• As cochairperson of the Organizing Committee and Academic Committee, Dr. Simopoulos helped organize

April 24-27, 2002, which is the first of its kind to be held in China. The goal of the conference is to review
the research on essential fatty acids in human nutrition and health and to expand the technology and

• On October 31 and November 1, 2002, Dr. Simopoulos gave lectures on “Variation in dietary response –
how do genes and diet relate” at hospitals in Durban and Tygerberg, South Africa, respectively, and was a
Visiting Professor at the University of Western Cape and the University of Stellenbosch. At the National
Nutrition Congress, held November 5-9, 2002 in Potchefstroom, South Africa, Dr. Simopoulos spoke on

• November 30 – December 2, 2006, Dr. Simopoulos cochaired the 2006 International Congress & Exhibition
on Nutrition, Fitness and Health, held in Shanghai, China. This congress was coorganized by the Shanghai
Center for Scientific & Technological Exchange with Foreign Countries, the Center for Public Nutrition and
Development of China and The Center for Genetics, Nutrition and Health. The Stavros S. Niarchos
Foundation was a major supporter of the congress. Dr. Simopoulos gave the keynote opening address on
“Cultural Aspects of Diet and Physical Activity in Greece”.

• On December 10, 2006, the Ambassador of Greece, Mr. Alexandros P. Mallias, hosted a Symposium on
“The Declaration of Olympia – On Olympism, Sports and Nutrition” at the Embassy of Greece in

• Dr. Simopoulos attended the Scientific Advisory Board Meeting of the Nutrilite Health Institute at the
Center for Optimal Health, Buena Park, California, February 4 – 6, 2007.
• Dr. Simopoulos will be a Visiting Professor at the University of Glasgow, Glasgow, Scotland, March 26 –
30, 2007. She will examine a PhD student on her thesis “Developmental changes in adiposity in toddlers
and preschoolers in the GENESIS study and associations with selected candidate genes.” She will also give
a seminar on either “Evolutionary Aspects of Diet and the Omega-6/Omega-3 Fatty Acid Balance” or
“What is So Special About the Diet of Greece The Scientific Evidence.”

Manchester, New Hampshire (dates to be confirmed in the spring).
