Intelliglobe <strong>Pen</strong> <strong>Update</strong> <strong>Instructions</strong><br />
Suggested minimum requirements for updating the Intellipen for the Intelliglobe are:<br />
Hardware requirements:<br />
- Computer hosting USB 1.0 or newer connectivity.<br />
- A male Mini-B to Male A USB cable, included with Intelliglobe.<br />
- Intellipen.<br />
- 500 MB of HD disk free space, in order to update pen drive.<br />

Operating System requirements:<br />
- Any version of Windows 2000 or newer (XP, Vista, Win7) with current service packs applied.<br />
- Mac OS X 10.4 or newer with current services packs applied<br />
- Any BSD, Linux, Solaris and/or UNIX operating system that supports USB device discovery, web browsing and<br />
read/write for FAT32 file system.<br />
Recommended software:<br />
- Adobe Acrobat PDF for viewing PDF <strong>Instructions</strong>.<br />
- A file Download manager and/or accelerator that allows for resumption of downloads. Typically the update<br />
file can be in excess of 150 MB. If you were to lose your internet connection while downloading you may be<br />
required to restart the download from the beginning when not using a download manger and/or accelerator.<br />
Please know some newer Internet Browsers allow for resuming of downloads that have been stopped mid-way<br />
thru the download process.<br />
Overview:<br />
The Intelliglobe <strong>Pen</strong> is a simple USB device, with either 512MB or 1GB of Flash memory. On this USB Flash memory is a<br />
file named: globeapp.bin, that can be updated when needed. Overview of the process to update Intellipen is as follows:<br />
1) Download the update archive for the Intellipen.<br />
2) Connect Intellipen to your computer via USB cable provided.<br />
3) Power on Intellipen.<br />
4) The Intellipen USB flash drive will be auto-discovered by your computer and will be made available for use.<br />
5) Extract the globeapp.bin file, from the downloaded in step 1, to your local computer’s hard drive.<br />
6) Copy the globeapp.bin file that you extracted in step 5 to the Intellipen USB flash memory.<br />
Upon completion of the download it is suggested that you extract the globeapp.bin file to your local hard drive and then copy the extracted globeapp.bin file to<br />
the Intellipen USB Flash device. As compared to extracting the globeapp.bin directly to the Intellipen USB flash device from the update archive you<br />
downloaded in step 1.

Detailed instructions specific to Windows OS:<br />
The Intellipen for the Intelliglobe contains a simple USB device, with 512MB or 1GB of Flash memory that allows for the<br />
update of a file named globeapp.bin. By updating the file globeapp.bin on your Intellipen you are able to take advantage<br />
of additional educational material and political updates specific to changes in one or more countries.<br />
1) Download Intelliglobe <strong>Update</strong>:<br />
a) Navigate to the Intelliglobe website: http://www.replogleglobes.com/intelliglobe<br />
b) Select <strong>Update</strong> <strong>Pen</strong> page to navigate to available update files.<br />
c) From this website you are able to view the available updates for downloading to your Intellipen.<br />
d) Select the appropriate file you wish to update to your pen. You will be asked to save this file, make sure to note<br />
the save location of the update file for future instruction. In this example we will save to the Windows Desktop.<br />
2) Connect Intelliglobe <strong>Pen</strong> to computer via USB cable (Type A Male to Mini B Male)<br />
a) This requires cable type: A Male to Mini B Male USB cable provided with purchase of Intelliglobe.<br />
b) Next attach the Intellipen to the Mini USB cable and then to the computers USB’s port.<br />
c) Power on the Intellipen only after cable is connected to your computer.<br />
3) Let the computer auto-discover the Intellipen’s USB flash memory. Please make note of the Drive letter assigned<br />
to the Intellipen USB flash memory device, as we will need this in step 6d.
4) If in the event during the auto-discovery of the Intellipen you were NOT able<br />
to determine the drive letter assigned to the Intellipen USB flash device,<br />
follow the below steps 4a-4e. Otherwise continue to Step 5.<br />
a) To determine the drive letter assigned to the Intellipen USB flash drive,<br />
open My Computer.<br />
b) Be sure the Intellipen is Turned ON.<br />
c) From the Windows Start Menu, select RUN.<br />
d) Type in three dots (periods) in a row “…” within the Run window and then<br />
select OK<br />
e) The My Computer window will display. You will notice that you should<br />
have a new device in Removable Storage section of My Computer. If you<br />
have one or more removable devices you can determine that the device<br />
containing globeapp.bin file as the storage device specific to the<br />
Intellipen USB device.<br />
f) Take note of the Disk drive letter for the Intellipen USB Device. This<br />
example shows disk letter of F: for the Intellipen USB device.<br />
5) Once the update archive completes downloading from step 1a-1d, extract<br />
the globeapp.bin file from this download. Your method for extracting the file<br />
may vary and depends on any 3 rd party archive tools you may have installed on your<br />
computer (WinZip, WinRAR, 7-Zip, etc…).<br />
a) Locate the archive file downloaded in steps 1a-1d. In this example we<br />
downloaded to the Windows Desktop.<br />
b) Right mouse click on the file and choose Explore.<br />
c) Windows explorer will open the archive. Select File, Extract All….<br />
d) The Extraction Wizard will step you thru the process of extracting<br />
globeapp.bin from the archive.<br />
i. Next,<br />
ii. Select the Browse button to set the destination for extracted file.<br />
iii. Select the Desktop for the destination and OK to continue<br />
iv. Select Next,<br />
v. Be sure Show Extracted Files is check and click Finish. Continue to step 6.<br />

6) Once the extraction is completed, a new window will open showing the desktop containing the globeapp.bin file that<br />
was extracted in step 5d. Copy this file to the Intellipen flash USB drive device.<br />
e) Locate and select the globeapp.bin file from your desktop.<br />
f) Right mouse click on the file and choose Copy.<br />
g) Navigate to the Intellipen USB flash drive. Select My Computer on the left side of the Explorer window.<br />
h) Locate the Removable device we identified as the Intellipen USB flash drive in steps 3 and 4.<br />
i) Double click on the Intellipen USB flash drive to open its contents.<br />
j) You should see an existing file globeapp.bin that will need to be replaced.<br />
k) Select EDIT, PASTE from the menu to copy the globeapp.bin file from the desktop to your Intellipen.<br />
l) You may be prompted to replace the existing file named globeapp.bin, Select YES to replace.<br />
m) The copy process will take a few minutes. There is no danger in the Intellipen turning off during the copy<br />
process assuming you have good batteries.
Trouble Shooting<br />
My Intellipen USB flash drive is not available or does not show up on my Windows computer.<br />
Standard Windows trouble shooting (low tech)<br />
� Confirm the device is power on. Device requires 2 AAA batteries. You should<br />
have a red LED when powered on.<br />
� The Intellipen will power off after 5 minutes of inactivity to conserve batteries.<br />
� Confirm the USB cable is plugged into both the computer and Intellipen USB<br />
ports. Suggest switching USB ports on the computer as a possible solution.<br />
Advance Windows trouble shooting, requires technical proficiency.<br />
� Confirm that the computer has discovered the device and installed the<br />
appropriate drivers to access device. Run the device manager: from the<br />
Windows Start Menu, select Run, type: devmgmt.msc, select / click OK. You<br />
should see a USB Mass Storage Device.<br />

� Confirm that the windows disk management has assigned a drive letter to the Intellipen USB flash drive. To run the disk<br />
manager: from the Windows Start Menu, select Run, type: diskmgmt.msc, select / click OK. Your Intellipen USB flash drive<br />
should be assigned a “Drive letter”. In some cases windows fails to assign a drive letter. When this happens you can manually<br />
assign a drive letter for use by the Windows Operating system.<br />
My Intellipen plays the <strong>Replogle</strong> greeting and then immediately powers off after playing two tones. This error is indication<br />
that the globeapp.bin file on the Intelliglobe device is either: corrupt, damaged, incorrectly named and/or missing,<br />
� Confirm that batteries are new and provide sufficient power. Low batteries may not power Intellipen USB Flash drive device.<br />
� Download the latest update for the Intellipen and apply / replace the globeapp.bin on the Intellipen USB Flash drive device.<br />
� Confirm that there is only 1 file correctly named globeapp.bin on the ROOT of the Intellipen USB Flash drive device.<br />
� The Intellipen flash drive is incorrectly formatted. The correct file format should be FAT32 as required by Intellipen firmware.<br />
