<strong>Westminster</strong> Hires Offers Six M.Ed. New<br />

in<br />

Education<br />

Beginning this summer, <strong>Westminster</strong><br />

<strong>College</strong> will offer a master’s degree in<br />

adventure education.<br />

<strong>The</strong> new graduate program blends<br />

<strong>Westminster</strong> <strong>College</strong>’s faith heritage,<br />

leadership training, and outdoor experiential<br />

components into an innovative program for<br />

classroom teachers, business leaders, trainers,<br />

youth workers, camp staff, outdoor<br />

professionals, and others who are interested<br />

in learning alternative means of teaching and<br />

learning through adventure programming.<br />

“We believe that education, which models<br />

life as an adventure, will transform the<br />

world,” said Steven Montgomery, director<br />

of <strong>Westminster</strong>’s Titan Traverse and<br />

employee of the Coalition for Christian<br />

Outreach. “Courses in adventure education<br />

will combine academic thought and content<br />

in tangible contexts with practical<br />

applications. Students will study to learn<br />

adventure education<br />

from the perspective of<br />

three anchor points:<br />

conviction, character, and<br />

community.”<br />

Recreation and Play,<br />

Leadership in Adventure<br />

Education, Effective<br />

Group Development,<br />

Critical Issues in<br />

Adventure Education,<br />

Design and Facilitation,<br />

and Adventure Education<br />

Administration.<br />

Students can choose a master’s degree<br />

track or a non-degree track, according to<br />

Montgomery. <strong>The</strong> M.Ed. track requires the<br />

New Wilmington<br />

History Chronicle<br />

Now Available<br />

A new book covering New Wilmington’s<br />

long and rich history is now available.<br />

<strong>The</strong> History of New Wilmington, 1797-<br />

2003: <strong>The</strong> Story of a Small Town was compiled<br />

by a committee that included former<br />

<strong>Westminster</strong> <strong>College</strong> professors and administrators,<br />

including Delber McKee, professor<br />

of history emeritus; Dewey DeWitt, professor<br />

of chemistry emeritus and curator of<br />

the <strong>College</strong> archives; Paul Gamble ’32, associate<br />

professor of English emeritus and<br />

<strong>College</strong> historian; Alan Sternbergh ’51,<br />

former director of the <strong>College</strong> placement office;<br />

and the late Eugene Sharkey, former<br />

professor of history.<br />

<strong>The</strong> 12-chapter book includes over 100<br />

photographs and explores the history of the<br />

borough, including sections on local government,<br />

civic and community organizations,<br />

churches and the Amish, Native Americans,<br />

family histories, and, of course, <strong>Westminster</strong><br />

<strong>College</strong>.<br />

<strong>The</strong> cost of the book is $29.95. Order<br />

forms are available from the <strong>Westminster</strong><br />

alumni office or in the <strong>Westminster</strong> Bookstore.<br />
