year, choosing the most suitable programme for his/her needs. This
applies to the following fellowship programmes: CAS (China), CNPq (Brazil), DBT, CSIR
and S.N. Bose (India), Research & Advanced Training and Postgraduate Training
Fellowships for Women Scientists in Sub-Saharan Africa and Least Developed
Countries (LDC) at Centres of Excellence in the South (TWOWS).

for Postgraduate Studies in India
Information
The Department of Biotechnology (DBT) of the Ministry of Science and Technology, India – www.dbt.gov.in
– and The Academy of Sciences for the Developing World [formerly Third World Academy of Sciences]
(TWAS) – www.twas.org – have instituted a fellowship programme for foreign scholars from developing
countries who wish to pursue research towards a Ph.D in Biotechnology.
Conditions
The fellowships will be tenable at key biotechnology research institutions in India for a period of up to three
years at a monthly stipend of INR 8,000 (Indian Rupees) per month for the 1st and 2nd year, and INR 9,000
per month for the 3rd year. The monthly stipend will not be convertible into foreign currency. In addition, the
fellowship holder will receive HRA (House Rent Allowance) and medical coverage (for minor ailments only).
Fellowship holders are therefore advised to make their own arrangements for more comprehensive medical
insurance. Moreover, the fellowships do not provide any support for family members.
A contingency grant of INR 20,000 per fellowship holder per annum will be provided to the host institute/
laboratory in India for study tours undertaken within India in the interest of his/her research work and/or for
the purchase of study material. For a period less than one year, the grant is admissible on a pro rata basis.
The cost of international travel (economy class and shortest route) will be met by TWAS.
The fellowship holder should not take up other assignments during the period of his/her fellowship.
Applicants must be accepted at a biotechnology institution in India in order to be eligible for the fellowship.
The deadline for receipt of all requests is 31 August of each year.
Eligibility
To be eligible for these fellowships, candidates must meet the following criteria:
• Maximum age 30 years;
• Minimum qualification requirement is a Master's degree in science or engineering or an equivalent
degree;
• Candidates must be nationals of a developing country (other than India) and living there;
• Fellowships for Ph.D will be awarded only to candidates who are already registered for Ph.D in a university
in their home country or willing to register in India.
• Applicants must be accepted at a biotechnology institution in India in order to be eligible for the
fellowship (see sample acceptance letter).

of a suitable host institution. However, candidates are free to choose an Indian biotechnology institution that
does not appear on the list.
