My One-Day Membership In The Bop
If you hear anyone refer to you or a friend as a BOPer, a MOPer or even a FOPer, don’t
immediately become defensive. No, I don’t refer to the military, where everything seems to be in
acronyms. However, in some respect, the members of the run-walk-run group, the BOP - as the
Back of the Packers call themselves – have a language all of their own, and like to refer to and
categorize other runners on their running/walking abilities and the speed in which they can
cover any given distance.
So, on one fall afternoon, I was free and heard the leader of the BOP (there is an
oxymoron), Pam Gardiner, talk about a get-together her group had been planning for the same
day. While she talked, she invited me to come, too.
Here, I have to mention that I had not been associated with the BOPers at all. Also, I
didn’t want to intrude and disturb their group dynamics, besides not really knowing too many
people, personally, either. However, it sounded interesting, and I was a bachelor for the evening
and, thus, free, and thought why not.
I went home, baked some of my party-famous pretzels, and headed toward the,
unknown, oh-so-scary, BOP dungeon, hosted that night by Connie Chestnutt.
You might ask yourself what does he have in common with the BOPers It’s a relevant
question!
Being somewhat competitive, and running in mile paces different than those of any of
the BOPers, we only have one thing in common – so I thought; the members of the Back of the
Pack and I, loosely, use the same running system – we run-walk-run – even though in quite
different intervals.
Pam had known for a while that I had been using my own Jeff Galloway system for
well over a year. I call it the ‚Galloway-inspired run-walk-run system‛, which is actually quite a
bit different than that of Jeff’s. This system has allowed me to greatly improve on my own
personal best times in virtually every distance, from a 10K to a marathon. My finishing times
improved so much that I qualified - with a good deal of cushion - for the 2013 Boston Marathon,
and I will be training toward that goal with the RWM Boston Marathon training group starting
in December. (BTW, you don’t have to run Boston to join this organized training group; it’s an
advanced running class for everyone who is training for a spring marathon.)
Once I arrived at the party house, I was wondering if people, including the host, knew
that I was invited, too. Some might even have questioned who I was. The welcome, however,
was very genuine and heartfelt. And, as soon as they saw that I brought food, too, everything
was good.
During the next few hours, not only did we eat very well and a lot (there might also
have been some drinking involved), but stories were told, new friendships were created, and a
bridge of mutual respect was built from both ends of running speed spectrum. There, too, is
where I heard and learned all the acronyms mentioned in the beginning of this article. MOP =
Middle of the Pack, FOP = Front of the Pack. Personally, I don’t consider myself a super fast,
front-of-pack-kind-of-a-guy, however, that is what they called me: a FOPer. When I heard it first,
I think I wished that person ‚Gesundheit‛, only to find out that they referred to me, in a nonjudgmental,
non-derogatory way.
Over the next several hours, I learned that the BOPers are as dedicated to our sport, and
as hardcore as some of the fastest runners - only slower - but with tremendous determination
and stamina. Every one of the BOPers I talked with that night had their own story, their own
limitations, their own struggles, and their own goals. I don’t want to get too philosophical now,
but what determines the best
Who is to say that the fastest person is working any harder in training or in competition
than those who are physically not able to run at the same speeds, but who also train for hours at
a time, day in and day out to achieve their elusive, individual goals. A sub six-minute mile for
one person might be the same accomplishment as a sub 14-minute mile for someone else.
However, the Back of the Pack guys and gals do one thing as well as anyone: throwing
a great party.
I’m so happy I went to that get-together that evening! Ever since, we all have been
exchanging a great deal of encouragement towards another, and I, for sure, learned a great deal
of respect for the BOPers, and what they do. A nice bonus during the evening was that I never
felt out of place, or unwelcomed; it was quite the contrary!
Towards the end of the evening, Pam surprised me with a little speech and a very nice
gesture – she awarded me with that well-known, green BOP handkerchief, and I became an
honorary member of the BOP and a member for the day. Thanks, Pam, that was very cute!
In conclusion, the BOPers are a welcoming, fun bunch of people, and they don’t have
harsh, exclusive membership requirements. However, they are serious about getting in their
miles and their regular exercise, and it seems they have a good time while doing so. To try them
out of be part of the BOPers, all you need to do is bring food!
If you ever want to know more about the BOPers, the Galloway method, or my runwalk-run
system, just contact Pam or myself.
No matter how fast or slow you might be, keep on moving forward as the alternative is
not really an alternative after all.
Run Wild Missoula Runner Spotlight
Meet RWM member Brenda Garren, 46, married and mother of two girls.
Born in Randall, MN, Brenda has lived most of her life in Missoula or
Frenchtown.
Brenda has always loved running, but during the last 3 years has
developed a true passion for it. She credits joining Run Wild Missoula "for
playing a tremendous role in that".
Currently her favorite places to run are the trails, especially Crazy
Canyon to the top of Mount Sentinel. "What a rewarding view!" Attending
Mike Foote's trail running class introduced her to a different trail every run
and a chance to meet new people to run with. "Mike did a great job with the
class".
In addition to running, she does Body Combat, spins, lifts weights
and likes to train for and compete in triathlons. Brenda is a great role model
for active daughters, whom she loves watching compete in their own sports.
Go Brenda!
Run Wild Missoula News
Letter from the Executive Director: Have You Completed Your Running
Goal this Year Introducing a New Challenge for 2013.
As the end of the year approaches some of you are working hard to complete
your running and walking goals. Some of you are feverishly running so you
can log 1200 or 2000 miles by the end of the year in order to be part of the 1200
/ 2000 Mile Club and get a pair of compression socks as a gift for your efforts.
13
Others have one more Run Wild Missoula race to participate in to be part of the RWM Race
Club and to get a complimentary hoodie sweatshirt.
By our most recent count 10 members have already logged 2000 miles and 26 have
logged 1200 miles. Many more of you are on your way to 1200 miles. Over 70 members have
participated in 7 or more races, and over 40 of you just have to participate in the New Year’s Eve
2-Mile Prediction Run in order to log 7 RWM races.
You should feel proud of your accomplishments no matter what your goal for 2012
was and if you didn’t complete your goal there’s always next year. Run Wild Missoula will
again offer in 2013 the 1200 and 2000 Mile Club and the Race Club where everyone who
participates in 7 or more RWM races will receive a prize. We encourage you to log your miles
and count your races in 2013 even if you don’t know whether you can be part of these clubs.
Run Wild Missoula is also introducing a new program for members and way for you to
compete with one another: The Race Challenge Series. Here’s how it works:
Run three out of four races in the fall or spring Race Challenge Series and we'll keep
track of your score. The top three male and female finishers will receive a super cool prize. (We
don’t know what yet, but we promise you will like it.) Scoring will be done similar to a crosscountry
race. If you come in first place you'll get 1 point, if you come in 30th place you'll get 30
points. The person with the lowest score at the end of each series wins. Participants have the
option of participating in all four races each series and can eliminate their worst score since only
three out of the four races count in the challenge. Participants must run the specified distances
in the events. For example, some events have a 10K and a 5K, but we have indicated which
distance qualifies for the Race Challenge Series. We have attempted to pick a variety of
distances.
You must be a current Run Wild Missoula member in order to participate. You must
also indicate on your race application that you are participating in the Race Challenge. If you're
not sure if you're going to be able to participate in three races in the series, please mark that
you're participating anyway. It’s easier to delete you from the challenge than add you later.
someone contact) the run leader or Runner’s Edge (if that is where the run is ending- other
location if it’s ending somewhere else) so we are not out looking for you.
7. You are responsible for your safety while you are running. Obey all traffic signs and rules.
Pay attention to your surroundings.
8. If you are running on a road, please face traffic and run no more than two abreast. If there is
Participation in the 1200 and 2000 Mile Club and a cool gift
The gift for the 1200/2000 Mile Club in 2012 will be compression socks. Participation in the club also includes bragging rights and your
name printed on our web site and our newsletter, Running Wild. 1200 may like a lot of miles, but if you run 23 miles a week you will
get there. To log your miles, login to runwildmissoula.org with your username and password. Visit the 1200/2000 Mile Club page at
http://www.runwildmissoula.org/index.php/fuseaction/1200mileClub.main.htm and click "Add Mileage Entry." Your entries will show
up at the bottom of the page. You may log your miles daily, weekly, monthly-- whatever works for you. Just be sure to start logging
your miles before August 31, 2012. (This is so we know how many participants to expect and how many 1200 /2000 Mile Club gifts to
order in advance.) If you accidentally enter too many miles, just subtract the number of miles you enter by using the minus symbol on
your keyboard.
Also for you Hoodie Hunters, for those who have completed (7+) and for those still in the hunt (6) – make sure you fill out
your hoodie size from the survey sent out last week. If you have 6 races, you also should have completed the survey question
didn't see the survey in your inbox, let at sue@runwildmissoula.org know.
