of diagnostic ultrasound and<br />

<strong>in</strong>cludes questions on related anatomy, physiology, pathology and cl<strong>in</strong>ical practice.<br />

4.2.4 A pass is required <strong>in</strong> both the written and oral assessments to successfully complete<br />

Module 3<br />

4.5 Special Assessment<br />

The Chair of the <strong>DDU</strong> Board of Exam<strong>in</strong>ers, at his/her discretion, may require a candidate<br />

to complete a special assessment <strong>in</strong> addition to those prescribed <strong>in</strong> this section, or as a<br />

substitute <strong>for</strong> an element of assessment prescribed <strong>in</strong> this section. The <strong>for</strong>mat of the<br />

special assessment will be determ<strong>in</strong>ed by the <strong>DDU</strong> Board of Exam<strong>in</strong>ers.<br />

5. Completion<br />

5.1 To successfully complete the <strong>DDU</strong> pass grades must be achieved <strong>in</strong> all sections of<br />

Module 1, Module 2 and Module 3 with<strong>in</strong> the prescribed time limits.<br />

5.2 Candidates are required to present <strong>for</strong> and pass the Module 1 assessment with<strong>in</strong> two (2)<br />

years of enrolment <strong>in</strong>to the <strong>DDU</strong>.<br />

5.3 Candidates are required to complete all components of Module 2 with<strong>in</strong> three (3) years of<br />

complet<strong>in</strong>g Module 1.<br />

5.4 Candidates must attempt all components of Module 3 with<strong>in</strong> three (3) years of complet<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Module 1.<br />

5.5 The <strong>DDU</strong> qualification must be successfully completed with<strong>in</strong> a total of six (6) years from<br />

the orig<strong>in</strong>al enrolment.<br />

5.4 The <strong>DDU</strong> Board of Exam<strong>in</strong>ers may cancel the enrolment of any candidate who fails to<br />

meet any of these time limits.<br />

5.5 The Chair of the <strong>DDU</strong> Board of Exam<strong>in</strong>ers, at his/her discretion, may vary these<br />

requirements <strong>in</strong> cases where special circumstances are demonstrated.<br />

6. Deferrals<br />

6.1 Candidates may apply to defer sitt<strong>in</strong>g a <strong>DDU</strong> assessment <strong>for</strong> a maximum of one year.<br />

6.2 Candidates can only defer one (1) <strong>DDU</strong> assessment dur<strong>in</strong>g their period of enrolment.<br />

6.2 Applications <strong>for</strong> deferral must be <strong>in</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g us<strong>in</strong>g the prescribed <strong>for</strong>m and be<br />

accompanied by full payment of the prescribed fee.<br />

6.3 The date of deferral is the date on which the <strong>DDU</strong> Board of Exam<strong>in</strong>ers approves the<br />

deferral.<br />

6.4 A candidate who defers and subsequently withdraws will not receive any refund of fees.<br />

6.5 Deferrals beyond one year may be granted at the discretion of the <strong>DDU</strong> Board of<br />

Exam<strong>in</strong>ers, only <strong>in</strong> cases where exceptional circumstances are demonstrated.<br />

7. Withdrawals<br />

7.1 Candidates may withdraw by writ<strong>in</strong>g to the Chair of the <strong>DDU</strong> Board of Exam<strong>in</strong>ers. The<br />

date of withdrawal is the date on which the written notice is received at the ASUM office.<br />

7.2 When a candidate withdraws from an assessment more than twelve (12) weeks be<strong>for</strong>e<br />

the date of the assessment ASUM will refund 70% of the assessment fee. When a<br />

candidate withdraws from an assessment less than twelve (12) weeks and more than six<br />

(6) weeks be<strong>for</strong>e the written assessment ASUM will refund 40% of the assessment fee.<br />

7.3 A candidate who fails to present <strong>for</strong> assessment will be considered to have withdrawn<br />

without notice. A fail will be recorded and no refund will be given.<br />

7.4 No other refunds will be given.<br />

8. Term<strong>in</strong>ation of Candidacy<br />

The <strong>DDU</strong> Board of Exam<strong>in</strong>ers may term<strong>in</strong>ate the candidacy of any candidate who:<br />

8.1 Fails to make satisfactory progress.<br />

8.2 Fails to complete each Module of the <strong>DDU</strong> with<strong>in</strong> the prescribed time limits.<br />

8.3 Is found to be <strong>in</strong> breach of assessment conditions.<br />

8.4 Is disqualified from his/her tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g program by their College.<br />

8.5 Is disqualified from practis<strong>in</strong>g medic<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

8.6 Ceases to meet any of the requirements <strong>for</strong> admission to the <strong>DDU</strong>.<br />

9. Assessment Venues<br />

9.1 Written and oral assessments are conducted <strong>in</strong> major centres <strong>in</strong> Australia and New<br />

Zealand as determ<strong>in</strong>ed by the <strong>DDU</strong> Board of Exam<strong>in</strong>ers tak<strong>in</strong>g consideration of the<br />

distribution of candidates.<br />

9.2 ASUM will advise candidates of their allocated assessment centres at least four (4)<br />

weeks prior to each assessment event.<br />

10. Assessment Conditions<br />

10.1 All <strong>DDU</strong> assessments will be conducted <strong>in</strong> English.<br />

10.2 Candidates must obey any reasonable <strong>in</strong>struction from Exam<strong>in</strong>ers.<br />

10.3 Candidates may not br<strong>in</strong>g to the written or oral assessments any material other than that<br />

which they have been <strong>in</strong>structed to br<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

10.4 Candidates must not br<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to the assessment room any electronic devices such as<br />

calculators, mobile telephones or any other device capable of stor<strong>in</strong>g data.<br />

10.5 Candidates may not take any assessment material from the assessment room.<br />

10.6 Candidates who arrive late <strong>for</strong> a written assessment may be allowed to use the unexpired<br />

portion of the allotted time to complete the assessment, but will not be allowed any<br />

additional time to compensate <strong>for</strong> their lateness.<br />

10.7 Candidates who arrive late <strong>for</strong> an oral assessment will be deemed to have withdrawn<br />

without notice.<br />

10.8 Candidates may not leave the assessment room be<strong>for</strong>e the expiry of the allotted time<br />

except with the permission from the Chief Supervisor.<br />

10.9 Candidates who do not abide by assessment conditions may be penalised by be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

denied credit <strong>for</strong> the assessment. Repeated <strong>in</strong>fr<strong>in</strong>gements may result <strong>in</strong> expulsion from<br />

the <strong>DDU</strong>.<br />

11. Advanced Stand<strong>in</strong>g<br />

11.1 Candidates who have contributed to ultrasonography through teach<strong>in</strong>g and published<br />

orig<strong>in</strong>al work may be granted a modified assessment at the discretion of the <strong>DDU</strong> Board<br />

of Exam<strong>in</strong>ers.<br />

11.2 Candidates who have been engaged <strong>in</strong> the practice of diagnostic ultrasound <strong>for</strong> a period<br />

of not less than five (5) years may be granted a modified assessment at the discretion of<br />

the <strong>DDU</strong> Board of Exam<strong>in</strong>ers.<br />

11.3 Candidates who hold an advanced qualification <strong>in</strong> another jurisdiction may be granted a<br />

modified assessment at the discretion of the <strong>DDU</strong> Board of Exam<strong>in</strong>ers.<br />

11.4 Candidates hold<strong>in</strong>g the FRANZCR are offered exemption from the Module 1 assessment<br />

only.<br />

12. Communications<br />

12.1 Candidates must provide ASUM with a current email address that <strong>DDU</strong> <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation may<br />

be sent to. Candidates must notify ASUM if they change their email address.<br />

12.2 All deliberations and mark<strong>in</strong>g notes of the <strong>DDU</strong> exam<strong>in</strong>ers shall rema<strong>in</strong> private and<br />

confidential at all times.<br />

12.3 No communication concern<strong>in</strong>g the conduct, content, adm<strong>in</strong>istration or outcome of the<br />

assessment may occur between a candidate and the exam<strong>in</strong>ers from the time of the<br />

assessment until the ASUM Council publishes the results.<br />

12.4 Any communication concern<strong>in</strong>g the content or adm<strong>in</strong>istration of the assessment must be<br />

<strong>in</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g and addressed to the Chair of the <strong>DDU</strong> Board of Exam<strong>in</strong>ers, PO BOX 943,<br />

Crows Nest NSW 1585. Such communications must be received at the ASUM office<br />

with<strong>in</strong> seven days of the assessment.<br />

12.5 No assessment results may be sought prior to publication by the ASUM Council.<br />

12.6 Where a candidate fails an oral assessment, the <strong>DDU</strong> Board of Exam<strong>in</strong>ers will provide<br />

the candidate with <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation to assist his/her preparation <strong>for</strong> re-assessment.<br />

13. Reconsideration<br />

13.1 Candidates who are dissatisfied with their assessment result should apply to the Chair of<br />

the <strong>DDU</strong> Board of Exam<strong>in</strong>ers with<strong>in</strong> seven (7) days of the publication of the results<br />

stat<strong>in</strong>g the facts which the Chair should consider when determ<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g whether or not to<br />

uphold the orig<strong>in</strong>al results.<br />

13.2 Candidates who are dissatisfied with any other decision of the <strong>DDU</strong> Board of Exam<strong>in</strong>ers<br />

should apply to the Chair of the <strong>DDU</strong> Board of Exam<strong>in</strong>ers with<strong>in</strong> seven (7) days of the<br />

date on which notification of the result was sent, stat<strong>in</strong>g the facts which the Chair should<br />

consider when determ<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g whether or not to uphold the orig<strong>in</strong>al decision.<br />

13.3 Applications <strong>for</strong> reconsideration must be made on the prescribed <strong>for</strong>m and be<br />

accompanied by full payment of the prescribed fee.<br />

13.4 Applications <strong>for</strong> reconsideration will be acknowledged when they are received at the<br />

ASUM office.<br />

13.5 Applications <strong>for</strong> reconsideration will be considered and determ<strong>in</strong>ed expeditiously by the<br />

Chair of the <strong>DDU</strong> Board of Exam<strong>in</strong>ers. In determ<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the matter, the Chair has discretion<br />

to use any available <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation but is not required to consider any <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation except<br />

that provided by the applicant.<br />

13.6 Applicants <strong>for</strong> reconsideration will receive <strong>for</strong>mal, written notification of the results of their<br />

applications.<br />

14. Appeals<br />

14.1 An application to appeal a decision of the <strong>DDU</strong> Board of Exam<strong>in</strong>ers will only be accepted<br />

once the reconsideration procedures prescribed <strong>in</strong> these regulations have been<br />

exhausted.<br />

14.2 An appeal aga<strong>in</strong>st a decision of the <strong>DDU</strong> Board of Exam<strong>in</strong>ers must be addressed to the<br />

ASUM President and received at the ASUM office with<strong>in</strong> twenty-one (21) days of the date<br />

of the <strong>for</strong>mal advice of the result of the reconsideration application.<br />

14.3 An appeal will be determ<strong>in</strong>ed by the President or at the discretion of the President, a<br />

person or group of people appo<strong>in</strong>ted by the President.<br />

14.4 With<strong>in</strong> twenty-one (21) days of receiv<strong>in</strong>g an appeal the President will advise the applicant<br />

as to the procedure that will be applied <strong>in</strong> determ<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the appeal and the expected<br />

timetable <strong>for</strong> the determ<strong>in</strong>ation of the appeal.<br />

14.5 An appeal will only address those matters raised by the applicant <strong>in</strong> the reconsideration<br />

application.<br />

14.6 In determ<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g an appeal the President has discretion to use any available <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation<br />

but is not required to consider any <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation except that provided by the applicant with<br />

the reconsideration application.<br />

14.7 Applicants <strong>for</strong> appeals will receive <strong>for</strong>mal, written notification of the results of their<br />

applications.<br />

14.8 The decision(s) aris<strong>in</strong>g from the appeal process will be f<strong>in</strong>al.<br />

14.9 Details of the appeal procedure <strong>for</strong> lodg<strong>in</strong>g an appeal may be obta<strong>in</strong>ed by writ<strong>in</strong>g to the<br />

Chief Executive Officer of the <strong>Australasian</strong> <strong>Society</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Ultrasound</strong> <strong>in</strong> Medic<strong>in</strong>e.<br />
