Russo’s Reflections…
I hope everyone had a safe, fun, relaxing and blessed
Thanksgiving Day.
Advent Season
December is a very special time of the year. We begin
the month with the Season of Advent, which also begins
the new Liturgical Year of 2012. Throughout this year
we will hear about the life of Christ from the Gospel of
Mark, Cycle B.
The Season of Advent has a two-fold character: as a
season to prepare for Christmas when Christ’s first
coming to us is remembered, and as a season when that
remembrance directs our hearts and minds to await
Christs’ second coming at the end of time. Advent is
thus a period of devout joyful expectation. Advent is a
time to recall the early Christians: Maranatha! “Come
Lord Jesus!”
Roman Missal III
Priest: The Lord be with you.
People: And with your spirit.
This weekend Catholics in the United States and
English speaking countries throughout the world
welcome the new text, the 3rd edition of the Roman
Missal that was promulgated by Pope John Paul II in
2000. We have been preparing for this day for almost a
year now.
Change is good. I realize most of us do not like change,
however, if we do not change there will be no growth.
Why the change One of the reasons is to have a more
correct and precise translation capable of expressing the
full meaning of the Latin text. Another, to foster a
greater appreciation and love for the Eucharist in our
own lives. The 3rd Edition of the Roman Missal is a
great opportunity for all of us to be more attentive to
the words we are reciting and gain a better
understanding of the Mass. When talking about the new
Roman Missal, please keep these words in mind:

ADOPT A FAMILY - If you, your family, your work group,
social group, etc. are interested in adopting a family in need
for the holidays now is the time to put your request in.
Deadline to request a family is Dec. 5th.
If you know of a family in-need please let me know. Remind
them I will keep their name anonymous but I would need to
call them for more details.
GREENVILLE HOMELESS TEENS - this year the
Angel Tree will also include the homeless teens and lowincome
families in the Greenville area. We are seeking to
provide a meal over the holiday and give each teen a bag of
food to replace their school meal. If you would like to
contribute to this please place your donations in the food
baskets and mark them GREENVILLE. We need simple
foods such as peanut butter, crackers, soups, granola bars,
cereal, fruit cups, potato chips, pop tarts, mac & cheese,
ravioli, gorp, applesauce, drink boxes, personal care items etc.
Please have your donations to OLC by Dec. 18th for the
Greenville project.
PAINT A BOWL - Support Soup’s On For All by painting a
bowl on Jan. 12 from 5:00 - 9:00 at Kateri Lodge. All ages
are welcome. Refreshments provided. Cost is $9.00 per
bowl.

“Light of the World” – December 12

Holiday SCRIP Sales - It is time again for our holiday
SCRIP sales to start. SCRIP gift cards are perfect for
holiday gifts, birthdays, thank you gifts, shower gifts
and daily purchases. We have many cards available for
purchase after 9:00 and 11:00AM Masses through
Sunday, December 18th. Restaurant, grocery, movie,
retail stores and gas cards are only some of what will be
available. All SCRIP retailers can be seen on the
Shopwithscrip.com web site. Weekly on-line orders for
any of these are placed Mondays by 9:00AM and would
be available by Thursday afternoon in the Parish Office
or after that week's Sunday Mass. Payment to OLCEF
would be expected at the time of pickup. Please help

REMINDER: Advent Retreat is still open for
students looking for a GREAT weekend. Retreat takes
place at YMCA Camp Pinewood, Dec. 2-4. It will be
lead by the NET Team of young adults traveling across
the country for catholic retreats. Plenty of fun activities
planned. Reserve your spot soon!! Permission slips
outside the faith formation office.
During Advent the Elementary Faith Formation classes
will have a good deeds manger in the commons. Help
us to fill the manger with “straws” of good deeds. When
you come to Mass have your child write
on a strip of paper the good deed they
have performed during the past week.

Knights of Columbus Brunch on December 4th
Following both Masses on December 4th, the Knights
will host a delicious six course brunch. We will be
serving three new items: Spanish and Irish casseroles

dieters, both regular and low calorie syrup will be

CONSOLATA GUILD QUILT RAFFLE - Once
again we are raffling a beautiful homemade quilt to
benefit the Consolata Missionary Sisters. The quilt will be

The Grand Rapids Chamber Choir presents
“Sounds of Christmas” Saturday, November 26 at
7:30PM and Sunday November 27 at 3:00PM at the
Basilica of St. Adalbert, 701 4 th Street N.W. Grand

highlights a mix of great classics like “O Magnum

Are you looking for a way to serve Christ Bella Vista
MOPS is looking for caring and nurturing adults to
provide childcare during MOPS (Mothers of
Preschoolers) meetings. We meet every other Tuesday
morning from 8:30 am to 11:15 am. This program runs
through the school year and gives mothers and children
of all faiths a place to encourage family values, share
God's word, and support mothers and children through
fellowship. We appreciate volunteers but can give a
reasonable pay to those needing to justify the value of
